After over a decade of querying, it feels absolutely unreal that I get to announce I'm now represented by Nicole Eisenbraun and Ginger Clark of @ClarkLiterary . I loved their enthusiasm for my grumpy x grumpier YA romantasy, and can't wait to see what we do with it together.

Back from my hike so let's do this. For context, I have "won" #NaNoWriMo ten times and previously collaborated with them on their official channel. I'm no longer involved with them for... all the reasons. So some alternative resources I've collected.

I once had an agent reject me on an MS that was hyper specific to their MSWL and within minutes of the rejection tweet about reading a query they loved the premise of but didn't like the execution of, and yes it was demoralzing.

If I'm quiet lately it's because I'm on my fifth time querying with the 18th book I've written, and have a 0% request rate and I just don't know what to do with that. And yes I am writing the next thing (and the next next thing) but it sure doesn't feel like it *matters*

Logically I know it's fine to query agents who've passed on previous books but it's lowkey embarrassing when you've queried three books in as many years. Just like annually sliding into their inbox all bernie sanders voice "I am once again asking you to consider working with me"

I actually find the idea that a pitch event doesn't have value without participation from agents/editors/presses to be really sad. To me it reinforces the idea that the value in our work is determined by gatekeepers. Peer visibility absolutely has value.

Authors are told that if they want to be published, they should treat their writing like a career. This advice is almost always used to admonish authors to work harder and never to tell authors that their writing is a professional enterprise that deserves professional respect.

I think there are two primary benefits to NaNoWriMo. One is the productivity goals/tracking. The other is the community. And I think there are a lot of tools out there to help with both of these, often in ways that are more flexible than what NaNo offers.

3. Related, writing is a more isolated endeavor than a lot of other art. The communities we do have are rarely in-person or local. They're also incredibly cliquey and your ability to participate is largely impacted by the goalposts you've reached.

I think it's useful to remember that agents often see their own rejections as a quick one-off while authors usually experience rejections in the aggregate. Agents only see themselves as one door that's closing, while authors often are staring down a long hallway of locked doors.

Even when people acknowledge that querying is bad right now, it's usually made to sound like some temporary turbulence that will get better soon. Just keep writing, it'll probably be better by the time your next book is ready. It's not getting better. It's likely to get worse.

While I'm waiting for my #RevPit subs to come in, how about a thread on the dreaded synopsis. I think a lot of the concern over the synopsis comes from the fact that a lot of authors don't really know how it's used. It's hard to write when you don't understand your objective.

I know agents can see my tweets and I try my hardest to be professional. But sometimes I really just wish I could say my content is not for you and focus on talking to authors about industry challenges without bending over backwards to avoid offending agents.

If you don't know how to respond to an author who's struggling with querying try "That's so hard, I hope your work finds the advocates it deserves." It acknowledges struggle without verging into toxic positivity.

It's true that pitch events are not your one ticket to representation and lots of authors find success querying, but it's okay to feel sad about not getting likes. It's okay to feel sad at any point in the finding-an-agent process, because it's just really emotionally draining.

A funny thing about being a querying author is that you're expected to follow a ton of etiquette rules of the writing community while receiving none of the benefits of being part of that community.

Let querying authors complain. You have already crossed the hurdle that so many of us haven't and we shouldn't be expected to keep smiling while each of the rejections cut us deep and let us bleed.

Given recent discussions surrounding YA, it felt time to write this thing I've been scared of writing about how transitioning from YA romance to adult romance as an ace reader has kind of sucked.

Just submitted my winner and runner-up for #RevPit 😬 Let me say, I really could have worked with so many of you. You absolutely crushed my MSWL. And the overall talent was the best I've seen in my 4 years doing the contest. Such cool books and authors. You all are amazing.
