Honestly most of your job as a game dev is just uttering to yourself "why the fuck is this doing that?" followed by an hour or so of investigation and a final "oohhhhhhhhh."
Literally All Devs: NFTs are impractical and we can already do all that stuff without the blockchain.
Armchair Tech bros: Nah, but blockchain though so it's better.

Me: Hey Unreal docs. What does this C++ function do?
Unreal: This is a function called "function."
Me: I saw that looking at the source, can you give me a code snippet showing an example use case?
Unreal: No...
Me:...
Unreal: Here's a blueprint node!
Game development is 30% coding and 60% furiously clicking through things again and again to try to get to that one feature you're working on and test the change you just made.
I am enjoying my time learning Unreal but HOLY FUCK is it almost impossible to learn ANYTHING about the C++ side of things. SEO is bullshit and their documentation sucks ass. Like, holy fuck.
so I've been trying to be as transparent as possible without breaking NDAs to update the community
and some people decide I'm paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as a PR stunt and I'm not even a game developer

As someone who has worked from home most of his adult life. I can attest that WFH is almost definitely not the problem.
What *is* problematic is a person's work space, recreational space, social space, eating space and resting space all being the same.
I'm getting fed up of articles that attribute a decline in mental health during the pandemic to people working from home. How about a year where we all work from home but we can see friends, travel, go to shows, restaurants, go to the gym, and THEN see how mental health is doing?
"We thought the fall was only a few meters. Now, we know it's thousands. It'll kill you!"
"We voted to jump off of this bridge."
"You're going to get seriously injured, you sure it's not worth reconsidering?"
"It's undemocratic to reconsider. Jump means jump! Simple as that"
Want to quickly / dynamically draw any list of enums in Editor Windows? Today I've learned how to write a Static Editor Method that can generically process any list of enums and show them as thier Enum Popup. :D

I think one of the biggest mistakes Unity is making compared to Unreal, and why so many people are more hyped for Epic announcements is that Unity are forcing people to pay for most of their acquisitions still...
Whereas Epic acquire something, and make it free.
This is huge. ๐ฒ I've gained around 5000 subs in the past month alone.
I started this channel last year as a little hobby side project for myself, and over the past few months it's absolutely been blowing up.
I'm so humbled so many people have found my ramblings so useful. ๐
Hot Damn.
So, the channel broke 10,000 subscribers last night. ๐ฒ
That was my goal for the END OF THE YEAR. ๐จ
Overwhelmed with how positively these videos have been recieved. Thanks to everyone who has subscribed so far! โฅ๏ธ
Dear Unity,
Please stop marking your classes as internal. You're making our lives intentionally more difficult.
Sincerely,
Everyone trying to write tools
I just spent multiple hours building a camera tool in Unity to make screenshots for videos faster to take with adjustable Depth of Field controls...
Guess how many hours were actually spent building the tool, and how many were just flying around taking pretty photos. ๐
At 8PM tonight, I'm doing my first live training session for
@unity3d
- showing how to use scriptable objects to skin & extend your UI behaviours. Both nerveous & excited. If you've got time come watch!
Noclip are an institution that greatly benefits our industry by bridging the gap between how gamers think games are made and the actual struggles we go through.
If you work in games and don't follow/support these guys, you're doing yourself a disservice.
Incredible work.

If you're not a fan of ads, you could also pay for premium and help all the creators you watch for free earn money.
It's honestly the best value of all the streaming services for me, considering how much YouTube I usually watch in a month.
@johnriccitiello
Actions speak louder than words JR. Maybe start caring for those of us using the engine everyday. Actually improve the core product, stop considering projects/teams like Gigaya a "waste of resources", and maybe consider there's more to your product than just printing money
The blistering level of contempt that self-identifying Conservatives have for the working class of the UK, is truly unparalleled.
They straight up just argue rich people are superior and just... get away with it.
Madness. ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ

Shoutout to the people on the street being "bored of brexit" not realising it's going to be dominating political news for the next 10+ years because funnily enough -- it's not quite as "simple" as those who voted to leave believe it to be.

