A reminder that Akihiro Miwa (born in 1935) is one of the most prominent queer icon in Japanese history who survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki (his hometown) during WW2.

The OP had a shocking revelation that the digital brush they found useful that they've been using for all this time is actually a face of a person that can only be seen when the brush is made huge 🤣
Apparently, the OP's younger sister took her cat (pictured) to the vet because she was worried about her cat never fully opening its eyes and the vet told her the cat was healthy and it was not opening its eyes wide because it "has no motivation" ASDKSAJSHS
If a random cat guided me through some abandoned shrine gates, I would expect myself to be transported into a different universe shortly after going through them
This OP (a professional plushie designer) created an incredible penguin plushie with zippers that can turn from egg to baby penguin to adult penguin!!! 🐧
Last night, Megumi Ogata (VA for Shinji/Evangelion, etc) won Best Voice Actress at the 16th Seiyu Award
In the speech, Ogata said, "Are you sure I should be getting Best Voice Actress? 70% of the roles I've done are boys and I don't really consider myself an actress." (1/x)
According to this OP, their cat has learnt that it only gets food when the clock strikes 9 and thus has been trying to commit the "forbidden act of attempting to warp the time (to go faster), which the humankind has failed to actualize" 😂
If you ever wanted to become a giant freshwater stingray, you can do that now with a life-size giant freshwater stingray blanket from Felissimo that you can also wrap around you and pretend to be one
The ridiculousness of entity formerly known as Twitter Japan now just using just "Japan" for its name because they cannot legally change the name to "X Japan" since "X Japan" is trademarked by the prominent Japanese rock band of the same name.
Rina Sawayama performed at Summer Sonic music festival earlier today and spoke about LGBTQIA+ rights:
"I'm proud to be bisexual. But same-sex marriage is banned in Japan. Japan is the only G7 nation that does not have such protection [of rights]." (Continued ↓)
リナ・サワヤマ「私はバイセクシュアルで誇りに思っています。でも日本では同性婚が禁止されている。G7の中で唯一そのプロテクションがない国。I’m proud to be a Japaneseだけど、これは恥ずかしいこと。LGBTの人は人間。LGBTの人は日本人。一緒に戦ってください」 #サマーソニック
#SummerSonic
It's not just that this manga gets it.
The author of "She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat" (
@thakaome_uzzaki
) has CONSISTENYLY stood up for LGBTQ+ rights in Japan publicly (which many authors avoid for the fear of social repurcussions from the cis heteronormative majority).
⚠️ Important Tip⚠️
For those who are living in Japan (esp. women or femmes), if any guy asks you to call his phone using your phone, you can put 184 before calling his number.
Adding 184 in Japan will make your call appear as "unknown caller," allowing your # to be not recorded
This OP says that his mom got a scam call from a man pretending to be him.
The scammer said that "he" got into an affair & "his wife" is demanding alimony so "he" wants her to lend him cash.
His mom answered, "MY SON! ISN'T THAT POPULAR WITH WOMEN!!" & slammed the phone down 💀
So this happened earlier this afternoon in Japan. Japan is the only county in G7 nations to NOT have marriage equality legalized.
I don't have the emotional energy to get into the details right now b/c I had to see transphobic keyword trending
#1
in JP Twittersphere tonight.
It's a great day for LGBTQ+ people in Japan today, now that Nagoya District Court ruled the ban on marriage equality in Japan unconstitutional 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
If you are an artist and you need reference for how the air moves during the combat scene, it may help if you take some pictures like how this OP did while putting a long piece of cling wrap around hands/feet to see the dynamic movements
CW: Suicide
Hi, a Japanese celebrity (who has been visibly presenting as femme recently) has died by suicide.
While they didn't publicly come out as trans, they've spoken about their queerness and identity frequently and gave hope to many gender-variant people.
A new manga series called "Hanbun Kyodai" ("Half Siblings") by Fujimi Yoiko started on To-ti Web.
This comic depicts the story of a mixed-race Black Japanese siblings as they navigate through the racist Japanese society.
🐱 CAT LOVERS!!!!!! 🐈
There's a new Japanese website called Uchinoko Maker which is basically picrew for cats (with over 200 million possible design combinations)!!!
