Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad. My idea behind Tumbbad was to use the horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism.
Kantara is a celebration of these.
I started working on an existential risk script with a focus on pandemics in 2015. After five years of intensive research and scripting, sharing our first concept art as we begin the casting process.

No, fellow human. Raised by these wonderful women in profound love and self assurance. Raised on the non-violence of Jaina thought, intellectual rigour of Vedic and Vedantic wisdom, compassionate synthesis of the Buddha, critical thinking of Kabir... What happened to you, human?
My dear friend. You made the future comprehensible and the past malleable. My self expanded with you. I felt understood by you. I wish I had said this to you more often. I needed you.

Nothing wrong with masculinity. When violence, predation, and bullying are privileged as the celebratory aspects of masculinity or for that matter humanity, that cognisance is necessary.

The potential cost of conflict far outweighs the potential cost of positive engagements. Evolutionarily speaking, if bio smoke alarms (pain, anxiety, fear) can save our lives even one in the ten times they go off, the cost of the other nine false alarms is worth bearing.

You may be compassionate and charitable, but end up working for an institution that writes off the death of thousands as collateral damage. So be empathetic, but even more importantly, work towards building empathetic systems.

Kunal critiques and corrects our political and cultural discourse, because that’s immensely essential for the wellbeing of a society, and just as importantly Kunal is devoted to incessant self correction - he is as introspective as he is outspoken. Tune in for our conversation.
This is one of the best content piece we've produced, we took two months to create this & hence we've full faith that no one will watch it...

When you work, you pay with a piece of your life. Know the opportunity cost of your time. Don’t pitch it too high though, else you’ll never afford to employ yourself.
The Ever-Changing Past
I grew up in Mumbai in the 80s. I always wished I had a better record of my childhood. Now with AI, I can photograph my interiority - dreams, aspirations, and anxieties. All my memories have suddenly come to life - even the ones I never lived.

Many young people, inspired by my path, consider skipping college for a self-curated education. I don't advocate dropping out. My college simply didn't meet my intellectual needs. Online education was just emerging. I had to put in a lot of legwork in creating my learning journey

Ethics are the blueprint for the future we seek to build. Once we can envision the kind of world we want to live in, we can reverse engineer the values that will take us there - that is our ethical framework.
Here's a conversation I recorded between Irrfan and entrepreneurs about death, spirituality, and responsibility. This is my tribute to the great actor as I remember him - a vast, compassionate, rational, and graceful seeker of truth. Premieres 10 AM at
What if we were as concerned with what we put into our minds as we are becoming with what we put into our bodies? What if there was inalienable evidence that culture is as important as food - would we scorn at junk culture?
In 1995, astronomer Bob Williams decided to point the Hubble Space Telescope at a patch of the sky filled with absolutely nothing significant. The telescope stared into nothingness for about a 100 hours - at a huge economic and personal risk...
Great artists are sieves through which the zeitgeist sifts it’s dreams, hopes, joys and anxieties. Irrfan Khan was one of the greatest artists I had the privilege to know. He has imprinted upon each one of us parts of his self that we shall carry and pass on.

What makes you think I don’t love my culture? Let me say it unambiguously. I have incessant admiration for my culture and for the place I come from. What’s making you so angry? I truly don’t understand.
Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up does exactly what caricature, farce, satire, slapstick are meant to do - scream a warning when all subtlety has failed; punch up at those who amplify favourable opinion at the cost of uncomfortable fact.

If free will is an illusion, then consciousness is also an illusion. So are stock markets, altruism and traffic. The ancients didn’t have agent based modelling tools like we do, so they labelled emergent phenomena as “Maya”.

