Just had a Nigerian elder as a Lyft driver. It was a special moment. At the end of the ride he said, "I love you my brother. I pray to God that you finish your PhD and accomplish everything that you need to in life." Almost jumped back in and told him to spin the block lol #SocAF

When folks write in ways that are super confusing and take away from the main point, I call it "speaking in cursive" lol. Like you don't have to do all that to sound smart. It's okay to write clearly.

During a campus visit a couple of years ago, I had a 1x1 with a Sr. prof. Earlier, I saw students running in and out of his office; he had numerous teaching awards. I asked, "What's your teaching philosophy?" In the spirit of bell hooks, he replied, "love." Changed me forever.

Being kind and thoughtful goes such a long way in academia. I know folks who've had surgery and their advisors would respond, "Okay, I'm looking forward to the tables." W/o even asking if they are okay. Same response to deaths. Corporate was something, but academia is whew. 1/2

Re-reading is so powerful. When I return to the text I'm reminded of how far I've traveled since the last time we met. With so many articles and books dropping its easy to lose sight of the power of returning--something Black folks have always understood.

My favorite practice right now is reaching out to scholars who inspire me and giving them their flowers. 1) the affirmation is uplifting and 2) it's even better when it's not attached to an ask.

1st half of my dissy conclusion is done. beautiful lol. A coda to Black freedom. Leaning on Hartman's use of "chorus" as resistance to describe how Black folks move and improvise within enclosure, but tied it to a discussion of maroonage & seeking Earth beyond an antiblack world.

Trial by a jury of your peers. If I'm Black/working class & my jury is white/middle class, those aren't my peers right? So if I submit an article for peer-review and it is reviewed by the same demographic, is that a "peer-review?" Lol I'm asking for a friend.
