Sending solidarity to everyone affected by this. I have over 15k frozen in Summerhall's bank account & have no idea when & if I might get it back. I feel sick to my stomach. I'm sure many people are in the same boat.
I'm delighted to say I'm the new Plymouth Laureate of Words. The first woman & playwright in the role. I'm walking on air, which for 2020 is really something. Thank you so very much to everyone who voted, it means so much. Thank you to

I don't quite have the words for this yet, I feel very emotional. So I'm going to pick up the award, squeeze my amazing team and sit quietly with a glass of something until I do.

Laura Hortonโs comic monologue โBreathlessโ at 59E59 Theaters finds Sophie (Madeleine MacMahon), a dedicated shopper, at a breaking point. Our critic calls it poignant and vivid.
First day as a writer on attachment
@NationalTheatre
studio. I am stupidly excited. I woke up silly early and walked in from London Fields (where I'm lucky enough to be staying in a friend's flat) to expel some energy! Can't wait to start writing this new piece.
I love the word playwright. The moment I found out why it wasn't playwrite: "It's a person who has wrought words into dramatic form, just as a wheelwright has wrought wheels out of wood & iron. It's a word for someone who builds things." Was when I realised it was the form for me

For anyone needing local support in Plymouth today, Ford Primary School and St Marks Church on Cambridge Road will open their doors from 9am for the community to come together. It's a city that's always felt like a big village really - the sadness is felt today

Playwrights - I'm interested to know if there's anyone sustaining a living on playwriting alone (without safety nets / parental / spousal support). To be transparent I've earnt ยฃ650 from playwriting in 3 years.
We've arrived! Breathless has a three week run Off-Broadway and I am overwhelmed! What a trajectory this play has had, I never imagined any of this happening when I first started jotting it down. Any NY recs let me know please...
The Lido is open for the season, what a beautiful swim. There were two snobby people on the Cremyll Ferry last week going on about how awful Plymouth is, I couldn't disagree with them more.
The
@BarbicanTheatre
's meant a lot to me so I can't wait to start working with the team on the programming & artistic development of this beautiful building. I'm hoping my love of Plymouth, 15yrs PR, recent producing & playwriting experience will help as I step into this role.
I was approached to do this in July. As I'd been dumped earlier in the year by a man who went off with a 23-year-old I thought, fuck it, it's a free meal. I actually had a lovely time & the best thing about this - I nearly got cunt into

My first play opens tomorrow. I'm so grateful for this opportunity at this time (and also terrified). There are still many tickets available, I understand as a first-time writer I'm a risk but I'd love an audience if you can share with anyone you know.
I was honoured to be asked to write for Vogue about chasing your dreams. It's not easy but I'm glad I'm finally trying. I wasn't always encouraged, my shyness meant I was often overlooked. As with one of my favourite lines in Lynn Faces: "see me now Mrs Clint, you steaming f***."
I was in a rehearsal room last week which resulted in a script-in-hand performance. In the post-show an actor said a thing they valued was that I was open to change, wasn't precious & I listened to ideas. It really moved me - I want to be this, I think theatre is collaborative.
I'm delighted to announce that I'm on BBC Voices South. I'm currently developing two pieces for television and so excited to see where it leads. Lucky to be with such a collaborative and collegiate group of people too.
Introducing our second group of Voices writers for 2023. The South hub is the newest addition to the Voices family and includes writers in or from the East, South East and South West of England. Meet the 12 writers and find out more over on our blog >>>

I've had a few wobbles about turning 37 - I'm not in the place I thought I'd be. But then I had a memory pop up today with a friend who died 5 years ago this November & I was reminded that it's a fucking privilege to grow older. Every grey hair & new wrinkle will be celebrated.
I'm delighted to have been shortlisted for Plymouth Laureate of Words. If I were chosen I'd be the first playwright & the first woman. I want to amplify theatre in Plymouth, work in communities & promote the city I was born in & love. Please vote for me if you have a few minutes.

