Here, I represented the University of Texas at Austin in Washington DC for the Ignite Speech.
In the heat of the upcoming elections, I hope we can look out for the right qualities in deciding who will lead Nigeria and represent over 200 million of us both at home and abroad.
I had always seen scholarships as things straight-A students got. So I never applied.
Until last year.
When
@Mattihaphyz
told me I had a great profile and could easily get a scholarship.
So although I applied to 5 schools in the US,
I performed my poem "Style" at the Ibadan Aftoliterary Concert last week. It touches on the power of dressing really well because "only an ọmọ àlè uses his left hand to describe his father's home"
I started applying for Summer internships as early as October last year.
In between these months, I applied to over 70 communication-related roles, did 3 interviews, and received innumerable rejection emails, before I finally got offers in April.
One major lesson I learned
It's been 24 weeks since I began my journey as a Graduate teaching assistant and I still get nervous before going to class.
This is despite my previous teaching experience.
And the fact that I enjoy speaking to small or large groups.
And sometimes, I would wish I didn't have
I promised to show my class a video about Nigeria.
Seeing that
@tayoainafilms
is an exceptional storyteller who constantly puts Nigeria on the global map, I found no other suitable reference than his videos.
The class's reactions at the end of the video showed just how
What surprises me about the educational system here is the enthusiasm of the lecturers to give every student an A.
Beyond tests and exams, there are bonus points for class attendance, quizzes, labs, and practice tests. If you miss a test or exam, there's always a way to make up
My first few weeks in Graduate school were tough. I felt like no matter how hard I tried, I could never run out of assignments and daily tasks.
I went really quiet on social media, it was simply impossible to combine anything social with the suicidal workload I already had.
I
I was working on my resume last week, I needed to update it and give it extra shine. Slowly, I went over the “Experience” section starting from 2023 to 2016.
I went past the days when I ran a fashion school that trained over 200 young women in Southwest Nigeria. The focus of
I am always recharging my phone. Once it's 80%, you'll find me plugging it again.
Someone called my attention to this, he asked me why I never allow my phone to discharge before recharging it. He said,
“You're no longer in Nigeria o, nobody is taking light”
I laughed!
If someone had told me that I'd one day tell people over 10 years my junior to call me Kehinde, I would have argued vehemently. As a proud Yoruba girl from southwest Nigeria, I come from a place where we carry respect on our heads like a trophy - literally.
But you see,
My Professor apologized profusely when I respectfully declined his handshake.
He later called me aside and asked if I was comfortable being in an office with a man.
Also, in the student syllabus, there’s a section that says you can leave class if you need to pray.
A Turkish Muslim man is intimidated to shake a lady’s hand, which he refuses to do and explains that he is Muslim, that it is haram and that he didn’t make the rules.
The lady rebuffs, saying she’s also Muslim but that he is a coward.
Türkiye remains highly polarised.
Last week, I began my journey as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Western Michigan University.
In one year, a dream I never dared to have actualized before my eyes.
I am forever grateful for the mentorship and support of
@Mattihaphyz
.
I attended my first in-person communication conference; I was initially nervous about having to meet so many new people, but the experience was worth it.
Before leaving for the conference, our lecturers gave us some form of orientation, which helped prepare us better.
We were
When I heard that Tunde Onakoya was trying to break the Guinness World Record by playing Chess for 58 hours nonstop; I was scared.
It wasn't me who was going to play it.
I didn't need to prepare anything for it.
I would simply sit in the comfort of my home and watch the
It's been 4 weeks since I started my summer role as a Marketing Communication intern. When I asked my employer what made my application stand out, she said she was looking for someone who already had experience and she could see that from my resume.
What she didn't see was me
the doubts were there in the dark corridor of my mind.
I would ask him, "Are you sure I would get this?"
And he would calmly reply Absolutely!"
Months down the line I received my first fully funded offer to study Communication at Western Michigan University.
I would not only be a student but also a lecturer teaching undergraduate students.
Wooooow!!!
My exact reaction.
What I didn't know was that I would get two more funded offers!
Eid abroad is nothing like Eid in Nigeria.
But we make do with the what we have and remain thankful for the gift of life, friends, and family.
Eid Mubarak ❤️