The guiding principle of gambling mechanics is to make a one in a million probability look like a 50 percent chance and make a completely randomised chance based event look like an outcome of dexterity, timing, personality and “destiny”.
Your right to swing your arm leaves off where someone else’s right not to have their nose struck begins.
Most negotiations of life are around real or alleged borders between arms and noses.
That’s why you need science. To determine with certainty.
Not all our art and inventions are going to change the world, for better or for worse. Most of them will become digital noise or evaporate from memory.
Had recorded conversations with Irrfan and friends for an essay film I was making. He had such profound insights. He spoke with a sense of wonder and reason. He thought, he examined, he created. And with his work, he has transcended.
The big questions of the self and the universe don’t need the speculative romance of philosophy. Science has these answers now. The purpose of philosophy is to simulate potential human futures and propose social and moral contracts that will get us there.
“What was your strategy during the aandolan?” A peer had asked him. “We sat by the river,” he had said, smiling, “and sang.”
Had the privilege of sitting by a river and absorb his insights two decades ago.
We are in a constant state of dialogue
with the environment, but for a dialogue to work, both parties need to understand each other’s languages. Our sciences have come a long way in learning the cadence of the atom and the alphabets of the genome.
How well do you speak Planet?
A story is a record of data points and their correlations. A story is also an engine to simulate possible futures. The ability to tell stories took brute force out of natural selection.
“We have created a Star Wars civilization, with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions, and godlike technology.” E. O. Wilson.
The genetic software that evolved in the scarcity of Stone Age continues to inform our behaviour in the abundance of Network Age.
Pain is a smoke alarm with sprinklers that saves a house from catching fire at the earliest signs of a fire. Sometimes it is misinformed and ends up damaging the house. Autoimmune, allergies, depression, anxiety are often caused by misinformed smoke alarms in our bodies.
Simulation systems (mathematical models, philosophical thought experiments) that don’t have real world applications are like SPACs - shells with all the paperwork in place till something operational is ready to merge into them.
Can knowledge be passed on without taxonomy - assigning, naming and organising observed phenomena? Much has been speculated about the limitations of language in metaphysics. What’s the limit of wordless, code-less, map-less comprehension?
I declared that I would make a seismograph for my school science fair. I was 12. There were three sources of this confidence - some success with making a more basic suspended soda bottle variety version, possessing a second-hand DIY book...
The money metaphor has been distended, stretched, mutated and hacked by its high priests for short term resource gains leading to long term bugs in the simulation, further amplifying the disparity between haves and have-nots in humans.
What can AI not do? Much comes to mind, but this is the most significant: AI cannot prescribe the future of humanity. The storyteller’s job is more urgent than ever: to help get our priorities in order.

Risk is a responsibility. There's a fine balance somewhere between risk and comfort, between cognisance and application, between rigour and acceptance, between justice and empathy.

Entertainment is a consequence of supernormal stimuli that trigger amplified responses. Stories are naturally selected pedagogy. We are designed to respond to stories of conflict and courtship as these have the highest sustenance consequences.

An absolutely enlightening talk. I loved the film and that conversation including why it was set in the era of the Spanish flu had wonderful leaps of insight. Made my morning.
That said, if you find yourself in a college with outdated syllabi, poor infrastructure, unchallenging intellect, lack of good teachers, or brilliant peers, don't hesitate to seek out rigorous alternatives. Access to knowledge is a fundamental right.
Mammootty's performance in Kaathal is a historic milestone, a defining act of this decade. His expansive rendition of the character distills the struggles and beauty of an entire era. What a privilege to see one of the greatest living artists of cinema at work.

I regret not making the film in time. I think I should have at least published it as a book. Some day, I will make the time to put my screenplay into prose form, I hope. In the meantime, sharing some images I generated using Al for the story.

The two paths aren't mutually exclusive. You can pursue a PhD along with multi-disciplinary learning. With AI doing much of our legwork, it's critical to seek education that fosters critical thinking, discernment, empathy, imagination, and a systems view of complexity.
I see critics and peers complain about the smugness of the clown who laughs at the emperor’s (lack of) clothes. Well, peer reviewed papers aren’t smug. This is an arrow that points us in that direction - with a pop song that goes, “Listen to the goddamn qualified scientists!”
