With Aurelion Sol launched, I wanna take a bit to shout out some of the amazing folk who contributed to our star dragon's glow up (in no particular order).
Hey there Twisted Fate enjoyers! We've got some AD Twisted Fate (Crit-sted Fate? On-Hitsted Fate?) buffs coming to PBE. Our goals are to expand his itemization options and make AD TF more strategically viable. We still intend for AP to be his main build that we balance around.

ASol buffs coming to PBE for 14.3! The goal of these buffs is to make ASol feel better about the new item system, give him more early game agency to cast his spells, and to push him towards more proactive play using Q+W. (1/3)
For clarity sake because people are feeling strongly that this may be too much of a nerf: most champions launch with a winrate in the low to mid 40% range and as the champion is mastered that winrate climbs over time. (1/5)

Super excited for you all to get your hands on ASol, as he is my first major project as a designer on the Champions team! The whole ASol squad poured a lot of love and hard work into our beloved sassy star dragon. I can't wait to see the crazy stuff y'all do with him.

Minutes ago, we shared an important update with Rioters about the future of Riot Games. Here’s what these changes mean for our games and what players can expect from us going forward:
ASol 13.8 Changes: ASol's normal skill level play is just a tad over expectation - I'd rather we not hit his damage any more than we already have if we don't have to, so opting for more stat growth hits.
13.6 ASol Nerfs
- Q damage nerfs are targeted at lower-elo play.
- E and R changes are intended to lower frustration around wave stalling and teamfight wombo-combos.
Just a bit of context on the minor ASol nerfs coming in 13.5 - we are specifically looking to hit lower skill play with minimal impact on higher skill level play (where ASol is hovering around a healthy winrate)
Larger scope changes to LB, Yuumi, Jungle adjustments (+power into farming/counterjg, nerfing ganking), Azir.
Still mostly following up from Navori changes, Jungle adjustments and getting Mage items into a better spot.
After this, gearing up for MSI focused balance from 13.6
For Jax’s update I took over from August like two months ago. Mostly just fixed bug fixing and supporting other peoples needs. Team took on extra work to make fishing cool so big props to them. The fishing rules were my one real contribution to Jax. Hope y’all enjoy his new look!
We are pushing his stacking towards proactive play and early game agency and away from optimizing stacks gained from E. The intention of giving ASol more early game agency is to make it so he must use that agency to meaningfully scale (2/3)
ASol launching at closer to 50% winrate with a ~40% ban rate is spooky because if we left him in that state over the weekend it is entirely possible he would break 55% winrate by Monday and would be a terror. (2/5)
So, if we did in fact overnerf him this weekend I want to be clear about things. We did and do not intend to gut him - ASol is awesome and we want people to get to play and enjoy him. The player response to him has been overwhelmingly positive and we love that! (4/5)
So rather than being able to do so by biding his time or dropping E on a fight and waiting for allies to cleanup, the onus is now more on ASol to succeed rather than it being a matter of time (3/3)
It is theoretically possible that ASol has very little in the way of winrate growth and that his pay against is deeper than his play as, but champ release history suggests otherwise as the only champion to ever do that is Neeko. (3/5)
Secondly, this is a learning process - Aurelion Sol has a lot of unique things going on in his kit and tuning them throughout development has definitely been tricky. I have great confidence we have the necessary knobs to turn to get him where he should be in the long term (5/5)
My next champ project made it's first internal playtest appearance tonight - had to swap off because it was doing illegal things and was critically overtuned, oops - made for good laughs though

easily Liandry's - ROA is too greedy; if the game is going long enough for ROA to get value, you probably didn't need it because you are late game ASol that was allowed to scale and exist

Fish provide gold and AP for 5 seconds. Normal fish give 1 gold and 1 AP, rare fish give 10 gold and 10 AP. My hope is that any time anyone does work on Jax that they expand the fishing mini game rules a bit :)

August rescripted him for the recent update, also took a new approach for how we do animation overrides for legendary skins (Mecha Kingdoms). Our engineer Bryce M took that on for the most part, def a learning process but I think it will be what we do going forward for new champs

We believe he has a real, but not crazy steep, learning curve. Most players first time on him is usually tough, so we do expect his winrate day 1-3 to be on the lower side with a steady climb by the end of 1 week post-release as players figure him out.

Passive stacks infinitely!
R transformation is not permanent; once you hit level 6 it begins tracking your passive stack gains. Once you hit the required amount, it empowers the next cast. After casting it, you then have to reacquire the stacks to get another empowered cast.

ASol has a fight pattern based on cleaning up fights with his W resets, the shockwave enables that but isn't meant to just kill people outright

People seem to be enjoying him and excited to play him, which is awesome! He is probably a bit overtuned at the moment but we will be doing adjustments in the next day or 2 alongside bug fixes. I also think some of his power is people not knowing what to do against him.
So moving across the country is pretty exciting, but also massively stressful - thankfully the most annoying bits are done (packing all my stuff, putting it on a truck, fittings all the things I actually need into 2 bags).

I think we are expecting Q changes to be pretty power neutral. I’d anticipate E is a few percent stronger than live but not enough to warrant us preemptively cutting the damage. That said, if it turns out to be a bit over, changes will follow while keeping the new cast paradigm.

Kinda worked on them at the same time for a while.
Kassadin was started earlier, consisted of a lot of experimentation and me getting comfortable with tools, scripting, etc. and ASol was always the priority in terms of my attention.

I am going to look for ways to make his jungle clear a bit healthier but it has to be in a way that does not allow midlane to easily steal camps from both sides. It is on my mind but no promises of immediate change

In 13.4 there are a number of bug fixes, quality of life changes, and some SFX changes to champ select, ashen lord, and storm dragon skins (I don’t have the details on the SFX changes). All the quality of life and bug fixes should be in the patch notes

Yes! Making sure to record all the games so there is a trove of clips for later! Also the other teams like Summoners Rift and Game Analysis typically record their games so hopefully I can publish a doc or thread on the design as it evolves.
Time to talk about 2021. High highs and low lows kind of comes out to average, but with some great takeaways. Overall, I end 2021 optimistic, ambitious, better at some things, and decidedly unhappy.

That spell is super weird - it has basically 0 base damage and a crazy functional AP ratio. Some on the team wanted to hit it down harder haha.
It is also paired w/ a unlisted Q bugfix that helps his wave clear a tiny bit so I was a little less worried about the ratio nerf.

There was never any consideration to making the stats last all game haha. Don’t want to actually encourage people to sit in river and fish for power, it’s just mean to be cute fun.
