Tomorrow I'm re-opening for submissions 🎉 (and for the first week of each month going forward) HOWEVER, us all getting COVID this summer and my daughter having an unexpected two days in hospital at the start of August has meant that I still have around 100 submissions to get
I've just taken on the most brilliant book (and author). He's not on social media so I can't loop him in, but it's a deeply Welsh literary 'folk horror', set in the Welsh valleys. It focuses on an older couple, together 50 years and the last in a long, long line of farmers
So, guys, this won't mean much to most of you on here, but my 20 month old daughter slept through the night for the 1st time last night and I have woken up feeling like a new woman! 💪🤸💃🏃🏼♀️😀
Authors, this story may reassure you about how subjective the publishing industry is: last week I concluded an auction for one of my authors (my first deal since returning to agenting!). The author told me that he'd forgotten to tell one agent that he now has agent rep 1/2
It's a Monday, which feels as good a time as any to announce that from September I'll be retraining as a Primary School Teacher! Time away from publishing since giving-up my job as a literary agent at the end of last year has caused me to ask some big questions about where I want
I'm open again for submissions! Check out guidelines on the Hannah Sheppard agency website. Especially keen to see submissions in the following areas:
- Literary fiction
- Book-club fiction by Irish writers
- Cosy crime
- Cosy fantasy
- Gothic novels
- Dark academia
Putting this out there because it's always worth repeating: at the moment, I am particularly looking for historical fiction, literary fiction, crime and thrillers and an epic love story. Please retweet.
I have opened for submissions! Crime/thrillers, literary and book club fiction, women's fiction, historical fiction. I'm still after a time-travel story and love anything with a hint of magic that isn't epic or urban fantasy.
Last week, this agent got back to him with a pass and told him his book wasn't going to sell* (these are his words)! [*I would never say this to an author]
Welcome to Twitter, baby Flynn Alexander! Arrived last week, slightly ahead of schedule. Enjoying dressing him in these dungarees, which were too small for his (big!) sister.
A THREAD. I have some sad news: I am leaving agenting (and Publishing) next month. Unfortunately, my son's health problems over the last 19 months have taken a huge toll on me, both physically and mentally. For much of this year I've been unable to work, and instead spent my time
Guys, have you seen that I have re-opened for submissions? Would particularly love to find a riveting crime novel, an epic love story or immersive historical fiction novel. Pls retweet.
So, writers of Twitter, I will be opening for submissions for a TWO WEEK PERIOD ONLY on 5th August. Make a note. Tell your friends. I am especially keen to see some crime fiction, historical fiction, and literary fiction.

Agents don't often talk about this, but I imagine I'm not alone in this: I go through periods of reading fatigue. I find I can just about spare the time for client manuscripts and submissions but my personal reading goes out the door and I switch to listening to music.
I am about to launch an online course on submitting a novel to literary agents! 🎉📚📝I am looking for 10 people who could send me some feedback on the course by the weekend (in exchange for having access to it for free). Please comment below and I'll send you a DM. UK-only.
My feed is awash with people worried and nervous about submitting to literary agents as a result of a couple of things that have been shown on this site in recent days. I want to say that the vast majority of literary agents are kind and upstanding and thoroughly professional
I'm doing another
#askagent
today whilst I go through submissions. Ask me your questions on query letters, synopses, how to hook an agent, publishing, etc! I'll be here on-and-off until 3pm 👀
To counteract the depressing news at the moment I've decided to offer something positive: I am offering FREE feedback on a query letter by someone who is BAME or disabled. For a chance of securing this, comment on this tweet by midnight (GMT) and I'll pick a winner tomorrow!
For anyone in UK publishing, you MUST stream Younger. It's set in publishing! And is actually slightly realistic 😂. Lots of famous books parodied, too. Currently watching the episode that features 'P is for Penguin' (H is for Hawk...). Also funny, relatable, etc...
Nothing like your daughter entering into sepsis and hypothermia to make you realise just how much the NHS is on its knees. No ambulances to take her to hospital when we rang 999 and a 5 hour wait in A&E to be seen. Thankfully, she is recovering now, but what a

I have 15 submissions left to go through over the weekend and then I will have responded to all 800 of the submissions I received between January and April 🎉. Excited to be re-opening shortly but also now have ten full manuscripts to get through! Gulp.
I am now 95% of the way through my submissions! If you're still waiting, expect to hear back by the end of next week.