PR so often gets a beating. I've had a few disparaging remarks today & I would like to say in response: I'm not a big name, I'm not from ยฃ, I've just been trying to support ppl to promote themselves. Everyone should be recognised & I understand the frustration but please be kind.
The

Vogue do you want to come to my living quarters? I'm a 37 year old playwright currently living in my parent's attic. I was shortlisted by you for the Vogue Talent Competition many years ago & was definitely the only person to have got there by Megabus, if that helps my cause.
The award-winning playwright, who shot to fame at 19, moved into the same imposing Georgian square in central London that Virginia Woolf, DH Lawrence and Dorothy L Sayers once called home.

I've written a new piece called Life Underwater, it's the biggest play I've attempted & very different to Breathless. We're having a reading at the Criterion & I'd love a friendly crowd. It's free I just need names for the door. Please share with anyone who might be interested.
I'm looking to populate the foyer of Barbican Theatre Plymouth with a bookshelf of play texts as a resource for artists. If anyone is in a position to share this tweet or donate any plays I'd be so grateful.
On the train to London. I have my play reading
@CriTheatre
on Fri (which I'm excitedly terrified about) then I'm delighted to start a six week attachment
@NationalTheatre
. Any London pals I'd love to grab coffees/wines. I've got a new stationary like the first day of school.
NYE is an absolute triumph. I took my mam who is from Tredegar & we both shed tears. So beautiful to see this play on the Olivier stage
@nationaltheatre
. The cast are magnificent and I loved seeing
@michaelsheen
play Aneurin Bevan.
A couple were waiting tonight to tearfully tell us that someone close to them is hoarding, they said watching the play helped them to understand her better. Sometimes I worry it isn't academic or high brow enough, then I have these conversations & I know it doesn't matter.
I'm really enjoying living in a travelodge - having a bath, coffee & tea in bed, being central enough to walk everywhere, using the shower curtain to dress up like a zombie & pretend I'm Alan Partridge. Waking up childlike excited each day to be having a play
@sohotheatre
too.
I've never experienced the shift of emotions anywhere quite as intensely as the Fringe. You're giddy in Lidl one minute and sobbing on the meadows the next.
I forgot I'd applied for BBC drama until I got my rejection today. I'm going to start the fiver in the jar idea for every rejection and when I can go to a restaurant again I'm getting scallops and a pint of wine.
Look what
@Madi_MacMahon
spotted! We'll be
@sohotheatre
from 7th-18th, it would mean the world to see you there! It's been a wild ride so far & it doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon.
I don't currently have representation & would love to invite agents to Breathless

@TRPlymouth
which has now won a Fringe First
@scotsman_arts

Writing Award. 3pm, Pleasance Courtyard, until 29 August.
Feeling overwhelmed today so it's lovely to have my mum & dad here for support. It's a dream come true but it's also emotional. I've found myself hyper focusing on tiny negatives rather than the overall positivity, why do we do this?!
For the last 9 years
@edfringe
I've been a PR. This year, I'm a playwright, producer, bad sex writing facilitator & theatre story collector, it's a change!
40 today! I was having a wobble about this one, even though I know it's a privilege to age, I've really felt the pressure. I think it's largely patriarchal so I'm going to tell that feeling to fuck off & have a lovely time...
Things can change so quickly at the Fringe, one minute you're being annihilated in a review, the next you get a gorgeous one in
@ObserverUK
. Thank you
@matt_barton_
for a beautiful little write up.
I'm still thinking about NYE
@NationalTheatre
.
When my mam and I were chatting, she said:
"He's a self taught man from the Valleys trying to fix the nation, as opposed to entitled politicians trying to break it."
I want more of the former. We need more of the former.

Off to see my mum's first play
@TRPlymouth
this evening. Then my show starts on Monday. It's so exciting and surreal to be working on things simultaneously. Are there any other mother / daughter playwriting duos?! I'd love to know.
Having a kidney infection and sleeping on a sofa at the Fringe which is also someone's office, is very Fringe isn't it.
I'm finally attempting some shows today, any recommendations gratefully received.
It can be easy to lose sight of why we make work, especially in a frenetic bubble like the Fringe where everything is naturally judged. But someone reminded me today why I made my play, for survivors of domestic abuse, including myself, and that gives me a lot of strength.
Despite lovely press & comments (though I know it's divisive) tickets for Lynn Faces are low. I had to hire the space up front, which means I get box office, but the risk is higher (for transparency if we sell 50% I'm 4k down). So if you can spread the word I'd be so grateful.
In floods of tears. This is the theatre I grew up with, where I saw my first ever show. Where I started work as an usher & worked my way to Press Assistant. When I moved back in my thirties they opened their arms to me as a writer. I wouldn't be in the theatre without
@TRPlymouth
The entire artistic team at the Theatre Royal Plymouth are being made redundant in 3 days. Thatโs one of the largest, most well attended theatres outside London. A theatre that now has no artists, and they wonโt be coming back. Our world-beating cultural landscape is in collapse

