So, what is my conclusion of all this? It seems that Russia is desperate to modernize its tanks but it can't afford to keep up, which could be due to sanctions. This results in "hybrids" using tech designed for other tanks, crudely upgraded and sent to the frontlines. 5/6

However, that's not the most interesting thing. The tanks appear to have optics which do not match the T-80BVM's configuration. In fact, it turns out that they have the old 1G42 gunner sight paired with 1PN-96MT-02 thermals. 3/6

The 1PN-96MT-02 sight was designed to be used to modernize the T-62 tank. Russia is likely using it because it is now unable to produce more modern Sosna-U optics for its T-72 and T-80 tanks. The same sight was seen on a T-72B tank receiving upgrades back in early January. 4/6

Comparison of the turrets of T-90A and T-90M. The T-90M turret is less angled, therefore less armoured than T-90A's, but it is more spacious. It is likely that the cheeks were thickened to combat the loss of protection, bringing it back to T-90A level while being more spacious.

Conclusion: The M1A1SA has a clear advantage over the T-90M when it comes to imaging capabilities. Despite both being considered 2nd generation thermals, the GPS-LOS has nearly twice the resolution and range. Generation is arbitrary, as the criteria differs with each nation.

The reason for the fire is simple: old, improperly stored ammunition. The tank fires a shot and when the breech opens, burning pieces of propellant are ejected into the crew compartment. The improper conditions, especially a high level of moisture, degrade the ammunition.

Another side effect of firing this degraded ammunition is an excessive amount of gas blowing back into the crew compartment. This is not safe to inhale and after prolonged exposure can cause issues such as carbon monoxide poisoning.

As for the mudguards, the reason they appear like that is because they are too big for the T-62M. They don't fit because they were never supposed to. The rubber extends more than on T-90M's hull due to its geometry. However, this does not prevent them from being mounted. 4/9

Thin plates are only effective against shaped charge munitions (Kontakt-1, ARAT etc.) Thicker plates will also be effective against kinetic munitions (Relikt, FY-4 etc.) Other types of non-conventional ERA exist, such as Nizh, using shaped charges to cut through the projectile.

July 2023 More photos of 3BM60 Svinets-2 APFSDS with a Tungsten core being fielded to russian tank troops in Ukraine. Only two shells are visible. This ammunition is extremely rare. #Ukraine #UkraineRussiaWar #UkraineWar

The muzzle reference system is infact different & it is larger, but not edited. It is either a mockup or a laser rangefinder, different from the old one used by T-62M. It's likely decorative. The tank is probably intended to be a T-90M vismod, not a real upgrade. 5/9

The biggest downsides of ERA are its large explosive content and lack of multi-hit capability. The explosive mixture being activated evenly throughout means that the entire protective block is spent and can not be reused.

@EuromaidanPress This is not wood, it's a material called textolite. It's easy to confuse it because it's very dirty in the video, but they have vastly different properties.

Reactive armours are a type of passive protection that reacts to an impact, working against the penetration of a projectile. They work primarily against shaped charges and in some cases kinetic projectiles. The main types of reactive armour are ERA, SLERA, NxRA and NERA.

Self-Limiting Reactive Armour (SLERA) This armour is highly similar to ERA, however its explosive content is reduced and semi localized. It has been most notably used on Israeli Merkava tanks. Sometimes the explosive compound will be combined with an energetic material.

In the early 1990s, Yekaterinburg Plant No.9 received a request to create two new cannons of different calibers, but using a similar technology and design. The resulting cannons were the 125mm 2A82 cannon and the 152mm 2A83 cannon respectively. 1/13

It appears that some russian tankers are still receiving the more powerful 3BM60 APFSDS as opposed to the usual 3BM42. In the video, a T-80BVM crew is unpacking the ammunition. #UkraineRussiaWar #UkraineWar #Ukraine

Non-Explosive Reactive Armour (NxRA) This armour has no explosives. It uses only energetic materials in its composition, usually sandwiched between two plates. The energetic material reacts on impact, creating a localized energy outburst that bends the steel plates outwards.

This is how the inside of the turret looks after firing several shots. The tanker was hospitalized after the race.

Energetic materials react by releasing chemical energy on impact with a projectile (exploding, expanding, releasing gas etc.) Explosives are a type of energetic material, reacting very violently. Less violent materials may be used together with explosives in SLERA.

NERA is the most safe, while ERA is the most dangerous. ERA offers the most protection, while NERA the least. Modern chemistry and material science have allowed for highly specific and incredibly safe yet effective energetic materials. They can be tailored for different needs.

The casette bustle autoloader caught the attention of many engineers. The idea was to place the 900mm APFSDS in the bustle while keeping the carousel loaded with HE, HEAT-FS and ATGMs. This concept was used as the basis for the Object 640 Black Eagle and the Burlak R&D. 5/13

RedEffect says Sosna-U/PNM-T is mounted on the tank, however I don't agree as it would be a very difficult task and the optics are not readily available. It's more likely that they put the empty housing on top of the T-62's real optics. Notice how it's at a slight angle. 6/9
