Since the Ferguson Uprising, the number of people murdered by the police has not budged. Despite the de-escalation trainings, procedural changes, body cameras, and other reforms, the number of killings actually increased in 2019
Angela Davis was acquitted because there was an international movement to free her. She’s a queer black feminist—no conspiracy there. Having done extensive research in her archives I can say with confidence that this thread is *completely* spurious & prob from the FBI!!
it's truly astonishing how many people are being sacrifice at the altar of capitalism right now. they want us to become inured to the deaths... it's disgusting.
I hope you’ll spend time on the
#8ToAbolition
site tonight. So thorough. Read the fine print & you’ll even find things like: ”End the use of property taxes to determine school funding.” We need to chip away at the carceral state from all sides.
If u donate to a police/prison abolitionist project or bail fund I'll send u a PDF of my book Carceral Capitalism. Just send a screenshot of yr receipt to lonenerry

i dont have a hot take on cancel culture. as an abolitionist im against a culture of punishment but i think a lot of what mollycoddle boomers call punitive isnt. re: free speech debates—liberalism does not have an adequate theory of power which is why i dont identify as a liberal
The irony of “anti-imperialists” defending Putin’s war, a war that is *explicitly* a revanchist imperial war, has not been lost on me. We don’t have to guess what Putin’s motives are in invading Ukraine because he published his thoughts on the topic last summer...

Since March the Fed has spent $2.9 trillion—$22,000 per household! The money went to big business bc the technocrats continue to push a false theory that relief will trickle down. It hasn’t. Meanwhile, tens of millions of people are unemployed.
I swear there are cops on twitter pretending to be abolitionists! Beware of new accounts with few followers trying to sow discord by pitting abolitionists against each other
My uncle died from COVID-19 and I lost communication with my brother in prison. At least 1 guard at the prison has tested positive but there’s been almost no testing of prisoners... I have this sinking feeling that “back to normal” is going to be really different, prob not better

the ppl of Minneapolis: dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department!
i'm glad the people have out-maneuvered the celebrity activists who want to manage them
I’m officially an Assistant Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity at USC. Life changes so quickly. I’m nervous about this new chapter, excited to join the ASE fam, & overwhelmed by the warmth of the USC faculty and grad students who reached out to me. 1/6
Are we turning a corner or what??

on why making the police unnecessary by investing in communities *not* reform is the only path forward.
Opinion: Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police - NYTimes
I'm currently in the process of planning 2 undergrad seminars that meet twice a week: Carceral Technologies and Critical Theories of Race. Do you think assigning 2-3 chapters/articles per class is a fair amount? Any pedagogy or online teaching tips?
Dear friends, I’m not on Twitter (X??) much these days, but I just wanted to let you know about a book I have coming out with
@SemiotextePress
on Tuesday titled ALIEN DAUGHTERS WALK INTO THE SUN: AN ALMANAC OF EXTREME GIRLHOOD—the culmination of 15 years of work.
Abolish the police. Defund. Defeat. Disarm. Dont waste your time on

—reformist reforms that have a track record of failure. These symbolic gestures are designed to siphon off the energy generated by the struggle to end the antiblack racism that’s at the core of policing

is based on faulty data science and harmful. None of the statistics are credible. It’s likely to serve as an out for leaders looking to avoid transformative change. Read more here by me and

White suburbs are also extractive/parasitic in that residents hoard resources for class reproduction while offloading, onto poor people, the cost of dealing w the negative “externalities” of capitalism & paying for public infrastructure/goods. Exclusion + hoarding is their logic
Child of the suburbs here. It was full of violence, private security firms, and armed police. We’re not trying to replicate the suburbs. The suburbs are carceral spaces. The suburbs are not abolition.
Amazon profits from policing, has helped build the surveillance state, helps ICE terrorize migrants & hands over customer data to cops—not to mention their foul labor practices (wrist trackers on warehouse workers). Dont b fooled by the capitalist co-optation of

“It is difficult to explain why we haven’t seen significant fluctuations in the shootings from year to year,” former Charlotte police chief Darrel Stephens said. “There’s been significant investments that have been made in de-escalation training. There’s been a lot of work.”
If I successfully defend my dissertation over zoom on Monday I get to eat this milk cookie... the last treat in my food stockpile. Look how disciplined I’ve been. This is cookie has been sitting on my shelf for weeks.
It is telling how easy it is for the federal government to mobilize resources for anti-black repression & bailing out Wall St while they have failed egregiously to do anything about the pandemic and mass unemployment...