Working with a glorious group of kind, thoughtful and talented people. It's a very tough industry and experiences like this are pearls. Very excited for the reading today

(and the exhale, hugs and wine afterwards)!
A friend's boyfriend recently said Plymouth was a strange place for me to move to. I was told that leaving London & moving here would ruin my career. It's three years on & those predictions were really quite wrong.
(Though I will say dating is hard here)!
Wow, I am so overwhelmed to have won this award for Lynn Faces, thank you. I have the most incredible team. Huge congratulations to all the nominees, what a list of wonderful people and shows. Anyone struggling, hang on, things can change so quickly.
Never thought I'd have my own place but I've moved into my first home - not behind me, that's my shed! Covered in paint, aching from a deflating airbed, a fridge full of fizz, a heart full of joy & exploring my new area. Can more friends move here please (or visit)

I'm quite overwhelmed by the response to the piece I wrote for

I was at the first of the marches for
#saveourtheatres
today. It's very sobering to imagine a world without them. They are not just buildings but living entities. Here are just a few photos from today, credit Ed Borlase.
7 yrs ago I had my first short play read. I'm not sure what it was about or where I saved it but it was the start of my playwriting journey. I'd saved up to do the only course I could afford at Morley College & it was the culmination of that. Small steps, no one just emerges.
On a 13 hour coach trip back to Plymouth and reflecting on what a month this has been. I wanted to take the time to say thank you to the beautiful audiences, I was routinely moved by your reactions & comments about Breathless. To

team, you've worked tirelessly.
I need a person / group who can knit or crochet me a full sized cow by late June...
It's for my new play, I can't share details yet, but if anyone can help or point me in a direction I'd be very grateful.
1/2 I'm really pleased about this announcement but I won't be resting on my laurels in campaigning. On
@BBCr4today
Dowden said the package was to save 'the crown jewels' & 'cultural institutions' - while that is is very important, it's also imperative to look at the wider ecology
I have an actual in real life play in London opening soon (my 1st). At the moment we've only sold 8 tickets & I'm terrified it'll just be me in the theatre with a bottle of wine. I totally get if people are feeling nervous, but if you're not please come!

In 2021 I became Plymouth Laureate of Words. I'm absolutely loving it. I spent my twenties & early thirties ignoring my instincts to write through fear & I'm really enjoying the possibilities that arise when you start grafting & believing in yourself. First commission is out now.
My name is in The Stage as a writer, I know it's daft but it gave me a little boost. I've written for so long but only started sharing work a few years ago through sheer fear. There are so many rejections, and many more to come, but I'll never stop writing. Keep on keeping on.
I've landed

@ThePleasance
I was so touched to be brought flowers after the show from someone who had come to see Lynn Faces 3 times. This has been such an interesting Fringe. I seemed to have made a decisive show, reviews swung from 'beautiful' to 'worthless,' 'very odd' to 'hilarious.'
4yrs into a 2yr waitlist for an NHS dentist to be told the waitlist doesn't exist now. I've called 19 with no space. I emailed the line for concerns only to be told they won't be responding due to the volume of enquiries. I can't afford private, do I just wait for teeth rot?!
Someone came up to me after Breathless
@TRPlymouth
this week to tell me about their journey with hoarding. They said they don't really go to the theatre but they came to this to feel less alone. These are the conversations you do it for. They made me feel less alone too.
My first 2 play readings were due over the next few months, 1 postponed, the other is now going to happen via The Space over zoom next Thursday at 7pm. I would love an audience for feedback & insight. Looking for that & also dramaturgs & directors to connect with