It's no wonder everyday people don't understand the complexity of game development, because it's fucking crazy to comprehend.
I frequently write code and forget entirely what it does, why I wrote it in the first place or what else relies on it.
No other job is like this. ๐
Holy crap I figured it out. This is a fucking weird ass edge case.
Apparently if you uncheck the splash screen option in the player settings it doesn't load the mouse texture properly...
The fix is to Enable the Splash in Settings but keep blank and Disable the Unity Logo. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Already in Unreal and fucking around with how it looks.
I genuinely think I can get the aesthetic I've been chasing in Unity up and running in way less steps. I'm excited.
Watch this space...
I'm super excited to announce the latest project by

@Kid_Desimo
and myself.
Routed is a casual management sim coming to PC, Mac, Android and iOS.
Here's the trailer. It's in open beta now!
RT's appreciated :)
We're thrilled to announce Routed - Grow your fleet, manage their routes and race to pick-up riders in this ride-share simulation game. ๐ ๐ ๐ How long can you last before your rating hits zero? ๐ฑ๐ฎ Play the beta now and join the community at

This change is not just about financials for so many people, it's way more broadly about what this change represents regarding the relationship Unity has with its developers. You really aren't listening on that aspect and it's what's going to drive so many people away.
So, this seems to resonate with y'all. ๐๐ guess this is the perfect opportunity to promote the subject of this tweet - my business-management RPG

One of the many upsides to the rather large delay this year on
@IndieTrainJam
is being able to see some of the sights that are often in the dark. We're usually here about 9pm on Friday.
While it's still a meaningful statement.
I am sad that this is not the letter Marc originally shared with some of us, as it was originally much more heartfelt than this.
I genuinely think he did as much as he could, and fought other management to make many of these changes.
Week one in Canada so far:
- Scored an apartment for October.
- Did government required admin stuff.
- Sorted a bank account.
- Swapped License over to BC.
- Found potential VFX/Unity work.
Not bad.
Now I just need to make some friends... ๐
People responding to Unreal users saying "Just use Godot" and like, sure pal.
Point me to a professional project that pays upwards of $80k/y using Godot and fine. Until then, sit the fuck back down.

As a member of the insider group, I'm grateful Unity put this message out, because we asked them to say *SOMETHING* to at least confirm they're working to fix this mess even if we have no-idea what that fix will be...
We have heard you. We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy we announced on Tuesday caused. We are listening, talking to our team members, community, customers, and partners, and will be making changes to the policy. We will share an update in a couple of

It is definitely frustrating to know that hundreds of people work on the games he directs, yet he is often given all the credit -- I doubt they'd be anywhere near as good without his engineers/designers, yet you will rarely hear him talk about his team.
Western TV anchors and "journalists" you could learn a thing or two about integrity in this interview. Watch how she actively respects her audience and stops the spread of lies from this guy! Mad respect for New Zealand.
An historic Day 4 of

But, we're not your everyday train persons.
We are Train Jammers, and the morale remains overwhelmingly high.
Emotional day today. Travelling back home reflecting on my time in Brighton. What a phenomenal city full of phenomenal people. Nowhere else like it in the UK. Thank you to everyone who welcomed me and made these past three years amazing. โค Next stop Vancouver! (on Wednesday)
Iโm adding some new player characters to Punch Kick Duck, so I made this quick overview of creating a froggy character ๐ธ

After playing around and throwing myself into a crash-course with the Unity GraphView and UIElement workflow this week I can admit that I am a fan.
Been building out a Behaviour Tree tool for
@livingthedeal
and am super stoked about it.
Okay Unity 2020.3 is now LTS. We've been on 2019.
So, it took an hour to upgrade the project but all those editor improvements from 2020.2 and these changes from last week have made using Unity fun again!
Well done

optimisation team. ๐๐ป Bravo and thankyou!
So, I spent ALL DAY refactoring two projects to use Assembly Definition Files and oh my god why doesn't unity enforce this by default?! It's reduced compile times SIGNIFICANTLY
Living The Deal would hang for around 60s after a script change. Now it's around 10-15s. Game changer!
Good lord. It is entirely possible I'll have 100k subscribers by the end of the year... ๐ฌAt this rate, I'll have to actually pivot to this full-time ๐
Would be cool to have a little plaque though... ๐ค
Pretty much done with the Interior Mapping experiement now.
Did a little city mockup with some post-processing and reflections to really sell the effect.
