My new article has just been published as open access in Sociology Compass. I argue that sexuality must be understood as a key pillar of the global order of neoliberalism within the context of empire, colonialism, and racial capitalism.

After a 7-month wait, a journal decided to reject my paper based on four reviews: two recommending “accept with minor revisions,” one R&R, and one reject. I’m fine with rejections, which are part of “playing the game.” What stings me is the unfiltered hate disguised as a review.

Just had Prof. Stephen Suh at SDSU virtually visiting my Global Inequalities class. We read his 2020 @ERSjournal piece on the return migration of Korean Americans to S. Korea and how racialization processes in the US promote Asian American immigration to the imagined homeland.

In this paper, I try to critically rethink the Euro-American centrism in the concept of queer liberalism. I argue that we take seriously the quiet and silent nature of queer politics in non-Western contexts, unfolding in unexpected places like global corporations.

Earlier this year, I served as an expert witness in a gender-based asylum application from South Korea to Canada. I testified before the hearing officer after submitting a substantial report on the Korean legal system’s chronic failure to protect survivals of intimate violence.

As we wrapped up the first five weeks of Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies, which were focusing on feminist theoretical approaches, we did a tournament style survey on “my favorite feminist thinker.” My students love intersectional, decolonial, and transnational works!

Let’s not erase the histories of feminist and activist scholarship that came before us. Read, cite, and respect work rooted in communities, struggles, and activism. And maybe avoid capitalizing on or monopolizing credit for studying marginalized communities and their struggles.

For the first time, a No Pride Party will be held in Seoul on the same day as Seoul Pride on July 1. The party is organized by activists and members of communities that are often marginalized within the queer community. See their manifesto in English:

My global comparative ethnographic research on LGBT rights politics in Asia wouldn’t have been possible without the support of @SSRC_IDRF . So grateful for my SSRC mentor @kimberlykhoang as well!

@snsiegel76 @yangchienhao Thanks for sharing this! I’m aware of this work and am glad to see a variety of empirical works making a similar argument coming out of different disciplines around the same time, showing the scholarly validity and political timeliness of the argument!

Extremely proud of my Intro to Women’s and Gender Studies students and their final creative projects! A lot of them worked on infographics on gendered workplace, commercialization of intimacy, global migrant domestic work, gendered settler colonialism, and many other topics.

Drawing from Ann Mische’s theory of imagined futures, I argue that Taiwan’s marriage equality movement reconstructed the very meaning of “equality” in relation to Taiwan’s aspirational status in the global sphere in the context of China’s rise.

The organizers include disabled queers, gender non-conforming folks, undocumented migrants/refugees, drug users, and sex workers. They are protesting the increasingly corporatized and sanitized nature of pride events, which erases their very existence within the queer community.

They must have been inspired by the story of queer politicians in Taiwan. I just told the story as a cultural translator. I'm constantly reminded that the significance of my research is determined by how the people whose stories I'm drawing on understand and make use of it.