This January is even bleaker than usual and so I've decided to slash the price of my online course HOW TO SUBMIT TO A LITERARY AGENT by 50% for the whole of January. It's now a total bargain at just £18! Here is a link to it:
Now is probably the time to admit to Twitter that I am pregnant and a few weeks away from having baby

Wkd blue. I was 15 and drank 11 (!) bottles at my friend's birthday party then cried to her mum about how I was the only one still in the Never Been Kissed Club. 3 weeks later I went on holiday with the same friend and her family & snogged the lifeguard at Centre Parks.
On a more positive note, my toddler has taken to climbing up on my knee and saying 'Cuddle? Yes. Okay' as he nestles in deeply. A minute later he sometimes says 'ahh, cosy' and it's just so cute.
Announcement: I'm closing for submissions at the end of the month and will be taking August to catch-up on them. Then, from 1st September I'll be open to them for the first week of every month.
Guys, take note. I have RE-OPENED FOR SUBMISSIONS!! 📚📚am especially looking for women's fiction, historical fiction, literary fiction, crime & non-fiction focusing on parenthood or the female experience. Also really welcome diverse voices.

I had a doctor's appointment this morning.
Doctor: so what do you do?
Me: err, I'm a literary agent
Doctor: oh really? I've written a book! *Pitches book*
I admire his courage, but it was neither the time nor the place...

This has been said before but it bears repeating: when submitting to agents please DON'T address your query letter to any of the following - Dear Sirs, Dear Madam, Dear Editor, Dear Publisher, Dear Agent, or no address at all. The best approach is Dear [Agent's name].

My online course How to Submit to a Literary Agent is now live! It is super helpful for anyone still honing their submission documents or looking to troubleshoot after many rejections. Plus, there are options for personalised feedback on your submission!
Today has been pretty rubbish. But this afternoon we've watched 10 Things I Hate About You and I'm feeling all the feels 🥰. I loved this film so much as a teenager and I still love it now, it's so witty, smart, warming and well-acted. Plus, Shakespeare!
Thank you everyone for your kind and supportive messages, they have meant a lot ❤️. For anyone wanting to know, here is a link to my online course How to Submit to a Literary Agent:

Watching Wicked Little Letters on Netflix and it is EXCELLENT! I've snort-laughed a lot. But it's also just different to anything else I've seen recently. Plus, Olivia Coleman is amazing at everything she turns her hand to
I often practice my pitch to editors whilst in the shower (any other agents do this?!). My 3yo walked in the other day and asked who I was talking to 😂

Would anyone like feedback on their query letter or synopsis over the next couple of weeks? I'm not doing big editorial projects but have some space for small pieces of feedback. Send me a DM if so!
If anyone is in any doubt about the value of having a literary agent, I have spent the equivalent of an entire working day outlining and clarifying terms to be improved on in a particular publishing contract. My eyes are now hurting 😎

3yo has suddenly discovered the word why. We've had 'why are there germs in rubbish?', 'why do trees lose their leaves?' and 'why do we have a compost bin?'. I'm finding the endless questions cute right now but we're only on day 1. Day 20 I may have a different answer!

