It was amazing to work on the #BBCElection24 coverage this week. My role was to program and operate the vision mixer (a @GrassValleyLive Kahuna 9600), working with engineering, graphics, editorial and most importantly @chrisckmedia to make the BBC’s creative ideas a reality. A 🧵

Very proud to have developed the vision mixer programming for the relaunched BBC NEWS CHANNEL, providing lots of flexibility for directors and editorial. It’s been a labour of love (that will keep on progressing), very glad to see it launched! :-)

I could also go from a 2-box (or 3/4/5/6 box) to any of these boxes, although we didn’t really do much of that on the night, but we COULD have 😉. Here’s one time we did it, but then we lost the live feed on the hub boxes.

I could automatically stop macros and replace them with others, add additional steps, remove keys. On air here’s what it looked like (first example, hub boxes to pushback)

I wanted to be able to go from any box to any box at any time, but by pressing as few buttons as possible (the first thing to go in a stressful situation is my brain 😉). I used the Kahuna’s GPI logic to help me out. Think “if this then that”…

With the Kahuna’s GPI logic, if certain conditions are met, the GPI tallies red and as soon as this happens it triggers a macro attached to the GPI. This allowed me to change the look on screen in a similar way to VIZ’s transition logic.

All of these examples were triggered by pressing 4 buttons. Very easy for me operating overnight. Even though there were actually 10 possible variants. (WAT>WAT, WAT>PB, WAT>HUB, WAT>FF, PB>WAT, PB>PB, PB> HUB, HUB>WAT, HUB>PB, HUB>HUB). This was achieved thanks to the GPI logic.

@rsmck @GrassValleyLive @chrisckmedia I was definitely more across the graphics once they’d entered the vision mixer… but I do know the BBC Graphics team were using OBS with HTML5 rendered GFX, like you say. The only VIZ we used this year was for the AR (and the image in the Tower for the exit poll reveal).

@tobbleblog This VM we used has a feature called “effects dissolve” that nicely transitions to the next memory loaded. However, to make it more robust, I used macros to make sure that the start and end of the transition was reliably correct (never had to rely on the previous memory loaded)