I am thankful to my family, who have always given me an environment in which I can thrive. A safe place where love and support is always served. Thank you ❤️
I am thankful to Allah, my Rabb, who has blessed me with the gift of people, the gift of knowledge, the gift of life.
@Mattihaphyz
Every year, he takes on individuals — some he knows and some he doesn't know — and walks them through how they also can get scholarships abroad; without charging a penny!
I have never seen anyone so ready to mentor others like him.
Whenever I wear dresses I make myself, I often get complimented.
“Your print is so lovely”
“That's a pretty dress!”
Someone even walked up to me once and asked where I bought my outfit from.
But this was never quite the same whenever I wore ready-made clothes I ordered when
Last year, I was selected to undergo training at Lagos Business School.
I was excited about being chosen out of thousands of applicants, but I was also scared.
I would get to meet so many people!
@TheOluwabukunmi
Muslims engaged in peaceful protest and then that's still a problem. Would you have wished they killed the criminal right away? Or burned down houses? Just so your narrative of how 'violent' Muslims are can be justified. You're an evil person Bukunmi.
I tipped my Uber driver and was amused. We had good conversations, he knew a thing or two about Nigeria. So I tipped him and gave him a 5-star rating.
How did I get here?
Truth is, I wouldn't have done that 3 months back. No matter how great the service was, I paid nothing
Most of the feedback I got from my previous video was to improve my background and gadgets.
Background has been improved, gadgets are loading 😇.
Do enjoy this piece 😊.
It's so awkward watching elderly lecturers carry their bags or heavy stuff without reaching out to help them. However, I quickly learned that sometimes what we perceive to be helpful is seen differently by another person.
Last semester, our teaching team organized an in-person
@Mattihaphyz
He would sit up all night and talk to you if he had to. And he would never ask for anything in return.
I am grateful to Professor Dogget, who selflessly recommended me to my schools. He taught me during my Mandela Washington Fellowship in Austin, Texas.
As a content creator in Nigeria, I fantasized about owning an iPhone. I was specific too; I needed the “three-eyed” iPhone. But let's face it, the price is sky-high!
So, I thought, why not start modestly with an XR? Once again, its price was out of reach. So I created content
@Mattihaphyz
I knew right away that I would be honored to have the recommendation of one of the best teachers I have ever come across.
I am thankful to my Undergraduate supervisor, Dr. Adeoti. He is one of the kindest and most approachable supervisors ever.
You will miss the sunlight when you see less of it.
I never got the rave about the sun in the west. It's just the sun.
I see it now.
I walked out of my office building and smiled at the beautiful weather. The sun was out!
After days of dark, cold, and gloomy weather; the
I had a conversation with a young Indian student who works part-time in the tech-support department of Western Michigan University. He's studying for a Master's in Cybersecurity.
I asked him if he'll be going for a PhD and he said no, that he's more eager to begin making money
@Mattihaphyz
I had no doubts he would be willing to recommend me. I was right!
And to
@KehindeMurain
, my Oga, as I fondly call him. I remember, in 2019/2020, he suggested I apply for a scholarship, but I never did. Years down the line, he would be writing me glowing recommendations😊.

This week we had a workshop and the speaker gave us a very interesting exercise. He told us to write our names, first with our left hands and then with our right hands in just 10 seconds.
Then he asked us how well we did with both. I wrote my name twice with my left hand and 6
On my first day of class, something interesting happened.
As the instructor, I was given a card with which I was to open the class for the students. So I swiped, but the door didn't open.
In the hallway were over 15 undergraduate students waiting for their instructor to open
Growing up in South West Nigeria, some words were unspoken taboos. If you called someone a bastard, they would be mad, but they could shave it off.
But calling someone an Ọmọ àlè, although still carries the same meaning(bastard) always had a more intense impact.
Last year, a lady reached out to me to help her review her Statement of Purpose (SOP).
She was applying for residency in the US; seeing how competitive getting matched could be, she needed me to give her SOP a second eye.
She specifically asked me to help her tell a better
I've had 3 videos in my gallery since last week, this one included, but I didn't post them.
I've been breaking out badly for the past few weeks and I didn't like how obvious it was in my videos.
But I heard that the pursuit of perfection is just another excuse for fear.
A random memory about a lovely family that hosted me so warmly.
You know what they say,
"People will forget what you said, but they won't forget how you made them feel"
Good thing about having white teeth is that when your face doesn't show up, it does.
I wrote this in January 2023. I had just received another rejection email and it was getting quite frustrating.
I wasn't marketing my clothing line or fashion school. I had stopped taking new students, I simply wanted to focus on writing.

