Boston University students walked out of class today to protest the arrests of 100+ pro-Palestinian student demonstrators at Columbia University yesterday. Students at Harvard and MIT are also walking out today.
Yesterday was my last day as a metro co-op

I’m at Newton North High School, where educators are staging a strike. The overwhelming majority of Newton Teachers Association members voted last night in favor of the strike, after more than a year of often contentious contract negations with the district school committee.
So excited to share that starting in January, I will be spending six months as a metro co-op with

I’m at TD Garden in Boston for

On the ninth day of school closures due to teachers striking in Newton, nearly 2000 educators & parents are gathered outside the Education Center today in support of “Unit C” workers — behavioral therapists and teaching aides who are seeking higher wages.
@GlobeEducation
This group of middle schoolers from Sutton came decked out in green face paint, with numbers honoring their favorite players: 7 for Jaylen Brown, 11 for Payton Pritchard, and 42 for Al Horford. And an 18, to represent the 18th title they hope the C’s bring home tonight.
One way to bide your time while you wait for the parade? A game of catch.
Follow along with more live coverage of the parade, from fan stories to Celtics speeches,

Today I visited these BLM demonstrators at the corner of Broadway and Prospect in Cambridge. They’re there every Friday, and have been for almost two years since the murder of George Floyd.
FYI, this pic on the cover of my Twitter profile for months is from a weekly demo in

started by citizens who care

. They show up and stand at the corner of Broadway / Prospect EVERY Friday 4.30pm for an hour or so - these days in freezing temps.

With Game 4 of the

tonight, the Celtics are eyeing an 18th championship. But for some young fans — who were born after 2008, the last time the C’s won — this would be a first. 💚☘️

A pro-Palestine sit-in, 57 arrests, then revoked study abroad eligibility. Three UMass Amherst students say they’re being treated unfairly b/c of their political views — but the university says it’s just standard procedure.

The volume of protests over racial injustice decreased after summer 2020, but this group of activists has kept with it. Why? Allen Meyers tells the story of a Black woman who pulled over one Friday to personally express gratitude for what he and the others were doing.

“I was moved,” Meyers said. Positive reactions like these motivate him to return to that street corner every week. Plus, he tallies the number of honks they get from passing cars & sends it to the group’s email list each week! (35+ honks in 30min today)
After circling surrounding blocks, the demonstrators returned to the high school, where they chanted: “What do we want? Fair contract! When do we want it? Now!” before dispersing to make calls to elected officials.
Teachers began marching around the streets surrounding the high school around 9:30 a.m. Many carried signs reading “NTA on strike” and “fair contract now” as they led chants through speakerphones and banged on makeshift drums. Passing cars honked their support.
Nothing I enjoy more than deeply analyzing a seemingly insignificant conversation for its subliminal implications - and regretting not saying all the things I wish I had said! Read about it:
Caught up with some Newton teachers who were recharging and debriefing at a Brighton bar between rallies today. Some are feeling warily hopeful as the teachers’ union & school committee inch closer to a contract agreement.

Newton Teachers Association members are rallying outside the State House today, hoping to urge Gov. Maura Healey to mediate contract negotiations with the district’s school committee.

I also spoke with Newton North Spanish teacher Denise Cremin about some of the union’s demands. “We don’t want to be here. We want to be in our classrooms. This is a last resort,” she said. “Our schools have been chronically underfunded.”
