Their Replies tab only shows them responding to tweets that are popular. Typically, it's ones about family members dying, pets, or pets dying, but other stuff shows up there. Notice how some of the replies are in quotation marks. Feels very botty...

Already, things are quite... odd. The tweets made on the 3rd all have no likes, but 9-18 replies. And they're all cut off, too. Not at 280 characters like you might expect, though; it's about 20 short. Even then, it wouldn't matter since these are verified accounts!

Firstly, a person or group of people, likely Vietnamese, is turning mostly abandoned, decade old Twitter accounts into bot accounts. How they're getting these accounts is unknown; could be hacking or buying them. And some are being created fresh, like Mariner Eugene.

These bots are then rigged up to ChatGPT to make replies. ChatGPT can interpret text and (if GPT 4.0) images, but NOT videos. Therefore, when scraping a tweet to make a response to a video, it only sees the text part. And if there is no text, it gets confused and makes shit up.

Of course, Twitter eventually catches on - like with silviapaolacast. But there's a back-up plan in place. By having the bots all interact with each other, they can appear more legitimate. "See, we're not just spamming in replies, we do other stuff, too!"

Here's Mariner Eugene. Joined September 2023, has one of those suggested handles twitter gives you, and post about cars. Weirdly, they repost ads for cars while also sticking in hashtags that were trending at the time. Matthew Perry died on October 28.

Second, most of these accounts are have Twitter Blue and are replying to incredibly popular posts in the most inane ways, likely to farm engagement and money. One account barely makes anything from tweet monetization - but if you have several, you can make a lot more.

Their regular tweets are even more interesting. They're all in Vietnamese! ...until you get to the very bottom. Then you see 3 tweets: two from 7/3/2009, and one from 7/5/2009. All 3 of them are in Chinese. Then... nothing, until 1/6/2024, where they return but speak Vietnamese.

I'm starting to notice a pattern. Another account, from the original video. Blair Peyton Walls. Joined March 2010. Their bio is... weird. All of the other accounts lacked a bio completely. Replies are as you expect: only under popular tweets and tweets about pets.

Since December 6, 2023, this account has been talking about crypto and doesn't get cut off like calliecake did. They also get noticeably fewer interactions than the other accounts. On the December 3 and 4, however, they posted a couple random memes instead.
