Labour's new Foreign Secretary
@DavidLammy
using one of his first interventions to speak about Gaza, including:
👉Immediate ceasefire
👉Release of hostages
👉Unfettered aid
👉Two state solution
LFPME has called for these since October and welcomes them now being UK Govt policy
🧵 In the week since our last statement, we have seen the bombing of a refugee camp and UN schools, UNRWA shelters damaged, the killing of journalists and UN staff, and now the bombing of ambulances outside Al-Shifa hospital. (1/17)
11 years ago senior UK lawyers reported that Israel’s treatment of Palestinian child prisoners breaks international humanitarian law- eg by illegally removing them to prisons in Israel. It’s still going on. Will PM Sunak raise this when he hosts PM Netanyahu at Downing St? 1/3
The restoration of
@UNRWA
funding has been central to LFPME’s work for months. We welcome this announcement and are pleased to see Labour commitments being honoured.
Thank you to all our MPs, the wider advocacy movement, &
@DavidLammy
for working with us to make this happen 👏
The government has ended the funding pause on
@UNRWA
- effective immediately.
This begins with £21m to support the humanitarian response in Gaza, provide essential services for refugees across the region, and alleviate the suffering of civilians.

An Israeli attack on Rafah would be catastrophic. People in Gaza have nowhere safe to go.
Famine is spreading, children are starving, and tens of thousands have already been killed.
🛑 Stop the attack on Rafah 🛑
#CeasefireNOW
🧵 We are deeply appalled by the events that transpired at Al Aqsa in occupied East Jerusalem overnight. These were characterised by the horrifying sight of worshippers being subjected to assaults by Israeli forces during the holy month of Ramadan. [1/5]
🧵This evening LFPME hosted a discussion in Parliament, led by
@NazShahBfd
, and with special guest speakers
@hzomlot
,
@MedicalAidPal
,
@Doylech
, and
@LPHR_Lawyers
. Thank you to our speakers and to all the MPs who joined us for an important, timely and powerful conversation. [1/6]
Yesterday’s awful news about the killing of seven aid workers by Israeli forces is the latest in a string of horrors in Gaza.
It brings the total number of aid workers killed to 196, despite their protection under international law.
[🧵1/6]
Last night we held our LFPME Reception in Parliament. We were delighted to welcome new and returning Labour MPs, Peers, NGOs and diplomatic representatives from across the Middle East.
Special thanks to our guest speakers

We welcome the publication of the Colonna Review following the allegations made by Israel about UNRWA being infiltrated by terrorist organisations.
We are encouraged that it found UNRWA’s processes are more developed than other similar UN or NGO agencies.
[1/6]
The UK Government said it had to wait for the Colonna Review before restoring funding to
@UNRWA
.
But the review was published a week ago and we’ve heard nothing.
Lives are at stake. Funding must be restored now.
🧵Today
@BethWinterMP
secured an urgent question on the appalling events in Jenin. We’re grateful to her and all of our LFPME MPs for their contributions and for pressing the UK Government to take action [1/8]
The past 24 hours have seen a horrifying Israeli military assault on Jenin.
The UK is President of the UN Security Council but how has it answered the Palestinian call for protection?
I questioned the Foreign Minister but did not receive the answers needed.

32 Labour MPs spoke in Parliament today during an Urgent Question on Gaza, called by
@DavidLammy
.
LFPME MPs were clear on the need for:
➡️ immediate ceasefire
➡️ hostages released
➡️ unhindered humanitarian aid
➡️ upholding international law
➡️ suspension of arms transfers
⚖️ The ICJ has just issued new provisional measures in relation to Gaza:
👉 Immediate halt to the military offensive in Rafah.
👉 Immediate and unconditional release of hostages.
👉 Open and maintain the Rafah crossing for aid.
👉 Ensure unimpeded access for investigators.
LFPME remains committed to our 5 urgent calls. In doing so, we stand with the UN and its agencies, an increasing number of international partners, and 700+ NGOs from around the world.
1️⃣Immediate and unconditional release of hostages.
2️⃣Immediate ceasefire by all parties.⤵️
Really encouraging to see so many Labour MPs continuing to raise the situation in Palestine at every opportunity in Parliament.
Today 15 of our MPs, including 3 frontbenchers, pressed the Government on both Gaza and the West Bank.

