Being angry at an athlete for retiring "early" to preserve his lifelong health is a mistake. They're human beings, not robots put on display for your entertainment.
Seems like an appropriate time to repost this picture of
@TJMcConnell
from high school, sent to me by his father. No matter what he looks like he plays a man’s game. Never more than today, when he scored 12 points off the bench and had a team-high 7 assists in the W in New York.
The transfer portal full of dreaming players looking for greener grass that might not exist. If anyone had a legit argument for moving on it was
@BoilerBall
's Brandon Newman, but he's sticking it out. He explains why:
Both of these guys were hugely unpopular with Pacers fans 10 years ago. Hibbert for disappearing in the playoffs and Stephenson for jumping on Charlotte’s free agent offer. Time heals all. It’s human nature to want to focus on the positive memories.
TJ Warren just getting worse and worse in Orlando. From 53 points to 34 to 32. Needs to find a way to stop this downward spiral against his former team on Thursday.
Greg Anthony on NBA TV: "The Pacers are the biggest surprise in the league. Nate McMillan, Coach of the Year, right now. And Victor Oladipo has been an all-star. Period. End of story."
Glad to see
@VicOladipo
participate in our democracy. If you are offended simply because his viewpoint is different than yours, remember Bob Knight and Gene Keady were on the campaign trail for Trump. Nobody has to stick to sports.
I've been making some calls, letting former Pacers know about Slick Leonard's passing. Their immediate reaction says all you need to know about what they thought of him. He commanded their respect when they played for him and forever after.
Many
@Pacers
fans who watched the 2020
@NBA
draft were disappointed their team didn't have a 1st-round pick. Little did they know they had 4 and other teams would handle the break-in process. Obi Toppin went 8th, Jalen Smith 10th, Tyrese Haliburton 12th and Aaron Nesmith 14th.
.
@Darren_Collison
was great to cover. Fans don't need to care about that, but he also was an underrated player w/ the Pacers. Leading the NBA in 3-point % and assist-to-turnover ratio two seasons ago was a major accomplishment.
Pacers have 10 of their final 18 games at home. Seven of the home games are against teams with losing records. But five of the eight road games are against winning teams. Pacers currently on pace to win 50 games.
.
@VicOladipo
spoke with Larry Bird following practice on Thursday. "He’s been in thousands and thousands of playoff games. Lot of listening, lot of question-asking. Just trying to soak it all in."
"Can you share what he told you?"
"Not at all."
In all my years of covering the Pacers, don't believe I witnessed a better leader than
@yungsmoove21
. Spoke up, but never in a selfish or angry manner. Mature, soft-spoken and a team-first guy who knew what to say and when to say it.
I'm told
@BoilerBall
freshman Fletcher Loyer had an occasion to meet former Purdue All-American Rick Mount a few days ago. Mount give him a shooting tip - get off the ground when you shoot, not on your toes. Loyer had a career high 27 points tonight. Maybe not a coincidence.
No announcer has been more welcomed into a program than Larry Clisby was at Purdue, thanks to Gene Keady,
@CoachPainter
and
@erbloom
. In tribute, I have removed the paywall from my One on One episode with him at . To know him was to love him.
Caught this moment in
@Pacers
game.
@TJMcConnell
hardly plays any longer despite consistent production but still shows a great attitude on the bench. Here, counseling, Aaron Nembhard. At least I assume they’re talking about the game. Most likely.
Brandon Newman of
@BoilerBall
has emerged in recent weeks as a starter and key contributor for the
@bigten
championship team. I wrote about his decision not to take the easy way out and transfer in this article for
@ibjnews
last summer. Paywall removed.
Lance Stephenson has at various times been a good fit for the Pacers and at other times has not. But this seems like a time when he could be a good fit.
.
@Dsabonis11
on whether he'll lord his all-star selection over his dad, Arvydas, who did not make an NBA all-star game while playing for Portland at the end of his career: "I’m never going to say anything to my dad. To me he was one of the greatest. I can’t even compare."
Probably not a coincidence that
@Pacers
are 6-0 when
@Original_Turner
plays >26 minutes. People who wrote him off didn't consider he had yet to play w/ Haliburton and in a comfortable niche as veteran leader overshadowed by nobody. ...
