28.11.1925| Serra Adler was born in Urspringen. She was among the German Jews deported from Würzburg to the Lublin district on 25.04.1942. Serra was eventually taken to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Sobib ór. She was just 16 when she was killed in the gas chamber.

Urszula Tochman was only 13 when she was displaced from Tarnogród with her parents on 30.06.1943. She was deported to #Majdanek from the transit camp in Zwierzyniec & then taken to Germany for forced labor in Bavaria. She survived and returned to Poland in 1945. #WomenofMajdanek

Jadwiga Ankiewicz was a teenager caught in the street round-up in Warsaw on 15.01.1943. The German soldiers took her to the Gestapo Pawiak prison. Two days later she was deported to the concentration camp in Lublin and registered as prisoner no. 5322. #WomenofMajdanek

Bolesława Janiszek was arrested on 27.09.1942 in Warsaw. She was detained at the Gestapo Pawiak prison and subjected to numerous brutal interrogations. In January 1943 she was deported to #Majdanek and then evacuated to Ravensbrück. She survived. #WomenofMajdanek

10.12.1926| Sara Goldbaum was born in Lublin. Together with her parents, Srul & Chaja, she was locked in the #Lublin ghetto: the first ghetto liquidated during operation ‘Reinhardt’. The Goldbaums were murdered in the German Nazi extermination camp in #Be łżec in spring of 1942.

25.11.1924| Hella Weiss-Felenbaum was born in Lublin. In December 1942 she was transferred from the Staw-Nowosiółki labor camp to #Sobib ór. She worked in the sorting barrack & the camp garden. Hella escaped during the uprising on 14.10.1943, joined the partisans & survived WWII.

Alina Brewda worked as a physician in the Wola hospital & as a gynaecologist in the Jewish hospital in Warsaw. She was deported to #Majdanek after the fall of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Alina worked in the camp infirmary & continued her goal of helping others. #WomenofMajdanek

April 19, 1943 the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising broke out. SS units who entered the ghetto area were met with Jewish resistance. Despite fierce determination and courage of the insurgents, they could not withstand the assaults of the well-trained regular troops. #HolocaustMemorialDay

Jadwiga Wolska-Landowska was a 20-year-old Home Army solider when she was arrested by the Gestapo in November 1942. As a Polish political prisoner she was deported to #Majdanek from Radom on January 8, 1943. #WomenofMajdanek

Irena Marszałek was deported to #Majdanek from the Gestapo prison in Radom on 08.01.1943. Detained as a political prisoner at field V she worked in the camp laundry. In April 1944 Irena was transferred to Ravensbrück & then to Neubrandenburg. She survived. #WomenofMajdanek

Helena Pawluk née Błeszyńska worked for the Central Welfare Council – a charity that during WWII helped the prisoners of #Majdanek . When she learned that her family’s doctor & friend – a Polish Jew named Pryłucki – was detained in the camp, she helped him escape. #WomenofMajdanek

11.12.1942| Irena Pełka was arrested by Gestapo in Warsaw & detained in Pawiak. In January 1943 she was deported to #Majdanek . Registered as prisoner no. 4655 she worked in the Gärtnerei kommando. In April 1944 Irena was transferred to Ravensbrück & then to Leipzig. She survived.

Krystyna Pokorska was born in Lublin but eventually moved to Warsaw. Her husband was a member of the resistance and had to go into hiding. Gestapo agents could not find him so they arrested Krystyna instead. She was captured on 26.07.1942 & detained at Pawiak. #WomenofMajdanek

06.11.1942|Several thousand Jews were deported from the ghetto in Piaski to the German Nazi death camp in #Sobib ór. Among them there was Kurt Ticho (Thomas) the only Czech Jewish survivor of Sobibór. He worked in the camp sorting facility & escaped during the prisoners’ uprising.

