Leadership lessons from former U.S. Navy Seal

In high-performing teams, leadership is fluid. Dynamic subordination means the most capable person steps up to lead in a given moment, while others follow – then seamlessly shift when the situation changes.

To all those who tweet at me saying that they “hope I fail”, I have failed many times many times in my life. But more importantly, I’ve learned from every setback, proudly own up to my mistakes, grown from disappointments, and now I’m a glamazon bitch ready for the runway.
Today I had an executive tell me to remove the education requirement for a Head of People role. "I don't care if they only have a High School GED, if they've done amazing work we want them." Damn, that was refreshing. 👏
Can I tell you how excited I am to watch

Dear HR: can we banish the term *best practice* in 2019? There are far too many variables to determine what works and what doesn't in every organization. Let's move past assuming that's not the case, and the belief we should all do what <insert big company> does.
An honest question for you,
@Mike_Pence
, after your attempted joke this weekend. If your grandchild was born prematurely and placed on a ventilator at two months old - their tiny fingers wrapped around yours as the monitors beep in the background - where would you be?
We’re all okay until we’re not. This evening I was not okay. These circumstances we’re in conjure some deep emotions and underlying pain. It’s poison to bury them and suffer silently. Don’t. Let it go. Cry. Shout. Release it. Call friends. You’re not alone. ❤️
I just received an out of office message that the recipient was out this week attending an annual father son camp. 🏕 It made me smile.
Out of office messages don't have to be soulless corporate boilerplate. 📧

Twitter is testing a "Twitter Communities" feature and I'm piloting a new HR/People community. If you'd like to join reply with your handle. ✌️
Note: this is very much a pilot so temper your expectations accordingly. 😎
Reminder: what’s happening right now is not “remote work”. It’s homeschooling, stress-eating, pandemic-anxiety juggling, forced to figure out how to work at home.
This is as sub-optimal as it gets. Imagine what happens when we can design for remote?
Okay okay, hear me out. A 2-week sabbatical, but for *all* HR employees to unplug and recharge before the convergence of back-to-school and the delta variant drains whatever minimal reserves they have left in their tank.
Job Search PSA: Don't put "thought leader" on your resume. Just don't. It will never be a +1 for you. It will be neutral at best, but more likely cast a negative shadow on your candidacy (and humility). See also: ninja, guru, etc...
So you want to up your hustle game? Great! Hug your kids. Get some sleep. Go for a walk. Hit the gym. Read a book. Learn something new. Step away from social. Call a friend you haven't spoken to in a year.
Balance is what success is built on.

We should stop thinking of learning as a thing separate from our day job. It's one of the most important parts of our job, and the only real job security you have. 🧠🤓
If you want to build a long career your first loyalty needs to be to yourself, not your employer. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize and defend your own development.
I appreciate companies stepping up to cover travel/etc costs, but the fact that employees will have to disclose these deeply personal decisions to their employers is so fucked up.

I began my career with fifteen years of operating experience leading talent teams at Ticketmaster, Magento, and NPR.
Coming up on the six year anniversary of my brother Kai’s death from opioid abuse. The heaviness of grief and loss lingers in the shadows as the years pass but always seems to find me when the anniversary nears.
In an environment where some feel mocking addiction is an acceptable form of political discourse, I want to share the story of another addict - my brother Kai.
5 years ago today I lost Kai to opioid addiction. This is what losing a loved one to addiction feels like.

Pssssst....HR. Yes, you. This is your time. Now. This moment. Seize it. Stand up. Be bold. Be brave. Be principled. Lean on your peers. Rise up to this occasion. Stand on the right side of history. Few are in your position to drive real change. Own it. Be it.

Learned an interesting analogy in therapy today:
Grief is like a balloon continually filling with emotions. If you don’t stop from time to time to let some of the emotions out, it bursts in an eruption of acute pain and sadness.
