I’m SO proud to have just launched a newsletter for our amazing women’s charity

This is a nasty piece of reporting: prisoners who are low-risk, in open prisons and near the end of their sentences get day release and do work to rehabilitate. It’s common and reduces reoffending. Goggling at them and implying they are scary isn’t going to help, is it?
So telling that movie star, BAFTA winner, UN ambassador, Brown and Oxbridge graduate Emma Watson says she felt a pressure over not having a partner and a baby by 30
It is so rare to see someone challenging - really challenging - someone powerful, live, about such allegations that it's startling to watch this. Good one John Oliver.
Confusion in
@BuzzFeedUK
about if it's really snowing or if its
#fakesnow
from machines in Oxford Circus shops. Rest assured we will report nothing without investigating and also asking Olly Murs.
Just in case you didn’t know, the BBC’s rules of impartiality apply only when you start working for the BBC. Anything said before that isn’t relevant. That has to be the case: people have opinions, they are engaged in politics... you can’t hire someone who’s never had an opinion.
@PatrickStrud
After a six-week trial and a two-year police investigation, Daryll Jack Thomas Rowe, 27, today became the first man in Britain to be found guilty of intentionally infecting others with HIV.
A court order has been lifted meaning the man who murdered Grace Millane can now be named.
Jesse Kempson killed her while she was backpacking in New Zealand.
He’s now been convicted of sex attacks on two more women.
Agree with the many people I’ve seen pointing out that we are focusing today on what Trump says about May and Brexit, but history will look back on what he’s saying about Sadiq Khan - dangerous (and illogical) to blame a single politician for terror attacks

Welcome news for many pregnant women and their partners in England: new NHS guidelines make clear someone should have a partner 'at all times' for scans, baby loss, and from arrival at hospital
BBC News at 10 really doing what the BBC does best: dignified, sombre but at the same time comforting. Lots of metaphors from correspondents about continuity and closure. Feels like holding the viewer’s hand and leading them gently through a haze of grief and shock.
New job news: I’m thrilled to be joining
@bbcnewsbeat
as a senior journalist next week, commissioning stories for young people across radio, online, video and social. Can’t wait to start with
@deb_ramz
and the team.
*Call for feature pitches* I commission long, quality features for
@BusinessInsider
: striking narratives from anywhere in the world. I’m back to work on 4th and there is nothing I’d like more than some fresh ideas to look at. Pitching guidelines are here:
Johnny Depp has lost his libel case against The Sun - it's a complicated story, but what it means is that a judge ruled an article claiming Depp assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard was "substantially true" so Depp failed in suing the newspaper over it
Powerful quotes from MP
@jessphillips
who tells
@BuzzFeedNews
the criminal justice system is failing to "remember that women exist" by not offering sanitary protection to women in custody: "That is a sort of shaming, terrible shaming."
#dignityforall
I’m incredibly late to this, but
#Staged
with David Tennant and Michael Sheen is an absolute lockdown treat. Haven’t seen any other Zoom-based show work so well.
We're in the
@BuzzFeedUK
office which is close to Oxford Circus. We can hear sirens and saw people running and sheltering in shops. It's not clear what has happened - police and British Transport Police are attending. Please don't retweet rumours, it doesn't help anyone.
"I was made to feel embarrassed by something that is actually natural. I felt ashamed,” a woman who had to bleed onto her clothes while waiting for sanitary products in a police cell told

Personal news: I’m thrilled to be joining
@ThisIsInsider
(More specifically
@BusinessInsider
) next month as Senior Editor, running features, special projects and investigations from the UK Business team.
FREELANCERS! I am looking for feature and longform pitches for
@BusinessInsider
from writers around the world, especially those with a few years’ experience or more. Here’s the lowdown: (🧵)
It’s always great to discuss mental health in the media - but even so, please remember tomorrow that Blue Monday is not a real thing, it’s a pseudoscience PR campaign that was created for Sky Travel. So journos, at least debunk it if you are covering it!
@criminographer
Your posts are without fail the ones that stop me on Twitter and make me reflect on life and my own young children, Emily. Thank you for sharing this and I hope that helps you. He is beautiful.
Lawyers told
@BuzzFeedNews
the way women who have their periods in police custody are treated in the UK is in breach of the Human Rights Act
#dignityforall
Unions are booming in the US - they've not been this popular since the 60s. But the ordinary people driving them have their work cut out.
Thrilled to share this important read from
@abby_wallace3
, telling the human stories behind the headlines this year.
🚨Personal news: fellow journos, please share 🚨
After nearly 2 years as
@BusinessInsider
’s first features editor outside of the US, I’m a casualty of its recent layoffs and looking for my next move. There's lots about me at my website here:
Here’s that job news. I’m slightly giddy to say I’ve joined
@the_female_lead
as Editorial Director.
It’s a brilliant charity with 8.4 million followers across social media, founded by inspiring data entrepreneur
@edwina_dunn
(of Tesco Clubcard fame). 🧵
Lots of you are very kindly sending me jobs and asking how I am doing after my role was made redundant at Business Insider. Thank you. I have exciting news to share in a few weeks!
I’ve seen people tweeting that it’s a shame the statue in Bristol wasn’t removed by the council or a similar body before now - interesting to see having Googled that
@ThangamMP
called for its removal a few years ago:
This is the kind of paper suit that women have been made to wear, without underwear, when they have their periods in police custody. Read