For reasons too lengthy to explain, I am currently sitting in the dark, in our lounge, whilst our baby sleeps in here and my husband tries to console our hysterical, hot and ill two-year-old in our bedroom. This is not how I envisaged spending my birthday evening 😂

Husband and I thought that nursery was shut for all of next week. But it turns out they are open on Monday & Tuesday. We're not working which means two days to ourselves sans-kids! 🎉 Truly feels like a Christmas present in this year when we're spending the whole break at home 😂
industry and it has meant a lot to me. I'm sure this won't be the last you'll hear from me. If anything, I like the free books too much so will continue to hang around for those 😜. Farewell, amigos! x
Is anyone looking for constructive editorial feedback on their adult/YA novel or submission package? I have some time to take on additional projects between the last week of June and the start of August, so get in touch 🙂
One of the nice things about leaving my job as a literary agent is that reading is no longer something I *have* to do and therefore I enjoy it more. Two small children and Covid are putting paid to most of my reading time, but still - I'm trying to appreciate the small things.
So today I came up with a life hack for surviving lockdown with a baby/toddler. If having a meeting: cut an apple up into a zillion pieces, pop the baby in the highchair and watch as they spend 20 minutes picking up tiny pieces of apple. You're welcome.
Who has a question about query letters to agents that they'd like answering? I'm compiling questions for something, but also I will try to answer them here, too.
Saw my 5yo's class assembly today. He grinned and waved at us throughout the entire assembly! I'll be sad when this phase is over - he's just so enthusiastic! He runs into my arms at every pick-up shouting 'mummy!'
Spare a thought for those of us with children... If we're holed up at some point (feels inevitable...) we definitely won't be spending our 'free time' reading and writing 😂😂
Something I've been ruminating on recently as an editor (whilst I am still editing!) is the importance of creating an emotive reading experience whilst writing. I use the word 'feel' in my editorial notes a lot because I am an intuitive editor, but also because I want the author
I've just had to write 1,000 words for something and I take my hat off to you, authors, because it is tiring work! I'm now going to stare out of the window for five minutes.... 😅
@hannahfearn
Absolutely not the only person! 🙋🏼♀️ In fact, I'd even go as far as suggesting that those couples who need to prove their love/gifts on social media might not all be happily married...
My son is now 90% problem-free but I need time to heal and my authors deserve an agent who can give them the time and energy they deserve and I simply can't do that. Also, due to the nature of the business, because I only work on commission, and have been unable to take on
I have to say that whilst I love being a literary agent, the day-to-day job can be full of such highs and lows: one minute you're passing on glowing reviews & sales news & then half an hour later you are passing on the 3rd rejection to an author in as many days😕
Husband and I have spent the day stripping the wallpaper in our lounge and have uncovered a fabulous piece of graffiti on the wall that reads 'Get Your T**s Out'...
Sometimes social media can make authors feel that if they don't secure an agent or publishing deal instantly, they are failing or will never be published. But I think the bald facts are heartening - it can take a long time! But you'll get there in the end.

Update: baby can now say 'cake'.
We asked him if he wanted a snack and he pointed to a box of cakes that had arrived and shouted cake! 🤣 My daughter couldn't say this word until she was two.
The sleepless nights are mostly over for us now but 5 year old woke me up three times last night with a sore throat. Guess who left the house at 7am and is spending the entire day in London at the Festival of Writing today 🙋🏼♀️ 😴🤪
I'm just going to leave this here!😃 Second week at Number 1 for

Readers, I need your help. Can you recommend me books which have a narcissist as the main character - or one of the POVs? I have a couple of examples on my list from my own reading, but I'd like more. Thanks.
Tomorrow I will be travelling back after 10 days with my family & my in-laws & a toddler who is definitely asserting her independence and honestly I cannot wait to just lounge on the sofa on NYE and do NOTHING. So let's all raise an early glass... to doing nothing! 🎉🥂
Writers, are there any books on editing your novel that you really rate? I'm looking to provide some further reading suggestions for those I'm editing.

Editors, tell me your thoughts! August is usually a dead month with everyone on holiday, and looking after kids, but with Covid turning our working lives upside down, are you still keen to receive submissions this month? Debating on the best time to send something out.
My four-year-old attends a musical theatre group on Thursday mornings and is learning the song Do Re Mi. Every day we come home and she wants to practice the song with me whilst watching it on TV. Guys, it's bringing me so much joy to be singing each week with her 🥰
Took the three year old to a new playgroup this morning and she spent the whole time telling me she wanted to go home. Now we're home and she's telling me she wants to go to the playgroup 😐😐😐🙄🤷