When they say “sexual addiction” what they really mean is white male psycho-sexual fantasies of dominating Asian women. People make jokes about “yellow fever” but it’s disturbing how quickly fetish can turn to murderous aggression
Mostly off social media but wanted to pop in to express my gratitude for the work of the people we’ve been engaging with this semester in my graduate Carceral Studies seminar. I've learned so much from my students too <3
We’ve passed the grim milestone of 500,000 COVID deaths in the US. The life expectancy for black men declined by 3 years in 2020. As I reflect on the family/loved ones who have died from COVID, suicide & drugs I am reminded that...
W. G. Sebald on the relationship between the history of art and the history of sugar. The accumulation of artistic masterpieces as racial capitalism...
So. Tomorrow morning I will be on the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Jane Pauley reading and discussing quarantine dreams and poetry. There may be harp too. It will be my first time on TV. Strange, all it took was a global pandemic to reignite humans‘ interest in dreams.
Last texts from Lauren Berlant, last fall. They were brilliant, yes, but incredibly generous with their time & energy, even before I was in grad school.
The world lost a giant.
"New York City spends more on policing than it does on the Departments of Health, Homeless Services, Housing Preservation and Development, and Youth and Community Development combined." The NYPD has a $6 billon budget
17 million fewer people will get stimulus checks under Biden than under Trump. Are the Dems on a suicide mission or what??? Caving on the $15 minimum wage + shrinking the checks =unfathomable stupidity.
Rest in power Brother Boko, founding member of the Houston Texas Chapter of the Black Panther Party, artist/muralist, and propagator of cosmic consciousness. I met Boko when we were both living in New Mexico.
“In the past 4 decades the cost of policing in the US has tripled and is now $115bn. In most cities, spending on police is significantly greater than spending on services and other departments.” For example, $1.8bn goes to the LAPD, more than half of Los Angeles’ general fund
Another thing needs to be cleared up: the US is not the primary protagonist in the Russia-Ukraine war. So I’ve put together a thread on China + Russia + Ukraine from the perspective of political economy and geopolitics

This is a long way of saying, my heart breaks for the Ukrainians.
How many civilians will be killed by cluster bombs and thermobaric vacuum bombs?
Everyone loses in war.

Twitter PSA—as someone who studies predatory finance I’ve been admiringly following the career of Warren for years. But with how the primaries have played out a vote for Warren basically amounts to a vote for Biden. I urge Warren supporters to seriously consider voting for Bernie

All power to the “millennial leftist”!

At this point all I can say is that Harvard doesn’t deserve Cornel West. He was a true comrade during my time in grad school, going out of his way to support the grad student union and prison divestment campaign.
I’m sending my love & support to everyone who is revolting in the streets right now. I’ve recently been blindsided by the suicide of some I had an intense relationship with so I won’t be on here much...
His war is an irredentist war, no matter how desperately the tankie left tries to spin it. What Putin ultimately desires is for the boundaries of Russia to be as they existed prior to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. He seeks to restore the Empire of tsarist (not Soviet) Russia

Israel must be stopped from annexing parts of the West Bank. We are days away from the commencement of Israel’s illegal land grab...and the international community does nothing

Still can’t stop watching the Ocasio-Cortez video it’s 173849281 times better than the video of Richard Spencer getting punched & I liked that video A LOT. I hope all the old guard Dems get trashed & we get full communism & the abolition of ICE + the whole damn carceral apparatus

The cover of Carceral Capitalism will be metallic black pantone color with a little dark blue in it👌 Inside cover image: four women escape from prison. Rovigo, Italy, 1981.
The book is going to print! Getting it ready has been so time consuming, gosh.
Holy crap!! The first copies of Carceral Capitalism have arrived. Harvard/Boston people: come see me present my book on Feb 13, Robinson Hall (Harvard), Lower Library, 4-6pm! You can buy a copy of the book through the Warren Center