I gave birth 3 weeks ago and have been in isolation most of the time since (Covid case in our house, isolating for 2 more test results). So how great to be out for this. Here’s my other son - the pandemic has lasted half his life but it’s a reminder there’s still wonder out there
A woman on her period was left in a paper suit with no underwear in a police cell, meaning dignity is being "compromised" and police need to find better ways of respecting women while keeping them safe,
@CustodyVisiting
says:
#dignityforall
As you'd imagine, I've got replies to this story saying "but these women are criminals so who cares". Aside from the fact that criminals have rights, people in police custody are not necessarily criminals. They have been arrested, not charged or convicted
Finished the final series of
#Staged
last night - such funny and clever TV. Almost ate itself with the very meta storyline but the final episode was a blinder, and very sad somehow. Who knew saying goodbye to the cocoon of lockdown would be wrenching.
Love that the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie official was scathing of Boris Johnson on
#r4today
despite Boris supposedly trying to get the pies a good trade deal: “We’ll the Amazon is burning... but good for him”
I have a very exciting new role at
@thisisinsider
on Edith’s new team, commissioning across the whole company and freelancers too. More on how to pitch me soon.
Very excited to be joining Insider's masthead as Features Editor and to welcome
@TekendraParmar
and
@LouiseRidley
to the team. We'll be working with reporters across Insider's newsroom and regularly assigning freelance writers and photographers
This is cool: Former BBC China Editor
@BBCCarrie
is donating her backdated pay from the BBC to
@fawcettsociety
to set up a fund for women who need legal advice on equal pay claims
Worth reading this if you’re a journalist, even if you have before. Suicide is one of the most important things to report thoughtfully. “Research consistently demonstrates strong links between certain types of media coverage and increases in suicide rates”
Important to remember here that this was a media law case - Depp was suing The Sun for libel, meaning he was saying the newspaper published something that wasn't true about him that damaged his reputation (the judge didn't agree). Depp wasn't in court accused of assaulting Heard.
🚨 News from me, fellow journalists please share: I'm hunting for a new editing role for after maternity leave. I've got 13 years' experience, most recently editing digital features, projects and longreads aimed at young people, at places like
@HuffPostUK
@BBCNewsbeat
@BuzzFeedUK
Marked restrictions easing in England by taking my baby to a socially distanced baby class which - as you can imagine after essentially living at home seeing only a few people for his whole life - blew his mind
Insider just won its first Pulitzer, making it one of the few digital-only news companies to do this. Proud to be part of such an exciting place that's growing in terms of work and staff 🥳
📰 Personal news time: I'm off on maternity leave from the wonderful
@bbcnewsbeat
- and leaving altogether at the end of the year as my contract will end then.
Joyful news unexpectedly: my hospital just emailed to say my partner can come to our final baby scan in December and during all of induction and labour (...assuming nothing changes by then...) He hasn’t been able to come to the first two.
⚡ BIG news from us at
@HuffPostUK
: next week we're moving our whole team to Birmingham for an open newsroom and a radical listening project. Have been so proud to work on this and can't wait to see it come to life
#HuffPostListens
Hamza was the son of the Al Jazeera bureau chief. Four other members of his (Wael al-Dahdouh's) family were also killed in October.
His wife Amna, his grandchild Adam, his 15-year-old son Mahmoud and seven-year-old daughter Sham all died in an Israeli strike.
We could learn a lot from babies - leaving the house and seeing leaves and the sky is apparently the most exciting thing EVER. Am rediscovering the world through new eyes 💙
He was the one doing the accusing, saying The Sun libeled him. And Heard, although she got lots of media attention, wasn't part of this case as such - it was Depp vs The Sun.
This is wonderful: women sharing pics with
@janegarvey1
@BBCWomansHour
of themselves after birth. Not everyone gets Kate's blow dry and red carpet treatment... but everyone is a hero after creating another human!
Here you are
@janegarvey1
Not quite Jenny Packham and the Lindo Wing; more sack dress and lino floor with me and my little boy traumatised after 40 hour labour and emergency caesarean - now where’s my lippy, designer dress and hair stylist?
@BBCWomansHour
I know that lots of good stuff will be done in its name and that’s wonderful, but it is still a form of misinformation and “fake news”, and that should be acknowledged even when it’s something positive!
"You cannot unfortunately take your own risk, you are taking a risk on behalf of everybody else": well pointed-out by Whitty that he says people can't choose to take their own risks and ignore rules, because eventually this will affect someone who is vulnerable.
Amazing scenes on
#r4Today
discussing cats who visit people other than their owners:
Sarah Smith: “I’ve had cats visit me and I’ve always flattered myself that it’s because they enjoy the attention they’re getting”
Cat expert: “I think they’re just exploiting you to be honest”
As
@CCriadoPerez
writes in her great book
#InvisibleWomen
- social scientists have long said that humans are murderous because humans kill lots of their own species. But is it humans who are murderous... or men? To talk about violence without gender is ridiculous.
1/ Personal news (again): Excited to say that I'll soon be back at
@huffpostuk
, running some ambitious special projects with the news team and
@pollycurtis
over the next few months - watch this space.
