It's paperback publication day for
#InLittleStars
, my reimagining of Romeo & Juliet, set in West Yorkshire. It's got a 4.6 rating on Amazon, 4.53 on Good Reads & has moved many readers to tears. You can find it in indie bookshops, Waterstones or here
Today the UK has sent a message to the world that you can be sacked for lying (twice), be derided as unfit for office by your ex-boss, have used racist language multiple times, but as long as you went to Eton and Oxford, 0.3% of the population can make you our PM
#NotMyPM
I'm so concerned about the
#NHSCrisis
that I wrote to my MP Philip Davies asking him to urge the government to act, particularly on social care. I thought the voters of
#Bingley
#Saltaire
&
#Shipley
would like to read his response and I do hope they remember it at the next GE.
On a packed train, one of only 3 people wearing masks in carriage & guy breathing all over me says he doesn't need a mask because he has enough alcohol in his blood to zap any Covid germs. This is what happens when the PM scraps all safeguards & says we will rely on common sense.
Interesting that my two favourite novels this year, Lessons in Chemistry and A Terrible Kindness, are both by debut female authors over 55. It strikes me that we need more mature female voices in fiction and publishing would do well to understand that.
15 years ago, after receiving one of my 102 agent rejections for my 1st novel, I burst into tears in WHSmith, fearing I may never see my books there. Today, my 9th novel, The Last Thing She Told Me, has been announced as a

My son turned 18 last month. He couldn't get a 16-25 Railcard online because he doesn't have a passport/driving licence. Had to send his birth certificate to get one. But that Railcard won't be accepted as ID to vote. No accepted free ID for young people is voter suppression.
Worth celebrating the fact that Gwyneth Hughes, writer of the biggest tv drama for some time, is 70-years-old. The value of life experience of older women. ‘The timing was impeccable’: why it took a TV series to bring the Post Office scandal to light
@stellduffy
My son was first called 'gay' at school at eight-years-old. Which is why education about equality and respect and addressing the toxic masculinity which is rife in schools, has to begin even younger.
@JujuliaGrace
@marcuschown
I emailed my MP Philip Davies asking him to do just that. His reply was so appalling I tweeted it a couple of days ago. Thought you might like to see and share.
I'm grateful for the lovely responses to my news of a 3-book deal, but want to spare a thought for all the established authors currently without a book deal (as I was for a year). So here's a🧵because we need to talk about the lows as well as the highs.

@JayMitchinson
It didn't surprise me as his constituent but I do feel when the bar has sunk so low in public life that we're not surprised by lies and bile, it's important we still make it clear how unacceptable it is, ensure people know what they are voting for and demand better.
@RachelBWriter
No and I asked specifically about social care but no mention of that in the response. Worth remembering that according to him the NHS has nothing to do with the government next time ministers take credit for it.
@Anna_Mazz
This is the sort of story I miss most from my time as a regional newspaper reporter. The local magistrates' court was a constant source of the bizarre and the ridiculous.
@julesbuddle
I feel for all those, like you, who work in the NHS and have to see/listen to this rubbish while you're getting on with the business of treating patients. You deserve so much better.
Thank you to
@jessphillips
for her anger on behalf of the vulnerable and refusal to be cowed by the powerful. And for consistently proving wrong anyone who says, 'they're all as bad as each other'.
Quite striking that in 2019 the men we should warn girls/young women to avoid at all costs are the US President, the PM and a senior member of the royal family.
During a book signing yesterday, a woman read the blurb of my novel then put it down, saying, 'it sounds a bit too exciting for me'. So if anyone is writing a rather dull book, there is a reader out there waiting for it.
After our prosecution case against Boris Johnson was shutdown, I told you all I would find out what was happening behind the scenes.
Now I have.
Share it everywhere.
This is a public interest matter.
Lovely to receive this from
@Soc_of_Authors
. I joined when I began my 1st novel, since then 102 agent rejections, 11 published novels, 1.4 million books sold, 1 remortgaged house, currently ‘between publishers’. Join because a career as an author is a rollercoaster!
And to the man who wrote to berate me for having more scenes in my novel where women cried, than the number of times he has seen women cry in his 32 years, an apology. It was foolish of me to write a novel about women's pain and suffering without consulting a male expert.
Worth noting that the average age of authors in the top 10 mass market fiction list this week is approx 56 (based on 9 out of 10 - couldn't find age of 1). So if you're a 40+ writer starting out, please remember your best years are still to come!
Writing Christmas cards in the perimenopausal years is a constant process of sealing the envelope and trying desperately to remember who you need to address it to.
@LynseyJWrites
Yes, that and when Professor Umbridge took over Hogwarts. Meaning we need either a friendly warthog and meerkat or Neville Longbottom to save the day.
And how much better politics would be if there were more women from working class backgrounds and less men from Eton/Oxbridge/old boys networks. Up to us to vote the old guard out and the next generation of outstanding women in.
I hope this experience doesn’t put off a single person like me, with a background like mine from aspiring to participate in public life.
That would break my heart. 💔
We need more people in politics with backgrounds like mine - and fewer as a hobby to help their mates.

