‼️"Quantifying attrition in science: a cohort-based, longitudinal study of scientists in 38 OECD countries"‼️
Thousands of scientists tracked over time - how they disappear from science?
Interesting! DiD methodology!
"Junior researchers who coauthor work with top scientists enjoy a persistent competitive advantage throughout the rest of their careers, compared to peers with similar early career profiles but without top coauthors".

"Scientists are unwilling to move when their children are 14–17. Elite scientists find it costly to disrupt the social networks of their children during adolescence and take these costs into account when making career decisions".
Luck in academic careers:
"Luck is never the main thing that our interlocutors discuss, but it persistently recurs as an aspect of narrations of careers and work practices".
Nature:
‼️An analysis of the publication records of academic editors shows that one-quarter of them publish 10% of their own papers in the journals they edit.
‼️Fewer than 10% of editors-in-chief are women.

Strong evidence for the status bias: while only 23 % recommend “reject” when the prominent researcher is the only author shown, 48 % do so when the paper is anonymized, & 65 % do so when the little-known author is the only author shown
Changing publishing patterns in Social Sciences vs. Humanities, 2000-2020: divergent trajectories!

Substantial attrition of new parents; nearly one-half of new mothers and nearly one-quarter of new fathers leave full-time STEM employment after having children.

See my new paper on "The Globalization of Science":
Global survey: nearly half of higher education staff say they are likely to leave the sector in the next five years because of excessive workloads despite appreciating the benefits of more flexible working.
