As a brief aside, I should mention that elections in 1870s Missouri did not operate like elections currently do. There was no secret ballot in 1870s Missouri. Voters primarily voted by "ticket" which were slips of paper handed out by parties or printed by newspapers... (7/16)

US Census estimates found that Missouri's population grew 23,037 between April 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022 (a 0.37% increase). That growth was not evenly distributed throughout the state, with some counties growing by as much as 6% and others shrinking by 7% in that timeframe:

There has been a lot of debate among Missouri Republicans about whether or not H.B.2117 is a "6-2" or a "5-3" map. Trump carried six seats in 2020. However, if electoral trends from the previous decade continue, the proposed 2nd district (which starts off at Trump+5) could flip.

On August 22, 1876, St. Louis voters went to the polls. Initial returns showed the scheme of separation failing by 1,416 votes (5.27%). Advocates of the separation scheme immediately denounced the results as fraudulent and soon the fate of the count was in the courts. (6/16)

In 1820, Missouri cast three electoral votes for James Monroe for President. Keen observers will notice that this occurred before Missouri's official date of statehood (August 10, 1821) - so what happened here? ๐ŸงตThread on the time Missouri cast Schrรถdinger's electoral votes:

ahead of the election. Tickets were often printed in a way to make it easy for outside observers to see how a voter voted - which facilitated the rise of political machines, like that of Edward Butler in the 5th Ward of St. Louis City (remember that name later). (8/16)

On January 31, 1865, the U.S. House passed S.J. RES. 16., which referred the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery) to the states for ratification. Seven of Missouri's nine congressmen voted in favor. One week later, Missouri would become the 8th state to ratify the 13th amendment:

There were franchise restrictions that prevented large portions of the population from voting. Finally, while there were procedures in place to try to guarantee the accurate counting of ballots, those were not as developed as they are today, and were frequently ignored. (9/16)

Bush tended to win majority African American areas, while Bell tended to do quite well in the White areas of MO-1, with a few exceptions. This is quite striking, considering that in 2018 and 2020 Bush did better in the White areas of MO-1 compared to the district as a whole.

Some of this fraud was reported to have been done at the behest of political machine bosses who wanted the separation scheme defeated. One election judge said he falsified returns at the request of Edward Butler (though no charges were ever brought against Butler). (11/16)