This is excellent from
@MarinaHyde
. Because it is not 'unbelievable'. It's women who aren't believed. And if they want someone to vet police officers, ask a woman. Any woman. Because we've been vetting men every day since we were girls, simply in order to survive.
Earlier this evening my husband mistakenly WhatsApped the head of PR at a company he freelances for (instead of me) to say 'tea is ready'. Fortunately, he messaged back, 'what we having?' 🤣
A message for fellow authors who didn't get stocked in supermarkets/WHSmith, make the 'books of the year' lists, bestseller lists, award longlists etc; too often we measure 'success' in the wrong ways. If you wrote a book that touched someone's heart, that is everything. Be proud
Thirty years ago, I was news editor of a paper in Birmingham. We covered poor housing, social deprivation and poverty but we didn't have food banks or warm banks. Poverty has got worse, far worse, particularly for those in work. So important we don't normalise it.
Poverty or extreme poverty in Britain is commonplace. That fact is shocking, yet we’re not shocked. That itself is part of the problem- it has become normalised. But it’s not normal. Our
@TheNewsAgents
report from my home-Northfield in Birmingham.
After watching
#HappyValleyFinale
it's worth reminding all TV execs/commissioning people that yes, you can write a brilliant three series show with a plain-speaking, normal-looking, fifty-something, northern female character at its heart and absolutely leading from the front.
The thing that set Happy Valley apart from other police dramas was that it was essentially about a mother's love for her daughter. Fitting that
#HappyValleyFinale
ended with that love still at its core. And yes - ALL the awards, including 'best kitchen scene ever'.
Just received an email from my bank asking me to complete a survey on how their telephone banking service did when I called. Thinking of replying with 'I am currently experiencing a higher than usual email volume. The current estimated waiting time for a response is 6 months.'
Can't think of a male political leader who would resign saying, 'no one individual should be dominant in any system for too long'. Nicola Sturgeon has, like Jacinda Ardern before her, resigned with humility & grace. The contrast with resignation speeches of last 2 UK PMs is stark
@jocotterillbook
@LaylaMoran
Yes, what a contrast! And so important we pick people up when they say 'they're all as bad' because it's patently not true!
About a year ago I came across a man on a train who inspired a character in the book I am writing. Today, when I've nearly finished it, I saw him again. The book is called The Second Time We Met and now I'm a bit freaked.
Beautifully staged and moving production of Reasons to Stay Alive
@LeedsPlayhouse
Wonderful to hear two men in the row in front (who didn't know each other) talking about their mental health issues. And to read these at the end. Thanks
@matthaig1
No author has a divine right to have their next book published. But good writers should be nurtured & valued. If publishers want to attract/retain more writers from working-class backgrounds (like me), they need to address the financial insecurity & below minimum wage incomes 6/8
It's that time of year when self-employed people chase salaried people asking to be paid before Christmas. If you're in a staff job, please ensure all invoices are paid before you get the paid holiday that freelances don't.
Particularly inspiring to hear so many young people and children speaking
@LeedsEurope
protest this evening. Have a listen to Eva speaking more sense than our PM
And a huge thanks to readers, whose loyalty & feedback to authors is invaluable, as is the support of bloggers & indie bookshops. I hope all those authors who fear they may be at the end of the line find a new track to allow them to continue bringing their books to readers. 8/8
I tweeted this on Sat. Was trolled & abused by anti-maskers who called me a 'bed-wetter'. 2 days ago I was pinged for a contact with someone who had Covid on this date. Have now tested positive. I wore my mask to protect others. Such a shame others didn't show same courtesy to me
On a packed train, one of only 3 people wearing masks in carriage & guy breathing all over me says he doesn't need a mask because he has enough alcohol in his blood to zap any Covid germs. This is what happens when the PM scraps all safeguards & says we will rely on common sense.
@Aiannucci
Important to tell young people to apply for postal vote (no photo ID needed) for this election, or voter authority certificate from local council. Long term, we fight it, vote them out and scrap the policy.
This is important. The media got Johnson into No 10 and kept him there. The ties are too close. Allegra Stratton and Rishi Sunak are godparents to each others children. Blair is godfather to one of Murdoch's children. That is not healthy for the media, politics or democracy.
The Government and the Press protect each other.
@BrianCathcart
blasts the culture of cronyism that exists between Downing Street and the right wing media.