East Jerusalem, which is currently occupied by Israel, has long been considered as a potential future capital of a viable Palestinian state, recognised under international law; it is not the place of the US Administration to pre-empt any future agreement
The situation in Gaza is beyond words.
The UK Government must immediately:
👉 Suspend arms transfers to Israel.
👉 Call for an immediate ceasefire & release of hostages.
👉 Support international accountability through the ICC & ICJ.
👉 Reverse its suspension of UNRWA funding.
The decision by Trump is deliberately provocative. ..it is not the place of the US administration to pre-empt any future agreement. The occupation of East Jerusalem is illegal under international law and remains so.
People are rightly horrified by what’s going on in Gaza.
Ahead of the election, they’re also rightly asking where parties stand on Palestine.
👇 Take 1 minute to watch
@JonAshworth
set out clearly where he, LFPME, and
@UKLabour
stand
Today marks the 15th year of the blockade on Gaza - the sea, land and air blockade isolates citizens and strips them of their freedom. As the UN rightly states, this is a denial of basic human rights in contravention of international law and amounts to collective punishment
#gaza
Following the Israeli military designation of Palestinian organisations we are calling on the UK government to press the Israeli government to reverse this decision and for these organisations autonomy and freedom to guaranteed.
Yesterday there was a strong showing of Labour MPs in the Commons statement on Gaza.
Almost all of these echoed one or more of LFPME's 5 asks - ceasefire, aid, hostage release, accountability, 2-state solution. We're grateful to all our MPs for their work on Palestine.
🧵👇
This evening LFPME was honoured to host a special meeting on Gaza, with ambassadors from Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Qatar. Thank you to Their Excellencies for joining us, to
@NazShahBfd
for organising, and to
@JulieElliottMP
for chairing
Important to meet with Dr Nabil Shaath and colleagues today who said movement towards reconciliation was under way and all parties will be meeting to move forward with the timetable towards elections next year
This position is unacceptable and is entirely divorced from the realities on the ground. Merely calling for a return to calm is insufficient; the UK Government must also adjust their stance on accountability to reflect the gravity of the situation. [5/5]
🧵/🇵🇸 Today marks 75 years since the Nakba, when hundreds of Palestinian towns were destroyed and more than half of the Palestinian population was forcibly displaced. The legacy of those events is still felt to this day. [1/5]
Congratulations to
@DavidLammy
on his appointment as Foreign Secretary.
We look forward to working with you to deliver on Labour’s stated aims of:
🕊️ An immediate ceasefire and release of hostages
⚖️ Upholding international law
💷 Refunding UNRWA
✍️ Recognising Palestine
This distressing incident is indicative of a much larger pattern of callous disregard and disrespect for holy sites and the right to worship, which is also evidenced by recent attacks on Christian sites in the Holy Land. [2/5]
Thanks to
@WHOoPt1
for strong briefing on
#Gaza
focusing on crisis currently facing Gazans, esp lack of access to healthcare as
@EmilyThornberry
begins visit around OPTs
We then heard from
@hzomlot
who set out that now is the time for the international community to start talking properly about the overdue long-term political solution. He stressed that there is no military solution to this and that the Palestinian issue cannot be ignored. [5/6]
Just this week, the UK Government chose to abstain on a UNHRC resolution that called for justice and accountability, while also opposing votes on settlements and self-determination. [4/5]
The prevalence of such violence against Palestinians is a daily occurrence, and is the direct result of the international community's failure to ensure accountability for such heinous acts. [3/5]

now is more critical than ever
When a UK-sponsored investigation has documented Israel breaching UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, when illegal occupation is being deepened and when Israelis themselves are protesting against their govt, why is our PM rolling out the red carpet for PM Netanyahu? 3/3
1/2 LFPME MPs and chair
@JulieElliottMP
are calling on the UK govt to take concrete steps to ensure international law is upheld, which Israel has continuously failed to adhere to. The threatened expulsion of Palestinians from their homes in Jerusalem,
Many people are understandably anguished by what is happening in Gaza and feel strongly about the situation in Palestine more widely.
We want to be clear with you about where LFPME stands.
👉 Find out more here -
We support the position
@oxfamgb
has set out, that a ceasefire is the only solution that works.
Calling for humanitarian pauses or corridors accepts the premise that international humanitarian law (IHL) can be ignored. (3/17)
LFPME continues to be dismayed by the destructive events in Gaza and Israel as well as the loss of thousands of civilian lives, including children. We are extremely concerned at the potential for escalation and further unacceptable casualties. [2/5]
2012 UK Govt-sponsored investigation by senior lawyers into Palestinian children in Israeli military detention here
Legal implications today of Israel’s ongoing removal of Palestinian child detainees to prisons in Israel here 2/3
The international community cannot say we were not warned. We were. But people have not listened.
We believe it is imperative for the international community to press for a ceasefire with a unified voice. (2/17)
As such, we urgently call for:
👉 An immediate ceasefire by all parties, including stepping back from an expected ground invasion and a cessation of rocket fire.
👉 The immediate and unconditional release of all hostages brutally taken by Hamas. [3/5]
We're concerned about the worsening situation in Gaza and the further heightened tensions which could bring utter disaster to Palestinians in Gaza. Paramount now that the UK govt responds with strong action
The US Governments decision to end contributions to
@UNRWA
is completely reckless. In doing so they have turned their backs on vulnerable
#Palestinian
#refugees
The UK Government must work with international partners to fill this gap urgently
The passing of Saeb Erakat is a significant transition in Palestinian history & reality. He was firmly committed to his people's rights, unwavering in his pursuit of a just peace, & totally undaunted in his quest for freedom & rights. Rest in peace & power my friend.
3️⃣Unfettered humanitarian access to Gaza.
4️⃣Proactive upholding of international law, with appropriate investigation and accountability for breaches.
5️⃣A serious and concerted reinvigoration of international efforts for a Two-State Solution.
The Govt needs to do what we and Labour MPs have been urging for months:
1️⃣Suspend arms transfers to Israel.
2️⃣Support international accountability mechanisms for alleged breaches of international law by all parties, including Hamas.
3️⃣Remove its suspension on funding for UNRWA.
Reports emerging from Gaza of mass graves are shocking. The UN must be granted full access to the sites and there must be an independent and credible investigation.
Each day brings new layers of catastrophe for Gaza. This has to stop.
We continue to make our 5 urgent calls 👇
Pressing the Government on UNRWA,
@alexsobel
said it was scandalous that the UK Government continues to suspend funding.
He explained to the Minister how it is the only organisation big enough to facilitate aid and that both Canada and Sweden have resumed funding. [4/17]