Matt Painter is getting a lot of credit for the plays Micah Shrewsberry draws up in huddles. Shrewsbury is a great x-and-o coach. But give credit to Painter for being a low ego coach who delegates.
Sorry to report that Jerry Harkness has passed away. A member of the original
@Pacers
team and a truly exceptional human being, he will be sorely missed in Indianapolis and by all who knew him. Among many accomplishments, led Loyola to 1963 NCAA championship...
The
@Pacers
trade with Sacramento has worked out well for both teams. So has their trade with Boston. Their trade with Cleveland last season likely will as well. So much happiness...
Duarte and LeVert were overlapping players. By trading LeVert the
@Pacers
created more opportunity for Duarte, who is the better all-around player. They obviously have to make good use of the acquired draft picks for the trade to be successful, however
I heartily endorse the Netflix doc "Untold: Malice at the Palace." Puts it all into perspective. As the
@Pacers
beat writer for
@indystar
at the time I could have contributed a lot to it, but so could others who were not involved. Bottom line is that ...
Heard tonight Purdue will wear the uniforms from the 1969 NCAA finalist team for a game in January. If they are really brave they will go with the two-toned road set.
Just got word that Jimmy Rayl, a.k.a. The Splendid Splinter, passed away this afternoon. He was Mr. Basketball in 1959, set a Big Ten scoring record with 56 points at IU and was an original Pacer. Helluva good guy. Nobody loved playing basketball more than him. Story coming soon.
If people were as angry about blatant examples of social injustice as they are about kneeling for an anthem, we wouldn't be in this mess. Kneeling is a respectful position of its own. Same as with prayer. It's not like they're turning their back or staying in the locker room.
Not interested in hearing anyone who thought Nate McMillan was a lousy coach with the Pacers suddenly claiming the Pacers made a mistake in letting him go. Own what you said last year.
Pacers could move into a tie for fourth in the East with a win over Washington on Monday, and would be one game back of Cleveland in third place. Cavs are floundering, Wizards have lost Wall, Pacers are getting
@GRIII
back. Going to be an interesting finish.
I asked Matt Painter a few months ago if Edey could step out and hit mid range shots. He said sure, but they didn’t need him to do it. I have no doubt he could be a three-point threat as well, given the chance. That might be the best argument for him returning for another year.
Aretha Franklin's father, C. L., was a famous preacher. When he lived in Memphis, he presided at the wedding for Saul and Carrie Miller, whose children would one day include
@ReggieMillerTNT
. So there's your sports angle to one of America's greatest singers.
Pacers weren't suckered into overpaying for Hayward or falling for the hometown angle. Plenty of improvement can be had from establishing chemistry among intended starting five that hardly played together last season, new offensive system, and basic maturation from young core.
Hearing why the Suns were willing to trade Smith for Torrey Craig. Smith's agent wanted him moved to a team where he had more opportunity and Chris Paul is a fan of Craig and wanted him back. Could be a major win for the Pacers if they give Smith an opportunity.
Tony and Lauren Kanaan obviously could afford to send their kids to a private school but prefer the Indianapolis Public Schools system for its quality and diversity. Article in this week's
@IBJnews
. Thanks to
@jakequery
for the tip.

In 18 minutes. He’s one reason why they shouldn’t be too eager to swing a big deal before the deadline. They might already have what they need on the roster. If a player they traded for had a game like this people would be ecstatic.
Isaiah Jackson is just the fourth player this season to have 10+ points, 5+ rebounds, 4+ blocks and 4+ steals in a game.

Sorry to report the passing of Cleveland Harp, pictured on the right next to Hallie Bryant. Cleve worked for many seasons as an usher at Pacers games and was a familiar presence in the end zone. He was an Attucks graduate who played one season for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Small example of TJ McConnell's humor in locker room after last night's
@Pacers
game: the media members were gathering in front of Sabonis' locker waiting to talk to him, with their backs toward McConnell 15 feet away. And he says loudly, "I'll be with you in a minute, guys!"
Former
@Pacers
trainer David Craig makes house calls to help former Pacer
@HOFMcGinnis30
walk unassisted. Story in this week's Indianapolis Business Journal and on website.
Seeing
@BoilerBall
fans be all ho-hum about clinching a share of the Big Ten championship is the most Purdue thing ever. Would you have taken this position at the beginning of the year regardless of how it was achieved? Will an outright title appease you?
