Ohio Northern Assc Prof researching water-energy nexus. PhD in civil eng, MS biology, BS electrical eng and BS geology. Views are my own. (she/her/hers)
Officially being awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor, effective Aug 21 (my bday)! What great news for Valentine’s Day! This poor kid from Appalachia is proving to the world that you can do something, be someone, and change the world for the better.
@iLemmon
I kept me name. Problem solved.
Reality is: do what works for you, and have an honest discussion with your partner. Hopefully you two can figure out what works for your relationship, and individuality.
Congrats on your soon to be PhD!!!

Well that’s because clearly anyone with a disability is unlovable, so marriage won’t be an issue! (Insert heavy sarcasm)
These laws are so damaging on so many levels!
@celestelabedz
Electricity. I have an electrical engineering degree and can do electricity-physics calculations. I study power plants and the grid. But it all still seems magical.
@ewenthel
But can we say good on the students for recognizing that people suck and the powers that be are not going to build a ramp? So they designed an (yes, expensive) alternative?
And yes, why are there not more ramps?
@SusannaLHarris
Ah yes, the old “well if it doesn’t happen to me, it can’t happen to anyone.”
Flip side: when something good happens, your gender will be blamed: “nice promotion, it must feel good to get a leg up for being a women. Tom was a better candidate, but it’s nice you are here.”
@kristenladd_
I like low rise and mid rise jeans.
But here’s the way to solve everything: have all styles of jeans available at all times! Everyone wins!
Also, pockets! Quit having fake-pockets on everything for women.

Had a similar experience at “one of the best hospitals” when the pandemic started. I had a well-fitting, clean mask. They forced me to use their flimsy, from a community box, mask. I had driven 2 hrs and waited 3 mons for appt, so I caved. Made me so angry.

Neato! I got a $2000 bill for an EKG I supposedly had, in a state I don’t live, in for a condition I don’t have! I love healthcare 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
@the_tweedy
A doctor told me to eat my veggies and eat less meat.
Guess what 2 things I already do? I love veggies and am vegetarian-adjacent as I call it. I told him I eat less meat and load up on veggies. He said “oh, good.” That was it. Like no other advice.
I have a new doctor now.
@Bentonmcdesq
@taylorsschumann
I checked in for an appt. Sat in waiting area a long while. Got a call from the office that I was a no show and needed to reschedule. “I’m literally sitting in your waiting area, and have been here since before my appointment.” They were surprised, and then had to “fit me in.”
@kirstinetaylor
I don’t want to believe you.* They really did not start with African American studies? This can’t be like all the horror films where the black guy is the first to die? Right?...
*I do actually believe you. I’m in a sad shock/funk from the news.

All of this!
Me: “So my period has been irregular my whole life, but lately it has been irregular *for me*. I’m concerned.”
Doc: “well since it is still within the guidelines of “ok” based on years of basically no research done on women’s periods, you’re fine.”
Me: 😑😑😑😑
Students: you are not your grades. Do not take grades personally. If you barely pass DiffEq, that’s ok. If you fail a class and need to retake it, that’s ok too. If you aced Physics but did poorly in Chemistry, that’s ok. You are a whole person, not a number.

As a kid, my faves were:
10 Little Puppy Dogs
Stellaluna
Pokey Puppy (the one with sound)
Little Critter Delivers the Mail
The Ivy Cottage
The Crippled Lamb
I still love these books now. Maybe this helps?
It’s officially official… I have submitted my (digital) materials for promotion and tenure! Now the long wait (announcements usually come in March or April).
I’m so sick of these mandatory training modules that are nothing more than a check-box for the university. Making me watch 15 minutes of someone dramatically reading slides, followed by the world’s easiest quiz, does not actually teach me about [insert training topic here].
@AcademicChatter
I wore my wedding ring: had 2 firm offers & 1 potential offer for faculty positions. So in my limited sampling, I don’t think wearing it affected me negatively.
I did debate it just as you are & considered not wearing my ring.
Why do we have to worry about these things in 2019?
@realgirl_fieri
Sending kids alone on flights to visit somewhere. Poor: how could you not fly with your kid to grandma’s house? Rich: oh wow, your kid gets to do so many fun things and be so well traveled!

Goodbye, vanilla-scented “men’s” body wash I fell in love with in 8th grade, and literally never saw again once I had finished the bottle.