It's free and you can use it to recreate your cats or create your dream cat! :3

I'm taking a day off from work today as it is my monthly thing to treat myself on the first day of the month.
I'm visiting Siam right now and what do I see first thing at the station?
INCLUSIVE PRIDE FLAGS FLYING WITH A BIG GUNDAM STATUE, THAT'S WHAT!!! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
i just found out about Hanamaruobake, a new Sanrio character who is a ghost that gives you a hanamaru* to people who do their best and i already love this precious baby.
(explanation of hanamaru below!)
BANDAI is releasing まちぼうけUMA2 ("Cryptid waiting for someone to come around
#2
") which features a some famous cryptids around the world including this sad Mothman sitting on the ground 😭
~ Potentially useful JP fact ~
Depending on the context, the use of "[Name] てめぇ!!!" carries the meaning of "[Name], YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!"
The OP's yelling is an appropriate example of such nuance as what the OP yells can be interpreted as, "EL0N, YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!"
When he became 17, he started wokring in gay bars and night clubs. It was there when he signed a exclusive contract to become a chanson singer at the club 銀巴里 ("Silver Paris") & he was marketed as a singer whose nationality, age, and gender was "unknown" (国籍・年齢・性別不詳)
I'm sure a lot of artists worldwide knows about Posemaniacs, but sharing in case you've never heard of it!
Posemaniacs is a royalty free pose reference that you can use on your web browser that is available in multiple languages (including English)!
Continued:
"There is so much talk about being "genderless" nowadays and there are voice actors in the industry who have come out [as queer]. And like myself, there are people out there who go on about their daily lives mostly not thinking of themselves as women." (2/x)
He first reached stardom in 1957 when he sang the Japanese cover of the French song "Méqué méqué".
His trans feminine beauty drove people wild. Mass media called him the "Sister Boy" (シスターボーイ). Writer Yukio Mishima called Miwa, "The Beauty of Heavens" (「天上界の美」).
Miwa is now 87 years old and still thriving!!! Miwa continues to have unmatched presence in Japanese entertainment world.
One of his most recent media appearance was portraying a godly fox entity in Donbei commercial:
~ JP Pun Explainer ~
鳩ハット (hato hatto)
This capsule toy series titled 鳩ハット has a bunch of pigeons in fasionable hats because:
鳩 (hato) = "pigeon"
ハット (hatto) = "hat"
Anyway, I'm glad we have queer elder icons like Miwa who fiercely created a space in JP entertainment and media.
PS. Please enjoy these fabulous pictures of young Miwa:
We still got more to go until marriage equality is realized in Japan, but I'm happy to see that a company as big as Nintendo making a very public announcement about how it has introduced employee benefits for same-sex couples within the company.
Cont'd:
"I don't care about "male" or "female," and for the next award show, maybe you can just make it 2 awards without the labels. I think that could lead to more possibilities." (4/x)
Cont'd:
"Compared to actors who must show their faces on media, I think it's the voice actors who can advocate to go beyond the genders and put aside labels of 'male actors' and 'actresses.'" (3/x)
Wow, I just found about this Japanese Buddhist temple in Saitama named Saimyouji that was built in 1262 CE that is aiming to be a LGBTQ+ friendly temple 🥰💗
Love to see such a long-standing place of worship doing their best to accommodate queer people in Japan! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Cont'd:
"In the JP anime industry, actresses of my age don't get to play the protagonists. To be in such an industry, I thought that my award acceptance can be a positive influence, so I've decided to accept it. I'm sorry for sounding arrogant. I truly am happy for this." (6/6)
Congratulations to lovers of muscular pectorals for, uh, these mini plushies called 筋肉ッション (kinniku-sshon), a portmanteau of 筋肉 (kinniku, "mucles") and クッション (kusshon, "cushion")
Miwa's career continued into acting, where he played the infamous villainess Black Lizard in "Black Lizard" (黒蜥蜴) on stage and on film.
His success in entertainment industry continued with appearances and roles in TV, more films, and animations (like Princess Mononoke).
