Improving in MKW Time Trials can be exhausting for many as they donβt see consistent improvement or progress while playing β
As a high level TTer with one of the fastest improvement rates, here is the best advice I can give that I wish I knew when I was climbing the ranks:
Ghost: 1:08.999 / Pace: 4th WW / Luigi Circuit / Lap 3 / 1 Bounce cut left to end it all. This is the maddest I've ever gotten at this game, but we continue. Almost 3 months in the making, 1:08 awaits...
Almost 5 years after my first regional top 10 on GV glitch, I've accomplished my first Worldwide top 10 with a tied 1:09.094 with Logan on LC. Much more to come on this track as demonstrated by the pace
Racing current BKS, probably not RTA viable (at WR level) due to the first MT being precise to save over a full chain. Despite that, it can be used to cancel a chain which may provide interest to those who seek a different way to do the ending (comparable to MH drift storage)
Starting 2024 off strong with 2 big PBs for me along with my rSL WR grind going well and my motivation is high. I always stream all my WR attempts live on my twitch so feel free to stop by and say hi:
Someone hijacked the train and stopped off at a cafe named '1:42.059', we're back on the tracks now and should be scheduled for a 1:41 within a few hours
9. You aren't failing enough
This is something I've never seen anyone talk about.
Take TF shroomless:
If in 10 attempts you made 8 wide cuts and 2 fast cuts, then on average you're not going tight enough -> majority slow and wide cuts.
Fail more to what you're not failing to!
Someone needs to study the rate of which age correlates with No Glitch skill + interest. So many players including myself started off with glitches when we were very young and are now primarily NG players. This has always intrigued me, share your thoughts below π§
7. Top TTers aren't special
High level TTers have a controller and a screen, just like you.
However they're more effective at utilizing that controller compared to you due to the hours they've put into the game + the intuition they've obtained throughout.
Talent isn't needed.
CTGP idea: A feature that displays how many downloads a ghost has that can also serve as a leaderboard filter as βMost Downloadedβ. A cool QOL concept that might assist players in downloading a βreliableβ ghost to race against in TTs
10. Have fun!
At the end of the day, MKW is a videogame. SO ENJOY YOURSELFβΌοΈ
By maintaining a positive mindset and not being in a state where you aren't enjoying the game, you'll be more inclined to play and improve.
This WILL yield the best results.
You got this! π«Ά
4. Race ghosts
Racing ghosts in TTs acts as training wheels and gives information on where you're losing time.
Racing a pace ghost is an option for more advanced players (tutorial on YT soon as well).
Overtime, your driving will become more refined as shown in this example:
2. Studying input viewers
Input viewers are the bread and butter for all the strats, movements, and tech in this video game.
Through study of high level runs, you can use the input viewer to your advantage and learn strategies like I do here with Sosis' rSL WR shroom inputs:
3. Practicing using savestates
Savestates are super efficient to drill muscle memory for a strategy you're trying to learn or master.
MKW-SP is preferred over Dolphin (hardware > emulator) + installation tutorial soon
Examples of me using savestates to practice detach on WGM:
Gonna have to lock in with school as it's my last year of high school and I want to give it my best. Yes this means less frequent MKW however I'll still be playing fairly actively, just secondary to my primary focus of academics ππ
6. Don't compare yourself to others
Comparing yourself to others creates an unhealthy environment where you're not playing for fun + isn't necessary to determine your own skill.
TTing is a solo journey. Call with friends and share times but remember, your journey is your own.