Any mature, intelligent, compassionate government would look to see what other countries with much lower rates were doing differently. Unfortunately we don't have one of those governments.

@FranQuinnWriter
I had 10 full MS requests, 102 agent rejections and 1 agent who couldn't get me a publisher and let me go before I got my first book deal. 1.4m books sold now. Have the Ben & Jerry's and keep going!
Bank branch my parents have been with for 60 years is closing. Having to switch to only building soc left in town. But even that is done online, impossible without my help & hugely complicated without 'accepted ID'. Their generation have been robbed of their financial dignity.
In the meantime, we need to champion those authors without a book deal (thanks to those who supported me over a tough year) & publishers (esp new indie ones like Boldwood) who are investing in authors' long-term careers with multi-book deals providing more financial security. 7/8
The UK has the 4th highest Covid death rate per capita in the world. Yet the inquiry still hasn't started, we've had no apology from the government and they try to gaslight us by saying they got 'every major call right'.
Now that Covid is over (🤦♂️) let's look at how the High Income Countries have performed.
▪️Covid deaths
▪️Excess deaths
▪️Mortality rates
▪️Vaccination Rates
▪️Loss of freedoms
▪️Economy.
How did your country do?

So many people don't know that most authors only get 7.5% of the selling price of a paperback, while an ebook selling at 99p nets us 25p. And still we get asked to do events/work for free, 'for the promotion'