I was walking down the road and a young man approached me to say his company is giving amazing women like me free sunglasses.
I opened the case and saw this: “Fashion for Female Leaders”.

I just turned down an offer on Upwork because the client changed the terms right after I completed the test article.
He complimented my work and said I was going to be a great addition to his team, yet he slashed the payment in two.
When it comes to goal-setting, don't say
"I plan to read 10 books in 3 months"
Rather, you should say "I will read 3 chapters every day"

I guess we all have different definitions for different things. However, one thing is certain, each culture is a treasure trove of wisdom and beauty waiting to be explored.
And just like that, another one returns to her Lord. 💔

“How was your night?” A four-word question we had been warned never to ask an American.
During the pre-departure orientation for Mandela Washington Fellows in 2018, one of the things we were told was to never ask an American “How was your night”. It is unprofessional and
I worked with someone to help fine-tune her Statement of Purpose (SOP) and here's what I discovered.
Our life story is ours and no one can tell it like us. However, because we are so familiar with it, we tend to overlook or tone some aspects of it down.
You got inspired to
I see it in my classes often - those who show up and those who don't. I notice the difference in their homework when I'm grading too. Those who show up follow the instructions better than those who don't.
I imagine that they might say things like,
“It's not a big deal” or “It's
Nigeria winning the match against South Africa made me realize this.
There is unity at different levels.
Unity isn't just one thing; it's made up of many layers. Even when we're different, something big like a national win can make everyone forget those differences for a
Want to stay motivated always?
Develop a culture that resists complacency.
It's as simple as deciding that no matter how unmotivated you feel; you won't cut corners; you won't relax your standards; you won't overlook any details.
I wrote this September 8, 2017.
Reading it now and thinking, “does this not sound cliche?”
But the message is clear.
We all need mentors. Our mentorship begins from the day we take our first breath.
We see smiling faces, so we learn to smile.
We hear sounds, so we learn to
A lot of people know so little about Islam. It's ludicrous sometimes and sometimes it's not even funny.
There's a chapter in the Quran named after Mary the mother of Jesus.
Would it hurt so bad to sincerely learn about a religion so widely misunderstood?
PHOTOS: 'Mary Mother Of Jesus Christ Mosque' Spotted In Dubai
On Monday, an image of a mosque with the new name, 'Mary Mother of Jesus Christ Mosque', went viral on social media.
The Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed mosque in Al Mushrif, a district in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was renamed

Do you remember when Airtel used to tell such great stories with their ads? I don't know if they still do but I remember I always looked forward to the unique ways they would market their services/products.
You notice how each ad is tailored to the Nigerian audience and a
Finally filling out the form for CNN heroes, and because we have done so many phenomenal things in the last 6 years, I'm not even sure which stories to spotlight anymore 😊
How do you guys narrate the Chess in slums project to someone for the first time?
You need people.
People to mention your name in a room of opportunities.
People to defend you when you're not there.
People whose voices matter, such that when they speak on your behalf, doors open.
This is the grace factor people talk about.
My first week on campus was made easier thanks to a group of kind Nigerians who not only welcomed me but also showed me around.
However, as classes started, everyone got swept into their busy schedules, and the frequency of meeting fellow Nigerians reduced.

The moment I said that I could almost feel the gaze of my Yoruba ancestors drilling a hole into my forehead — “Have you lost your mind!”. I know, because the first mail I got from a student went like this, “Dear Kehinde….”. I flinched for a second and remembered that it was all
I am very easily distracted.
I plan to complete a task in a day and find myself staring into space, thinking about a favorite memory.
Many times, it's the days when I want to be the most productive that I feel the need to check up on old friends.
Here's what has helped me:
when Dr. Abendschein, who I am certain is almost 2 decades older than I am, told me to call him Bryan; I looked at him with surprise. Half expecting that he didn't mean it, I raised my hand in class and said “Excuse me Sir”. He replied, with stark amazement
They respect the values you hold dear. They are genuinely curious about why you do the things you do. They're also very intrigued by your cuisine. I'd open a plate of my home-cooked jollof rice and my American coursemate would say “That smells so good”. And when you offer to