Jadwiga Elżanowska was deported to #Majdanek from Pawiak on 17.01.1943. She spent 15 months in the camp as prisoner no. 5329 & worked in the camp laundry (Wäscherei) and gardening group (Gärtnerei). In April 1944 she was transferred to Ravensbrück. She survived. #WomenofMajdanek

26.06.1943|The last prisoners of #Be łżec, tasked with dismantling the camp infrastructure, were deported to #Sobib ór As eyewitnesses they were to be gassed upon their arrival. Willing to die with dignity, they attacked the guards at the Sobibór unloading ramp and were all shot.

11.05.1937| Lea Judith de la Penha was born. Together with her parents Judith & David she was sent to the #Westerbork transit camp and later to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Sobib ór. They were murdered in the gas chambers on 09.07.1943. Lea was just 6 years old.

09.11.1942|Gestapo agents arrested Matylda Woliniewska as a resistance member in Warsaw. She was taken to Pawiak & deported to #Majdanek in January 1943. As prisoner no. 4718 she was detained at field V. Matylda worked in the sanitary column & as a nurse in the women’s infirmary.

April 15, 1927, Tomasz Toivi Blatt, a prisoner and escapee from the German death camp in #Sobibor , was born. He was an active participant in the uprising and manged to escape from the camp. In 1959 he went to the USA, from where he repeatedly returned to Poland. He died in 2015.

Wanda Ossowska was a courier of the Home Army high command & head of an underground liaisons unit. She was arrested by Gestapo in August 1942, detained at Pawiak, subjected to torture and numerous interrogations. In January 1943 Wanda was deported to #Majdanek . #WomenofMajdanek

Bluma Shadur née Babic was a Polish Jew from Warsaw. She worked at a dyeworks & textiles factory at Miła St. She was deported to #Majdanek in May 1943 after the fall of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Bluma survived the preliminary selection to the gas chambers. #WomenofMajdanek

08.12.1941|Otto Hett was deported to #Majdanek from Dachau. Registered as a German prisoner no. 15 he worked as a doctor & greatly helped other inmates. He remained at Majdanek until its final days in July 1944. Otto did not survive, the SS-men executed him en route to #Auschwitz

30.01.1944| Jadwiga Ankiewicz was shot by the German soldiers in one of the streets of Warsaw. She was released from #Majdanek in May 1943 & despite her camp experiences she got engaged in the resistance as a Grey Ranks liaison. She survived Majdanek, but not the war. She was 17.

Miriam Prajs-Fajgenbaum was deported to #Majdanek from the Warsaw ghetto in May 1943. In July 1943 she was transferred to #Auschwitz , and later also to Gross-Rosen, Mauthausen & Bergen Belsen. She survived all those camps and lived in Israel after WWII. #WomenofMajdanek

20.02.1943|Kazimierz Kolbuszewski, literary historian, prof. at the Lwów and Wilno universities, perished at #Majdanek . He was arrested by the Gestapo for aiding Jews: he was giving shelter to a Jewish student & his Jewish housekeeper. He did not endure the hardships of the camp.

22.02.1909|Alexander Pechersky was born in Kremenchuk (Ukraine). As a captured Red Army lieutenant of Jewish origin, he was deported to the German Nazi death camp in #Sobib ór in September 1943. Together with Lejba Felhendler he planned and led the prisoner uprising of 14.10.1943.

08.05.1940| Tadeusz Kosibowicz, a Polish doctor & head of the county hospital in Będzin, was arrested by the Gestapo. He was sheltering Jewish patients with the so-called “Aryan papers” at his ward. Through Dachau & Sachsenhausen he was deported to #Majdanek in November 1941.

12.07.1944|Czesław Gaweł, prisoner no. 4199 escaped from #Majdanek . He stole a uniform from the head of the camp casino. Disguised as an SS officer he reached an unpatrolled section of the camp border, cut the barbed wire fence, left the uniform behind and went into the city.

06.12.1912|Symcha Białowicz (Bialowitz) was born in Izbica. He arrived at the German death camp in #Sobib ór on 28.04.1943, 3 months after his brother Philip. They both escaped during the prisoner uprising in October & survived WWII. Symcha settled in Israel & passed away in 2014.

