"What if the State said it was going to execute homeless people? ... Would we have an Eighth Amendment problem?" Yes.
"That would be both cruel and unusual, right?" Yes.
Congrats to the law students starting summer jobs! Here's my advice for being a Summer Associate:
๐ Take notes. Whenever you're asked to join a meeting or go to someone's office, take a pen and paper. This was one of my first lessons interning in a law office during college.
The man next to me on my flight home is headed home from a trip with his family celebrating his 80th birthday.
He opened his iPad to read & stopped to stare at his home screen for a few secondsโa picture of his 3 daughters, 2 of whom are with himโsaying โThere they are.โ ๐ฅน
4:00-5:00 - Confirm deadlines are met
5:00-6:00 - Return phone calls
6:00-8:00 - Attempt to be normal
8:00-10:00 - Prime Productivity
10:00-12:00 - Additional, low-energy tasks
12:00-7:00 - Attempt sleep while reviewing case theories
7:00-9:00 - Wake up
Repeat.

So about that big news...
It's been a long, winding road, but I'm so excited to share that I have been elevated to Partner. I'm grateful to my mentors who helped me get here, clients who trusted me with their matters, and my QB colleagues for their confidence in me.
Weโre proud to announce our 2024 class of partners, a group of outstanding attorneys who will contribute to our long-term success through their commitment to excellent client service and focus on strengthening our collegial, collaborative culture.
One year of no alcohol ๐๐ผ
I didnโt drink that much before but tbh I donโt miss it. I donโt feel like Iโve missed out. I like not having to think about whoโs driving.
I hope our generation can change the instinct of thinking someone has a โproblemโ if they donโt drink.
Tonight, I received the Hillsborough County award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Young Lawyer. ๐
This award means so much to me; itโs difficult to put in words. ๐งต
Idk who needs to hear this, but let's stop glamorizing work travel.
Those of us who get to do it are fortunate to see other parts of the country, but it is not easy.
Itโs Summer Associate season on Monday. ๐ด
Attorneys - the pressure is on you, too. Itโs up to us to support them, mentor them, and give them experience.

๐ฝ๏ธ Take the invite. Whether it's to lunch, a networking event, or to watch a hearing. Get as much experience as you can. Get to know people in the office and beyond. Take in all of the advice.
๐ญ Ask questions. You're not expected to know everything.
Assigning work to a junior associate:
โ Give cryptic assignment with little to no instructions and then disappear.
โ Provide context and background with an explanation of the deliverable and stick around for questions.
Missouri executed Marcellus Williams tonight. The system failed him at every turn.
In 2017, the former Gov stayed his execution for a board to review his conviction. The next and current Gov then stopped the effort and proceeded to set Williamsโ execution.
Attorney Melanie Kalmanson believes all attorneys have an obligation to help those in need through

service. She witnessed the difference this work can make in addressing the justice gap while serving as a Florida Supreme Court clerk and carries that with her today.
I've billed an average of 9.14 hours yesterday and today. I have a headache that could kill. I have no idea how I did this for a year straight. (PS. It was not by choice. I was very burnt out afterwards and do not recommend.)
My Mom is taking

exam today. She texted me early this AM to say she's turning off her cellphone and disconnecting the house phone. My step-dad is monitoring the front door to ensure no interruptions.
The circumstances are weird, but you all can do this!
Clerking is more than just a job. It is an investment in your career and an opportunity to gain a lifelong mentor and role model.
Iโm so grateful for my time clerking for Justice Pariente, one of my most treasured mentors. Lunch together today was like no time had passed. ๐ค

Last night closed out my first semester teaching at
@FSUCollegeofLaw
. What an incredible experience discussing capital punishment with law students for 13 weeks! โ๏ธ
Teaching has been a dream of mine, and Iโm grateful for everyoneโs support.
And Iโm teaching again next spring!
Your friendly, festive reminder that feeling guilty about spending time with family over the holidays is a sign that your work environment is toxic, not that youโre doing something wrong
T-60 days until my teaching debut. I donโt know how many students I have yet. But I was asked if there is a textbook (thereโs not), and I sent the Syllabus to a potential student. ๐ซ
A โculture of lifeโ?
Florida has the largest death row population of all states that continue executions.
Our fifth execution of 2023 is scheduled for August 3, 2023.
Today we celebrate the anniversary of the Dobbs decision.
Florida is proof that with bold leadership we can expand pro-life protections & provide more resources for mothers and families.
I will always champion a culture of life.
There have been *at least* two times in the past week or so where I've been on a call and the other person said, "If you have an attorney...," to which I said "I am the attorney."
This country has failed to complete THREE executions in recent months. THREE people who laid on their death beds and then got up after being tortured because the State failed to complete their goal of killing them. I can't even imagine.
@TaxLawProf
I had no idea Bible highlighters were a thing.
Now that I do Iโm so curious what the inventors would think of them being used for the Tax Code. ๐
I left 3 sticks of butter on the counter to bake a cake for my Momโs birthday this weekend. Came home and 2.5 sticks of butter (wrappers included) were gone and this was the dogโs face. ๐ง
Accusing Smith, who was just suffocated by the government, of attempting to โgame the systemโ is beyond comprehension. He and his attorneys were fighting for his life and a humane death.
Even if you agree with executing those on death row, they are human. We should be ashamed.
Story at the link includes Gov. Kay Ivey's statement on the execution of Kenneth Smith by nitrogen hypoxia, Smith's last words, and what witnesses saw during the execution:
Iโve lived in Florida my whole life. I swear this summer feels hotter than ever. I donโt even want to go outside.
Then I remember thereโs no air conditioning on death rowโneither in Florida nor Texas.
What are we doing?
Wrigley updateโgood news.
Results today from his procedure last week: no cancer. ๐
He has ulcers in his tummy and inflammation in his intestines (IBD). He also has a rare bacteria. We will treat for the bacteria and start a food trial. ๐พ
Thx to everyone for the support. ๐ค
If Iโm being honest, Iโm a mess.
Wrigley has been in and out of the hospital since Saturday. Yesterday, I drove him to the ER at
@UF
Small Animal Hospital to try to get him the best care I can to try to figure out whatโs going on and get him some relief.
An amicus curiae brief written by a Quarles team in support of a Florida death row prisoner was quoted in a News Service of Florida article about multiple challenges to a recent change to Floridaโs capital sentencing law.

: here are some things you can do to positively contribute during this time of social distancing:
1. Pro Bono - Help someone in need.
2. Write a law review article on an issue you feel is important.
3. Reach out and help a law student study for exams.
4. CLE courses
The finals are graded. The students' submissions brought me to tears.
Seeing the students engage with the material in such a meaningful way to provide thoughtful reflections on capital sentencing and realizing I played a part in that education was absolutely incredible. 1/

Let's talk about executions for a moment.
Tonight, Georgia plans to execute Willie Pye. If completed, it will be the State's first execution since Jan. 2020.
His final claims remain pending at SCOTUS.