How do you decide to which journal you submit a paper? I have a manuscript ready; it is a 5 author, highly interdisciplinary work. So many journal scopes seem close, but not exact. Advice welcome (besides write to a specific journal, too late for that)!
@abbynissenbaum
That’s why I only applied to 4 graduate school programs. I could not afford to apply to more. A friend gifted me an application, my bf’s parents gifted me an application, and I borrowed money from another friend to pay the other two fees. So yeah... grad app fees are a barrier.
@thecrobe
I reviewed a paper one time that fit a curve to 3 data points and called it good. They sampled 3 times over what would be a 3-month decomp, and claimed that the 3 samples proved the decomp was a 2nd order polynomial with R = 1.
No. Just no. It was an obvious reject.
The dos & don’ts of academic cover letters: a thread.
Inspired by the suggestion of
@KateElfer
& the pile of cover letters I read today for a visiting asst prof position.
My opinions, as a search committee member and a new prof who just went through this last year.

@thetracysimone
No. It is not normal. Talk with the disability services head (or appropriate person/dept). It *is* normal to discuss accommodations with each professor. It helps us understand how best to help you. But someone not meeting your needs is rude to say the least, and wrong.
@GHMansfield
@ickiestvicki
They have wheelchairs at the hospital already! Why would they need to borrow yours? That’s rude first of all and lazy on them for not using the ones they already have. Plus, mobility devices are an extension of the person. Like you wouldn’t ask to borrow someone’s arm would you?
@ProfessaJay
I won a $50 savings bond in junior high. I think it was like a 20 year one. On principle I decided to wait all 20 years.
20 yrs later, then I realized how silly savings bonds are when $50, 20 years later was worth like nothing compared to the $13 I could have had in 1998.

See, I got a “the professor is fake excited about engineering” comment. Like sure, ok. That’s why I earned an entire PhD in engineering. Because I was fake excited and not actually excited. People are known to earn PhDs in fields they don’t care about at all.

Dan gave me a hedgehog as my (early) wedding present. Does that count as being epic?
I remember taking a survey from

after getting married and laughing as I selected “other” and wrote in hedgehog as the “what did your spouse get you as a wedding gift” question.

Apparently a few students made comments to my dept chair that I wear too many fun colors and outfits. Sorry for liking color and not wanting to wear black all day every day?!?! Sigh...
@DrColes6
Ah yes, an oldie but goodie.
After debating your PhD topic, they then ask you about some topic that isn’t your specialty. When you don’t know the answer, they yell “ha! Some expert you are!!”
Thank you for your brilliance, keep up the good work!
Update: my covid19 test was negative.
Both a blessing and a curse.
A blessing in that I hopefully will not end up at a hospital needing a ventilator.
A curse bc now that means I don’t know what I do have that’s causing me these symptoms, particularly the breathing issues.

Having just visited France, I can confirm this is true! The French food was boring, under seasoned, and they had very little in the way of vegetarian food.
Pastries, I’ll give that sun to the French.
Today’s
#WomenInSTEM
moment happened when a grandma, mom, & daughter saw me in my PhD robes in a public restroom. My robes sparked an entire conversation about school, doing your best, and believing in yourself. That little girl is going to be in my class someday, I can feel it.

I like when they temp check you, and touch the thermometer to your forehead or wrist. And then keep on using the same one to test everyone. Like cool, thanks for touching me with the same device you used on 87 other people today, and haven’t cleaned once since June.
We spoke to Dr. Lauren Logan

about how water is used to make energy and the tradeoffs to both save water and make more juice to power the planet.
It's such an insightful and real conversation.

Here’s a new
#faculty
idea: I’m giving my students a 10 point “quiz” where they have to stop by during office hours to introduce themselves. This will help me get to know them, and I’ll learn their names. & They’ll learn about me (I won’t just be “the new prof” anymore).

Symptoms got worse again. Breathing difficulties, increased muscle cramps/headache, fingers were turning blue. Called my doc, referred to the

hotline, and this time my case was enough to be tested. So folks, I’m officially on quarantine and awaiting results.
@aliciaandrz
I think there is a difference between “I need clarification or something quick” vs “I literally spent 0 time reading the syllabus and am asking the most basic of questions.”
Yay: “Can you remind me of your late policy on homework?” Sure thing!
Nay: “Do we have a final?” Srly!
Dan and I celebrated 3 yrs of marriage (Sept 2 is our anniversary) by unplugging and spending the weekend hiking and enjoying nature. What a fantastic time! Stress levels dropped, and we had so much fun hiking in Appalachia. The hills, how I miss them!
@aliciaandrz
It also showed who had $$ and who didn’t. One year I had a bf for Valentines Day and he (his mom) got me a bunch of stuff for the big day. I felt so special. Next year I happened to be single on Valentines Day and felt like a loser. High school is wild in f-ed up ways.
Focus on your growth as an individual, and your knowledge growth. Think about what skills you now have to be successful in your future career. And if you need to retake a class, you’ll learn those skills better the second time around. Growth, work ethic, and dedication = success.
Journal X sent me a revision of a paper that should have been desk rejected. The paper is still bad. Their “revision” took 10 days.
Editors: stop abusing peer reviewers. I’ve had bad experiences recently; I’m now less inclined to accept reviews.