03.11.1943| Operation “Erntefest” German police & SS functionaries executed 18,000 Jewish prisoners of #Majdanek & labour camps in #Lublin . Executions took place near the camp crematorium, later in Trawniki & the next day in Poniatowa. The total death toll reached 42,000 victims.

05.11.1943| The SS began destroying the evidence of operation ‘Erntefest’. Soviet POWs detained at #Majdanek systematically uncovered the execution ditches and burned the bodies. The two-month concealment process was supervised by the chief of the camp crematoria Erich Muhsfeldt.

23.01.1898| Franciszka Sandauer née Nelken was born in Husiatyn. In 1918 she fought defending Lviv as one of the Eaglets. In 1922 she graduated from the University of Lviv receiving a degree in medicine. She worked as a remarkable paediatrician and at a tuberculosis clinic.

21.06.1943| Polish Jew Jerzy Pfeffer escaped from #Majdanek while working in a sawmill outside the camp. During the Warsaw ghetto rising the Pfeffers were hiding in bunker. Discovered on 30.04.1943 they were deported to KL Lublin. Jerzy lost his entire family in the gas chambers.

16.04.1944|Two Polish prisoners: Feliksa Bidacha & Helena Żuk escaped from #Majdanek . They were aided by SS-Unterscharführer Otto Schultz. He hid them in laundry bags & drove them out of the camp. Read more about that unexpected help in our Escapes thread:

05.05.1942| Alfred Kwiatkowski was arrested by the Gestapo agents in Rejowiec. He was first sent to the labour camp in Trawniki & several days later to #Majdanek . Alfred managed to escape while working in a group that reloaded cargo at the Lublin’s train station in August 1942.

25.08.1942|2600 Jews were deported from the ghetto in Bochnia to the death camp in #Be łżec. All deemed “unfit for transportation” were herded into a nearby forest at the Baczków settlement and executed. Among the deportees there was David Ring and the local Judenrat members.

14.10.1943| Prisoner uprising in the German Nazi extermination camp SS-Sonderkommando #Sobibor took place. Thanks to the plan developed by Lejba (Leon) Felhendler & Alexander Pechersky the inmates secretly killed 9 SS-men and then stormed & breached the camp’s barbed wire fences.

30.12.1942|Blessed🇺🇦Priest Emilian Kowcz was arrested in Przemyślany for aiding, baptising & sheltering Jews. He was taken to the Gestapo prison at Łącki St. in Lviv from where he was deported to #Majdanek 8 months later. The parson of Majdanek perished in the camp in March 1944.

30.11.1942| #Holocaust : Between 2,000 and 3,000 Jews were deported from the Drohobycz county to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Be łżec and murdered in the gas chambers. Among them there were most probably Majer & Rozalia Weiler with their son.

13.04.1944|Evacuation transport with approx. 2600 prisoners was sent from #Majdanek to #Auschwitz . Among them there were infirmary patients & staff with the women’s hospital head dr Stefania Perzanowska. Read more about that event in our Evacuation thread:

31.01.1943| Jan Zakrzewski was deported to #Majdanek from the Łącki St. prison in Lviv. Registered as a political prisoner he worked in the burial & construction groups and in the SS canteen. He escaped from the last evacuation column in Lublin on 23 July 1944 & survived the war.

28.04.1943| Jadwiga Ankiewicz wrote in her Diary: A massive transport of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto arrived today. We found out from them that apparently a full-scale battle erupted and half of the quarter was now a smouldering ruin, buildings burning, basically a hell on Earth.

26.07.1942|The Germans arrested Krystyna Pokorska in Warsaw for her husband’s resistance involvement. First detained at Pawiak, she was deported to #Majdanek in January 1943. She worked in the camp laundry. Krystyna was later transferred to Ravensbrück & Velten. She survived.

05.12.1942| Around 3,000 Jews were deported from Przemyślany (Peremyshliany) to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Be łżec. The transport included the Jews who had been herded in from Gliniany (Hlyniany) several days earlier. They were all murdered in the gas chambers.