For every homeless person in the US there are two empty investor-owned properties. This is why housing should not be a commodity. Financial speculation in the real estate market has created a global crisis that undermines the social function of housing
this society does not give a damn about the lives of vulnerable people. Maybe it can all be boiled down to the the peculiarity of American individualism—the inability to think beyond the unit of the individual, even in some corners of the left...
Absolute fucking madness. Pharmaceutical lobbyists are fighting tooth & nail to block a temporary vaccine patent waiver because...China & Russia might use mRNA tech to cure cancer?? You’ve got to be kidding me. These goons are holding the world hostage.
Thank you
@waazn1
for writing this thoughtful response to Carceral Capitalism, and for creating space for me to discuss transnational resistance to carceral states, e-carceration & more 🔥
The movement to end cash bail should also include the scaling back/abolition of:
-pre-trial detention
-risk assessment
-pre-trial monitoring by the state & companies
Bail reforms that don’t challenge these issues can actually expand the carceral state
Are the queers and libertarians who opine about the right to risk one’s life & the perils of quarantine biopolitics slyly reproducing the farce of separability as a mode of thinking?? (“Agamben is a liberal”—Fred Moten). It bugs me. It’s not *your* life—it’s everyone’s life.
Dream:
I went to the doctor to get a prescription for Marx's Capital, then brought it to a pharmacist who was a cashier at 7-11.
He asked, Is this for Vol 1 or Vol 2?
Vol 1, I replied.
He gave me a print-out of the book, plus some pills to understand it.
I took the medicine.
The restoration of Pell grants for prisoners is huge news. The 1994 crime bill's ban devastated prison education programs. I'll never forgive Bill Clinton (and Biden) for it.
Pell grants put me through college. Prisoners deserve access to them too
“Millions of people received their stimulus payments from the federal govt this week but some are at risk of immediately losing the money if they owe credit card, medical or private student loan debts.”
Oh so the stimulus checks are a bailout for creditors
In short, Putin does not think the Ukrainians are a real people, nor does he believe that Ukraine is a real country. He believes the territory of Ukraine belongs to Russia and resents the country’s westward drift.

Senate passes $740 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in an 84-13 vote. And yet there’s still no fucking stimulus bill, with renters $70 billion behind on rent payments and 30 to 40 million people on the brink of houselessness. Sharpen your pitchforks y’all
Tho I would certainly relish in the libidinal enjoyment of watching Kamala Harris verbally castrate Trump, I cant bring myself to support a prosecutor. Sry friends. ACAB includes prosecutors
I was gonna tweet that electoral politics is mostly a sham bc it’s based on a false theory of political power. Nonetheless I voted for
@SenSanders
in the primary. Boots said everything I was gonna say.
Mostly I’m voting for Bernie bc our healthcare system is structural ableism.
I have never voted for a candidate in my life.
But I will be voting for Bernie Sanders in the democratic primary and the general election. If I’m doing that, there are probably tens of millions in that same position.
Let me explain why I’m doing this now:
A Joe Biden op-ed: "I’m proposing an additional $300 million to reinvigorate community policing in our country. Every single police department should have the money they need to institute real reforms"
When people organize for Medicare for all, investment in education, housing, etc we always hear “there’s no money.”
Apparently there is infinite money for propping up Wall St and inflating asset prices so that the rich can get richer.
I like “the FBI absconded with my dissertation” better than “my dog ate it” — but seriously...sux that the FBI took Angela Davis’s Kant dissertation... they should give it back. They prob don’t even understand Kant anyway

But what about NATO?
As a lifelong anti-interventionist, I have always been anti-NATO.
No doubt, unipolarity, with the US at the helm, has been terrible for the world. NATO has been an instrument of US hegemony.

Let’s be honest. My generation will not have social security or Medicare. The collapse of the tax state & rise of the debt state fosters parasitic governance. When the bill comes, it’s always paid by looting the poor to transfer wealth to the richest