I came to know Medjed because Medjed has garnered popularity in Japan since around early 2010s and has starred in 2 anime series (神々の記 & とーとつにエジプト神) both featuring various Egyptian gods ( ᐛ )
A clip from とーとつにエジプト神:
Admittedly, I wasn't thinking a lot about gender back then (because I was a child), but retrospectively speaking, I think presence of such queer elders and trans feminine icons in Japanese media had been encouraging for me (who turned out to be a nonbinary JP person)
CAT LOVERS MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Feb 22 is national cat day in Japan b/c 2 = "ni" in JP = associated w/"nyan" = 2/22 = Nyan Nyan Nyan Day
This year is 2022 which means 22/2/22 = Nyan Nyan Nyan Nyan Nyan Day & it's the Year of Tiger 🐯
Get your cat pics/art ready for epic cat day!
At 38th minute of AKIRA, there is a little sign with JP words written in alphabet which translates to:
WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE TO DRAW THIS PART, GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK, UGH
Looks like the animators were having a rough time doing AKIRA 😭
Love to see that Saimyouji (Japanese Buddhist temple in Saitama that was built in 1262 CE, over 760 years ago) celebrated International Nonbinary People's Day 🥰
💛🤍💜🖤
Saimyouji aims to be an LGBTQ+ inclusive temple and I think that's great 💗
By the time I was a 7 (when Princess Mononoke came out in Japan), he was already 62 years old. I knew him not only because of Princess Mononoke because he was on popular TV shows often around late 1990s to 2000s.
just letting you know there used to be a second-hand computer & computer parts shop called Michaelsoft Binbows in Maehashi, Gunma which unfortunately closed in 2001
いらすとや (Irasutoya), the renowned copyright-free cpi-art website got updated today with a new illustration titled "クビになった青い鳥のイラスト" ("The illustration of a blue bird that got fired") 💀
"I'm proud to be a Japanese [person] but, this fact is an embarrassment. LGBT people are people. LGBT people are Japanese. Please fight along with us."
(Note: Her speech is not recorded in the above video footage.)
This OP is a 70 y/o grandma from Japan. She writes that she gave up crafting b/c of her illness which gave her shaky hands 😢
But recently, she started making Gundam models (influences by her grandchild). She says she was reminded of how fun it is to make things. (1/2)
This is just an additional trivia about Megumi Ogata, but Ogata played Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus in the original Japanese Sailor Moon TV series (1993 - 1997) in addition to playing major young male characters in JP anime.
Something happened last week right at the end of Pride Month that was so fucked up in JP politics in regards to LGBTQIA+ rights, and it took me the weekend to process because it made me so fucking upset to write words.
But I'm ready to go fucking ballistic right now 🧵
PSS.
I was reading through my thread & realized it should be noted that Miwa has come out as a gay person in late 1950s (!!!)
He was met by backlash & decrease in popoularity back then.
But he regained his popularity in 1960s by holding a recital featuring only his original songs, which was the first of its kind to ever happen in Japan.
The rest is history. He has become one of the highly revered performers in Japanese entertainment industry.
虎 ("tora" = tiger(s)) are sometimes used as mascots by JP trans people because "transgender" in JP is トランスジェンダー ("toransujendah").
One such example of JP trans mascot usage of tiger:
Kinky Transgender Meeting in Kinki Region (around Osaka).
One person of a queer couple* in Japan adopting the other partner as their "child" happens quite often and many choose to do so because the Japanese government has yet to legalize marriage equality or else they won't have legal recognition of their partners as a family member.

BAM!
CW: sexual harrassment and misgendering of trans woman
A trans female employee of PIXIV held a press conference today about her decision to sue her cis male boss also working at PIXIV for sexual harrassment.
Note:
The Japanese Wiki page for Miwa has more details of his life. ()
Also, he has written multiple books including his autobiography 紫の履歴書 ("The Purple Résumé") in Japanese if you'd like to get more insight into his life.
Tip:
If you find an unknown AirTag in your belonging (potential stalking), take off the back panel of the AirTag, take the battery out, and there will be a finely printed serial number.