Does anyone else completely hate US healthcare?!?
I have asked doctors, admins, staff, everyone to give me a price estimate for some procedures and they give me the run around, and refuse to answer. “How much do you normally charge for X procedure?” is a valid question!!!
Just gave my last final of the semester! And to celebrate the end of fall semester, I wore this fantastic

Tuition waivers are a vital part of graduate education. Without waivers, grad school would be financially out of reach for many, including myself!
Today is a good day! I got my first dose of the covid vaccine! Turns out my health issues did count in the priority list, and I am thankful to have been given the vaccine!!! So far no reaction. My arm doesn’t even hurt (yet).
And then there were three…
The Logan-Newkirk fellowship of pets lost Gimli today. His cancer was too rapid, and he succumbed today. The meds were not enough to keep him going. We treasure the ~5 yrs we had with him, and will remember all the good times we had. I love you Gimli!

What makes a good gift for earning tenure? Asking for myself.
I just ordered a custom lipstick (made it ONU orange) and called it “Tenured.”
Any other ideas? I do not need a coffee mug or tote bag with Tenured on it (have too many mugs and bags as it is).

Sure, that’s the reason. Not sexism and racism embedded into the system. Nope, couldn’t be systemic issues.

So... no quality control over at the ID printing facility? Like who looked at this ID before mailing it out and was like “nailed it!” 😂😂😂
I love being a professor. And I love sharing my path, my advice, and more with students. Working on a “guide to the academic career path” right now. Being the “go-to” for this topic makes me smile.
Yes, academia is flawed, so let’s fix the flaws and make it better :)

When folks have this rx to my field, I say “lucky for you someone likes math & science, or else you’d be pretty S.O.L. having to make your own housing, electricity, & drinking water!”
Have something like that ready in your back pocket?

Undefined acronym!
Example: “we used the UTRmJp to compute the average” and no where in the paper is UTRmJp defined. Acronyms are not necessarily universal or well-known, folks!

This is why I switch my terminology depending on the audience.
To friends and family: I’m a professor.
To academics: I’m an assistant professor.

By context, I can tell they meant necroslurry (topic is water/soil pollution from cemeteries). But dang, that word mixup has me laughing.

Tell me you are reading Dune without telling me you are reading Dune…
But for real, I read Dune and enjoyed all the sand worm stuff, but was bored by the politics. And environmental permitting is part of my research. I just didn’t want politics in my “for fun” read.
What is going on with people fighting about tweeting science vs. personal stuff?!? Why not both?!? And if you only do one, that’s cool. You do you, and people can follow or unfollow as they please. I love science and retweeting papers. I also tweet pictures of my pets. So what?!
Gimli has been buried in the backyard, between the viburnum and peony bushes. I dressed him in his cloak and leaf of Lorien pin so he will be ready for the next adventures beyond Middle Earth. I will miss you so much Gimli!
Was in a difficult situation, and very few were speaking up/out (including many people w/ higher positions than me).
I stepped up. Friends... it can be difficult to speak up, especially when low in rank, but it is so so important. If you have the power to do so, say something!

That’s what Dan said today. He walked up to me and said “I now understand why everyone went crazy in the 20’s and threw parties all the time after surviving the flu pandemic.”
I was sorting laundry and realized I haven’t worn anything fancy since March. I miss my party dresses!
@gramnegativity
I have an MS in biology. The number of times people have made fun of me for it is sad. My bio MS made my engineering PhD better (interdisciplinary = awesome)! Also, when I don’t know some rando fact about humans, ppl are like “I thought you had a biology degree?!” 🤦🏻♀️
As a woman in engineering, it sometimes doesn’t fully register just how few of us there are in academia until I attend a luncheon and am the only woman at the table. I’m so used to it that I don’t always notice.
The important thing: I’m at the table.

Well, I spoke too soon about dose 2 of the vaccine. I feel like I have been run over by a truck. My whole body hurts. I didn’t get much sleep bc of the pain.
Still worth it, FYI. Vaccines save lives.