17.05.1943| Jadwiga Ankiewicz was released from the camp. Some people caught in massive street round-ups in Warsaw and deported to #Majdanek in January 1943 were then reported by their employers as essential workers and released (also through bribing the SS & Gestapo staff).

Zofia Pawłowska worked as a school deputy director in Kołomyja. Gestapo arrested her in November 1942 & sent her to the Łącki prison in Lviv. She was deported to #Majdanek in February 1943, worked at camp maintenance & was released on 10.08.1943. She survived. #WomenofMajdanek

17.07.1919|Eva-Brigitte Marum was born in Karlsruhe. In 1934 she emigrated from Germany to France. Caught in a street round-up in January 1943 she was later deported from Drancy to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Sobib ór. Eva was murdered in the gas chamber on 30.03.1943.

15.12.1942|Zofia Chlewicka was arrested in Warsaw for having a Home Amy letter drop point in her apartment. Imprisoned at Pawiak, tortured at the Gestapo headquarters in Szucha, she was deported to #Majdanek on 17.01.1943 & worked in the sanitary column of the camp infirmary.

18.07.1942|4,000 victims were deported from the ghetto in Rzeszów to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Be łżec. Over 1500 people deemed ‘unfit for transportation’ were instead herded into a forest outside the city and executed. All deportees were murdered in the gas chambers.

26.06.1943|Last prisoners of #Be łżec who dismantled the camp infrastructure were deported to #Sobib ór to be gassed upon arrival. Willing to die with dignity, they attacked the guards at the unloading ramp & were all shot. The sole survivor Chaim Hirszman escaped from the train.

16.08.1942|6500 Jews were deported from the Lviv ghetto to the German extermination camp in #Be łżec and murdered in the gas chambers. Among them there was Franciszka Sandauer, one of the 1918 defenders of Lviv known as Eaglets, a remarkable physician, chief paediatrician of Lviv.

12.07.1944|Czesław Gaweł, prisoner no. 4199 escaped from #Majdanek . He stole a uniform from the head of the camp casino. Disguised as an SS officer he reached an unpatrolled section of the camp border, cut the barbed wire fence, left the uniform behind and went into the city.

03.03.1881| Kazimierz Kryński was born: doctor of medicine, Polish Army & Home Army soldier. Soviets arrested him on 13.08.1944. NKVD detained him on Majdanek grounds. Major Kryński was deported to Ryazan on August 23. He returned to Poland in 1947 & worked as an ophthalmologist.

Jerzy Kwiatkowski wrote in his account: On November 13, they call me to the office. Hessel tells me that I’ve been assigned there and that my work begins at once. He tells me to bring my things from Block 15 at once. Hessel informs me that I’ll be in charge of the camp records.

As the #HolocaustRemembranceDay approaches #WeRemember Juan Luria (Johannes Lorié), opera singer born in Warsaw. In 1937 he emigrated to the Netherlands. At the turn of 1942/1943 he was deported to Westerbork & then to #Sobib ór. He was murdered in the gas chambers on 21.05.1943.

11.05.1943|Franciszek Jackiewicz was arrested by the Gestapo as a resistance member. First kept at the Lublin castle he was transferred to #Majdanek in August. As prisoner no. 6001 Franciszek was detained at fields III & IV. In April 1944 he was sent to #Mauthausen . He survived.

29.12.1943| Fr. Andrzej Osikowicz died at #Majdanek . He helped Jews by providing them with forged documents & giving shelter to Jewish children. In February 1943 he was transferred to KL Lublin from the Gestapo prison in Lviv. In 1995 he was declared #Righteous Among the Nations.

23.02.1935|David (Deddie) Zak was born. He lived with his parents, Judith & Simon, at Uiterwaardenstraat 71 in Amsterdam. The Zaks were deported to the German Nazi extermination camp in #Sobib ór & murdered in the gas chambers on 11.06.1943. Deddie was just 8 years old. #Holocaust