I once had a trainee reporter complain about being sent on a vox pop and suggesting I send 'someone more junior'. I pointed out that everyone else was an experienced senior reporter. He had gone to private school and Oxbridge (and became a pol ed for a broadsheet!)
At the end of my yoga class we did a little meditation where you had to think of something you want to let go of in 2024, write it on a piece of wood and throw it into a fire. I wrote 'The Tories', which isn't very zen but I can confirm it felt good.
@julie_cohen
Thanks for sharing and I'm sorry you went through that. Virtually every woman I know has had something similar happen to them (and often far worse). It is the fact that this is our normal which is so appalling. X
@davidmbarnett
I am totally there for this but would request Jemima leaves a trail of garlic bread for Matt to follow and rescue her at one point and that he should use a fishing net to do so.
Wouldn't it be good if we created an annual 'kind list' and lauded the people who topped that on the front pages of national newspapers, rather than a rich list.
To those who have commented that the characters in my Calder Valley-set novels should speak 'properly', hope you're enjoying the cracking dialogue in
#HappyValley
I'm no stranger to rejections. I had 102 of them from agents over 7 years before I got my 1st book deal. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to have 12 books published & have sold more than 1.5million copies. But that doesn't make you immune from further knock-backs. 2/8
Writers are only as secure as their last book sales, not the quality of the book, the sales - which are hugely impacted by publisher marketing spend & securing a slot in the big book shops/supermarkets (or a pub date days before lockdown!) - things which are out of our hands. 3/8
After 6 books, my sales had fallen. I got a 1-book deal on a low advance for my 7th & was advised it was make or break. I re-mortgaged our house & got a part-time job to afford to write it. It sold more than 400,000 copies & was in the top 5 bestsellers on Amazon that year. 5/8
So
@BBCNews
so obsessed with London that they arrived late for election victory speeches of Andy Burnham in Greater Manchester and Tracy Brabin in West Yorkshire. Almost as if voters in the north are an afterthought.
Should anyone need an alternative oath of allegiance today, may I respectfully suggest the Bagpuss one (courtesy of the legendary Oliver Postgate) we will be using. We have also installed a Bagpuss display in our front window to really confuse those attending the other event.
@davidmbarnett
All of us fifty-somethings now thinking we’re looking pretty good on it. Also why are ‘older people’ always portrayed carrying shopping bags? Do they think the over 50s can’t manage an online grocery shop?
Wondering when we are going to have the conversation about why we let the Church of England, which openly discriminates against homosexuals, run a quarter of our primary schools and one in 16 of our secondary schools.
Delighted to be able to share the cover of my new novel In Little Stars, published by
@QuercusBooks
in ebook and audiobook on Sep 6, hardback on Feb 2 and paperback in summer next year. It's a modern-day Romeo and Juliet set in a divided northern England. It may just make you cry
We lost my lovely 81-year-old aunt recently, and this is what greeted me when I got to her house for the funeral. She'd read every one of my books and discussed them all with me. Book no 11 is missing one very special reader.
Just been to vote in
#LocalElections2024
Overheard at polling station. Child 1: ‘I’m not allowed to vote’. Mum: ‘No, but when you’re older you will be so I’m showing you how’. Child 1: ‘Why do I need to?’. Mum: ‘Because if you don’t like how things are, you need to change them’.
Appalling state of affairs in the Commons that the speaker did not give Diane Abbott the chance to speak about the threats made against her by the Tory's biggest donor, but men on all sides were allowed to talk about it.

The 'welcome' when you get on a train basically consists of telling you all the things you will be fined and prosecuted for if you have the 'wrong' ticket and suggesting you leave the train immediately if you're in any doubt and to watch out for terrorists if you're staying.

I've taught creative writing workshops in schools where I've found children who are paralysed by the fear of making grammar/spelling mistakes. So sad, please tell your grandson there are editors who can correct spelling/grammar mistakes but none who can add imagination!

Having had 12 books published is largely seen as 'a good innings'. Big publishers have their eyes on shiny new genres/trends/authors which is why so many mid-list, mid-career authors are being discarded/over-looked. Yet many authors have had a break-out book after that point 4/8
I planted bulbs last autumn after reading a tweet from the late Deborah Orr, about how she was planting bulbs, even though she wouldn't be there to see them. I now have purple alliums all over the garden to remind me how lucky I am to be here to see them.
Feel very lucky to have spotted these 2 otters in the river, 10 mins walk from our house. Am now considering building a hide on the river bank to keep an eye on them!

perhaps you could remind your catering staff that saying 'gentlemen, we have alcohol. Remember it's Friday and you have all weekend to deal with your wife', isn't actually acceptable in 2019.

When I was a journalism student I interviewed Suzy Lamplugh's mum about her daughter's disappearance. 33 years on & it feels like nothing has changed - only the names of the mothers of the women who have been abducted/raped/murdered. Our culture & the law still let us down.
