Having an African passport means arriving from one place and rushing to the embassy of the next place praying your visa will be processed in time for your next trip. Spontaneous travel is a western privilege. I always remind my American friends that their passport has power.

My parents showed me condoms and how to use them when I was 13. I always knew that when I’d eventually have sex how to protect myself. I didn’t have sex till I was 23. But for 10 years I knew how to protect myself. Learning about safe sex does not equate to rushing into sex.

My therapist gave me advice that changed my relationship. She said as we age, we must release them of the duty of being a parent. Interact with them in the same way I do my other adult friends. It brought more empathy. I was able to see them as they are and not their role.

My mom gave me her only laptop the last time I saw her. I make fun of her a lot and how she doesn't understand what I do but for her to give me her laptop because she saw mine was dying means more than she will ever know. I still have her same passcode and profile. I miss her.