While spending every day of the 1987-88 season with
@BoilerBall
to gather material for my book "Passion Play," I saw Bruce Weber up close. I can attest to his work ethic, decency and integrity. He deserves more credit for Gene Keady's success than most people realize.
You can’t deny the
@Pacers
benefited from injuries to Milwaukee and New York. But you take those breaks when you can get them because there will always be other times when you are at a disadvantage. You just hope it evens out.

Happy 72nd birthday to Indiana legend Rick Mount. He's still putting up shots and still teaching kids how to do it. His 61-point game vs Iowa in 1970 remains the Big Ten scoring record.
Turns out
@LScola4
had a lot of ball left in him when he was a 34-year-old member of the
@Pacers
back in 2015. He's 41 now and still playing for Argentina in international competition. More aerodynamic these days, however.
Lunch today with this group. Most of them played for the Washington HS state championship team in 1969. George McGinnis is closest to the camera. Steve Downing is behind him. Former Pacer Billy Knight, in white shirt in center, dropped in as well.
I don't cover Colts, but:
1. Josh McDaniels revealed his character tonight.
2. There's a better head coach than him out there somewhere. Finding him is the hard part.
3. You couldn't blame Mike Florio if he spiked a football tonight.
Many people call for the
@Pacers
to get a second star player. I’m not convinced Mathurin can’t be that guy. Just needs more opportunity. Hield is in the way of his development.
We all would be better off if groups, schools, media outlets, etc would directly expose and confront obvious acts of racism rather than trying to retroactively punish people for vague comments someone made decades ago that weren't intended to harm.
Watched the
@Pacers
game on a recording. It had the feel of one that will bring changes. Hield has played his way out of the starting lineup and is absolutely expendable, as I wrote in the preseason. It was weird to see….
One key to
@Pacers
success is team acceptance of
@VicOladipo
offensive role. Here's
@yungsmoove21
following W in Chi: "Before overtime started, I pulled him aside and I said ‘Hey, you know it’s time for you to take us to the promised land.’ And, he made plays. He made shots."
The name "Jalen" has become a phenomenon. According to research by
@espn
and myself, only one person in the history of the world had it before
@JalenRose
's mother, Jeanne, gave it to him in 1973. Now it's everywhere, especially in the sports world. I wrote about it for ...
Great calling, service and reception for former
@Pacers
coach Bobby Slick Leonard today. Darnell Hillman, George McGinnis and Bob Netolicky spoke at the service as did
@Mark_J_Boyle
and others.
One reason
@StephensonLance
is so valuable for the
@Pacers
now it is that Carlisle is so laid-back. He's a better coach for an emotional team than a laid-back team and Stephenson brings an emotional and macho element that was desperately needed.
The best indicator of
@Pacers
results once was # of shots Oladipo took: <15, they were nearly unbeatable; >20, they were terrible.
@MalcolmBrogdon7
has a similar offensive game and the same holds true for him. They are 5-1 when he takes <15 and 1-6 when he takes 20 or more.
The reason
@StephensonLance
plays better for the
@Pacers
than any other team is simple. Their coaches haven't been afraid to give him some freedom. You have to put the ball in his hands.
Here's how weird the NBA draft can be. The Sporting News predicted Aaron Holiday would go 16th to the Suns, then gave the
@Pacers
a C for taking him at 23. USA Today nailed the pick, predicting he would go to the Pacers at 23, then gave them a C for taking him.
Really sad to see that
@jakequery
and
@Schultz975
are no longer part of the local sports talk radio scene. They brought humor, heart and an IQ to the airwaves. Some smart radio executive will find a place for them.
Indy's pro teams have had their share of good luck lately. Like Josh McDaniels backing out of the Colts' coaching job, Paul George unexpectedly asking for a trade and Victor Oladipo getting injured. All three seemingly negative occurrences turned out to be huge positives.
The
@Pacers
have rarely swung a trade for a previous NBA all-star such as Pascal Siakam. Only ones I find are George McGinnis, Billy Knight, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin and Peja Stojakovic.
Anyone still wondering if
@StephensonLance
is worth the "issues?" Finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two turnovers in 30 minutes. Good job defending LeBron, who hit 11-25 shots.