Serial number can reveal who the Tag belongs to. Take it to Apple & the police, if necessary
As a younger generation of Japanese trans person, I am delighted to see these pictures of trans elders who came before me 💗
Gender-affirming care is available in modern Japan, but it comes with great hurdles, and there's MUCH to be done to progress our rights in my nation.
Japan had a short-lived heyday of transgender self-determination in the midcentury. Multiple clinics offered gender-affirming surgeries from ~1950-1965 before the nation banned them. Trans people hung out on the streets of Tokyo like in these Katsumi Watanabe photos I colorized:
AMERICAN PEOPLE!!!!!
YOUR AMBASSADOR TO MY COUNTRY (JAPAN) IS WORKING WITH A JAPANESE ZIONIST CULT TO PUSH PROISRAELI PROPAGANDA AND MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A WHOLE LOT OF JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE PRO-ISRAEL (WHICH WE ARE NOT).
Appreciate the show of solidarity with the Israeli people during this difficult time. The Japanese people know better than anyone the anguish of seeing loved ones abducted. It is morally wrong to take civilian hostages. We pray for the safe return of all the hostages from Gaza
And the reason why Ainu culture and language are threatened to become extinct is because (like many colonizers) the Yamato Japanese (hegemonic ethnicity of Japan) annexed the lands of Ainu people, denied their rights to speak their language, and effectively tried to wipe them out
Ainu culture is so stunning and distinctive. Their language has no known relatives but is sadly on the brink of extinction, so I hope more attention and resources can be given to them to help preserve their traditions
It's always hilarious for me to see non-Japanese people deny the existence of trans and nonbinary people in Japan since I'm a queer nonbinary person born and raised in Japan and I know that there are thousands of trans people in Japan (statistically speaking).
Indonesian art have this dark fantasy looks its so awesome. Imagine a video game ala Elden Ring with this visual.

~ potentially useful JP fact ~
The 🙄 in Japanese is often used to mean "thinking about something so much your eyes are rolling up" and not as the "rolling eyes" nuance of English-speaking countries.
Afaik the rolling eyes is not as common an expression in Japan. (1/x)
It's so astonishing to think that Japan in the 80s had so much money (because of the asset price bubble) that we could afford Janet Jackson to be in mobile phone commercials acting out a career woman and a housewife dusting futon on a sunny day.
Peaceful news of the day:
This OP found a chicken in a store bathroom trash can (?) and the store has a sign explaining that the chicken likes it in there (and lays eggs in there) and asks customers to look over them quietly when the chicken's in there (???)
I am beyond tired of the JP government being homophobic little shit without a shred of shame and seeing a bombardment of transphobia coming from a mass of people who don't care about human rights of trans people. I am just feeling worn out at the moment.
Additional fact:
Other than Moro (from Princess Mononoke) and Witch of the Waste (from Howl's Moving Castle), Miwa played the role of Arceus in the original Japanese version of "Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life" (2009)
(Cast list in English: )
with the chaotic mess of various media, i was thinking to myself, "perhaps it is time we go back to simpler times of individual sites like geocities but geocities no longer exist..." then i litearlly found about neocities right now:
just wanted to let you know that Boys Run the Riot by Gaku Keito, a trans male manga artist, is planned for English release this summer and it is translated by
@leotranslations
who is also a trans man!
make sure to check with your bookstores to read and show support!!! :3
I can now announce that I am the translator for Boys Run the Riot by Gaku Keito, an awesome manga about a trans boy and fashion! I've been pinching myself every day since I got this dream project. I hope you enjoy my translation as much as I'm enjoying writing it! 🏳️⚧️
Meanwhile, in Japan...
The sentence 「ニャオハ立つな」 ("DON'T STAND UP, SPRIGATITO") has been nominated for the Most Trendy Social Media Buzzword Award 2022, signifying how many people just do not want Sprigatito to stand up in Japan 💀
Good reference for any author who needs to do a book-signing event but definitely DO NOT want to be seen/perceived by anyone.
Pictured:
Japanese manga artist Yoroida attending their manga-signing event in a full suit of armor.
Later on in the thread, the person whose face was made into a brush appeared in the comment section and the person just so happened to be Krenz, a popular illustrator and art teacher in Taiwan 🤣
