As 2020 comes to a close, I wanted to share my annual lists of favorites. I’ll start by sharing my favorite books this year, deliberately omitting what I think is a pretty good book – A Promised Land – by a certain 44th president. I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did.
Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow is an esteemed member of Philadelphia's literary community and an acclaimed children's book author. Her books are favorites in my household. Please RT to spread the word. This happens too much.
‼️ "A brilliant, riveting fox-trap of a novel — an epic mystery, a family saga and a survival guide.” (Miranda Cowley Heller) ‼️

RETURNS with the immersive, propulsive THE GOD OF THE WOODS! Coming June 11 -- mark your calendars now:
Amanda Seyfried is returning to TV after winning the Emmy for "The Dropout" and will star in Peacock's "Long Bright River," a limited series adaptation of the Liz Moore novel.
My next novel, Long Bright River, was acquired in March 2018. Almost two years ago. It takes a loooong time for a book to be published. But guess what? 1/7/20 is five days away...finally. Here's my tour schedule. I'd love to see you. (Here for UK: )
It is true: Long Bright River is sold out a lot of places, including Amazon. (Thanks Obama!) (But literally!) Best suggestion: phone your local indies to see if they've got any in stock for curbside pickup. Also,
@target
has signed Target Book Club editions in store and online.
So, I started reading Long Bright River by
#Framingham
High grad (and president of the Model Congress team I advised!) Liz Moore last night and couldn't put it down. Stayed up way too late and got about 150 pages in and can't wait to get back at it tonight.
🎉✨ Happy pub day to

In the past few days: a sudden increase in anxiety about completely trivial things. I feel as if the iceberg of anxiety I had dedicated exclusively to the previous administration has suddenly been dislodged and is now free-floating in my bloodstream, seeking a host. Anyone else?!

I read this book before Christmas and finished it in two days. It is UNBELIEVABLY good. A story of children missing in the wilderness, told by characters across different timelines. It is a masterclass in plot and character. THE GOD OF THE WOODS by
@LizMooreBooks
out this summer.
I read Russell Banks's Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter as a teenager; they had a profound impact on me as a writer. Later, I was lucky enough to be Russell's research assistant through a program my grad school offered. (1)
Really looking forward to this one (1/14, 7:30pm): Philly launch of Long Bright River at the central branch of the

The Unseen World was a bit of a niche book for me. Fewer people read it than my other novels. But it is absolutely wild that that novel was used to train an AI....if you happened to be one of its 12 readers, you may recognize why.
Thanks to

My fam filmed this all over Philly one Sat near the beginning of the pandemic, when every day felt desperate with a baby, a 3 year old, two full-time jobs, and no child care. It was something to do. I didn't know we were actually making it for this moment.
He went out of his way to be kind. He wrote me an e-mail after reading a book of mine; in it, he called me "the real deal"--a phrase I sometimes fall back on when impostor syndrome sets in. (2)

@nneditore
today at 3pm EST:
Learning of his death today brought up so many emotions: sadness over the loss of a friend and mentor, of course. And also a specific kind of nostalgia for being a young writer meeting a hero. (3)
A hyperspecific thing that happens to writers is when another artistic entity comes out that is extremely similar to a book you have already published and suddenly you receive an onslaught of texts and posts saying hey have you seen this thing that is exactly like your thing? 🧵
A new short story of mine is in this issue (online now and in print this wknd) alongside the work of some of my favorite authors. “Clinical Notes” is the story of a baby with a fever. Incidentally, it’s probably the most nonfictional work I’ve ever published as fiction.
(2/2) And on a related note....we are thrilled to announce that
@kileyreid
will be joining the Temple MFA program as writer-in-residence for the next two academic years. Welcome, Kiley! We're so happy our students can learn from you.
