My Great Uncle jumped into Arnhem with 10 Para 75 years ago today. I don’t know how many of his brother officers whose signatures are on this cigarette case died. But the battalion was disbanded after Op Market Garden because it’s losses were so huge.

I see the ‘22 vets a day’ stuff is going round again. No basis for 22 figure. Service people have lower rates of mental illness than age/sex matched civilian population. We need a culture where those struggling can talk about it, but not perpetuating the damaged vet cliche.

1. On my @RoyalNavy uniform I wear a ‘Commando’ dagger signifying that I have successfully completed @RoyalMarine commando training. The dagger is more accurately called a ‘Fairburn-Sykes’ fighting knife, but most people don’t know the story behind Fairburn and Skyes. THREAD

My great uncle Lt Brian Carr 10 PARA. 1918-2004. Served in Africa, Italy and N Europe. Dropped with Op Market Garden into Arnhem. Captured twice, escaped twice, helped by very brave Dutch Resistance. ✌️🇳🇱 Far more distinguished looking than any paras I know today!

Later, in a quiet part of the forest the Troop gather to receive their green berets. It’s a huge privilege to welcome new Commandos to the club. Standing there, sweat soaked, with numb feet & shaking legs, they suddenly grasp that they’ve achieved their goal, they are Commandos.

Visited NCHQ today. Was awesome to look over the water to see @HMSQnlz alongside with two of her T45 escorts and the #brandspankers HMS Forth. BigLiz had a couple of CH-47s on board which had flown off by the time I’d liberated my phone from NCHQ phone prison!

Love this. Judgement and a perfectly applied threat of force. The TPD Officer didn’t shoot him when he realised the suspect wasn’t armed...but pulled his baton and the threat of a baton to the face dropped the suspect to his knees. Outstanding policing.

@coffeeshopjihad @paleofuture CS ‘gas’ is classed as an irritant, it is absolutely not a nerve agent. And regarded as non-lethal. Nerve agents like VX and Sarin block acetylcholinesterases. Totally different class and amongst the most lethal substances known to science.

#OnThisDay 2018 Surgeon Capt. Rick Jolly RN died aged 71. Rick was the only servicemen to be decorated by the British & Argentine Governments for his medical care of soldiers from both sides. He campaigned for recognition of PTSD and co-founded South Atlantic Medal Assoc.

Today is the 40th Anniversary of 'Warrenpoint'-a sophisticated #IED ambush by the #PIRA against the British military. 18 British Soldiers were were killed, 1 uninvolved Irish citizen was mistakenly shot and killed in the aftermath. Named after a nearby castle Graphic images.
