Wow, an upset of historic proportions in Loving County, Texas — America’s least-populous county. Frankie Lozada, a total rando, has obliterated President Biden by 100 points. He captured all 1 votes, decisively outpacing Biden’s 0. Here’s what this means for November:

At long last, time to reveal my big project: a look at the recent Democratic decline in Appalachia. I’m focusing on three presidential elections with non-incumbents over eight-year spans: 2000, 2008, and 2016. Before I get into analysis, here is the map of 2000.

Biden and the Dem Senate have rapidly turned around the composition of our lower courts. Democratic-appointed justices now have majorities on more courts of appeals (1st, 2nd, 4th, 9th, 10th, DC, and federal) than GOP-appointed justices (3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th)

In our highly polarized Congress, Puerto Rican statehood is a rare issue with real bipartisan support. This is a map of House members who have cosponsored H.R. 1522 to admit it as a state. Admitting PR is good for our democracy and theirs. Baffling that Dems haven't acted on it.

Losing an election can be tough. Losing to a corpse is even tougher. Rep. Patsy Mink (D) died on Sept. 28, 2002, 38 days before the midterms. She remained on the ballot anyway, and voters decided they'd rather have an empty desk in Congress than Republican Bob McDermott.

It’s incredible how little the Senate does in general. And I’m not even talking about big, polarizing legislation. A brief search led me to find a ton of bipartisan, positively impactful bills that passed the House this session only to die in the Senate:

Maryland has to be the most Democratic Party-loving state in U.S. history. Republicans last won the State Senate in 1898. The State House they nabbed more recently—only 103 years ago. Virtually no version of party coalitions since 1900 has changed that. Maryland loves Democrats.

With 92% of the vote reporting and more than 5 million votes counted, Gary Peters leads John James by just 1,020 votes in the battle for Michigan’s Senate seat.

It's hard to believe it but there are just 100 districts left in my project. What a journey... but it's not done yet. Here's what I've done (and what I have left). If you want me to pull an old one up, comment which one you'd like on this post. And as always, thank you!!!

James Carville once famously said that Pennsylvania is “Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.” Pennsylvania’s 12th district includes much of that conservative land between the cities. This #DistrictOfTheDay ’s has seen a surprisingly large shift since Obama 2012.

New York’s 22nd district was so close in 2020 that no winner was seated in Congress for over a month. And to think that its 109-vote margin wasn’t even the narrowest of the cycle! Republicans won the battle for the seat, but the war may go to Democrats in redistricting.

Last year marked the end of an era when conservative Democrat Collin Peterson finally fell victim to realignment. Minnesota’s 7th district relied on his agricultural expertise for decades, but in the end this #DistrictOfTheDay simply wanted to be represented by a Republican.

I’m not quite old enough to gamble, but if I were, I could be talked into putting some money on Vermont’s at-large district looking the same after redistricting. After all, this #DistrictOfTheDay has gone almost 90 years without a makeover. (We should all be so lucky.)

With Texas becoming increasingly competitive, Tennessee is now the state where Donald Trump got his largest raw vote margin in 2020. That’s in part thanks to our #DistrictOfTheDay , Tennessee’s 8th district, which voted for the former president by more than 30 points.

And with today’s #DistrictOfTheDay , I am officially more than halfway through this project. It’s been quite an undertaking, but I’ve enjoyed writing it. Here's a map of all the districts I’ve profiled so far. If you’d like me to pull an old one up for you, just comment below.

If you predicted that one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump would be Tom Rice, you might just be clairvoyant. The representative from South Carolina’s 7th district did it out of nowhere, just days after voting to reject the results of the election.

I’ll conclude by saying this: no Democrat is going to win a majority of counties in Appalachia. But losing by 20 and losing by 50 makes a huge difference. Appalachia cuts through some of the most competitive states—Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania. Surviving there matters.

Don’t think I ever realized how lopsided the Ohio House popular vote was in favor of Republicans. And every seat was contested by both parties. Yikes for Democrats 😬.

It’s extremely rare for a Supreme Court justice to run for office but it has happened. The 1916 Republican nominee for president was Charles Evans Hughes, who served on the Court from 1910 to 1916. It’s interesting that we don’t even consider them as potential candidates anymore.

Nebraska’s an interesting state. It looks extremely rural but in actuality 56% of its votes cast in 2020 came from just three counties (Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy).
