TLDR: Neurosurgery Sub-I Anki Deck
Due to its positive reception last year, I teamed up with the Anki gurus of the Jefferson AANS to improve my
#neurosurgery
sub-internship deck.
Introducing - The Jeff Deck
1/4
I got into medical school at 5pm on the last day they released acceptances. Today I found out I’m going to be a neurosurgeon.
I could not have done this without the mentorship of the
#neurosurgery
community, who believed in me and supported me. Best of luck to all
#Match2023
My brother is a priest, my sister works in reproductive rights, my other brother is a graphic designer, and I recently became a doctor.
My dad supported us to do whatever we wanted so long as we did it with passion. He made me the man that I am.
Happy father’s day.
Intern year was one of the toughest experiences of my life, but also one of the most gratifying. I want to share some reflections on my attempts to maintain mental wellness. Hopefully some points resonate with the new interns.
Day 1 of 2555 of
#neurosurgery
residency today. Time to drink from the firehose.
Good luck to all the other fresh docs starting their careers right now!
I love this city, I love this community, and I love this program. Beyond excited to be joining the
@TJUHNeurosurg
family for my neurosurgical training. Let’s get after it!
Neurosurgery is wild. In clinic yesterday, four patients tearfully thanked their cerebrovascular surgeon for saving their life. High stakes, high reward. Wow.

My interests include neuro-onc, skull base, playing hoops 🏀, and thrifting. Let’s connect!
I pinned this up about a year ago after a particularly brutal UWorld block. I’m sharing in case it inspires a second year gearing up for Step 1 to do something similar. You will get so many questions wrong. Affirmation and self-love is key.

I made a neurosurgery sub-i Anki deck which is mainly comprised of grading scales, neuroradiology (from dura deck) and miscellaneous info I've gotten wrong during teaching. Feel free to download and disseminate

I’m honored to be applying to

and hope to meet some of you impressive Twitter friends on the trail!
For those who missed the neurosurgery Sub-I bootcamp, we’ve uploaded the high yield lectures given by
@ariamahtabfar
@LeiboldAdam
and
@MikeBaldassari
to YouTube.
I really wish I had these resources as a med student! Take advantage:
Many of you know about Harvey Cushing, the “godfather” of modern neurosurgery, but how many know about the fascinating life of William W. Keen, America’s first neurosurgeon?
A brief🧵on a pioneer:

Special first grand rounds as a neurosurgery intern. Got to hear from the outstanding Jefferson graduates about the wisdom they gained in their 7 year journey.
Be a sponge, learn from every patient, love your co-residents, lean on your friends. Let’s get to work!
In all, I hope you give yourself grace. Intern year is a brutal year in most people’s lives. Give yourself space to make mistakes and be proud that you’re fighting the good fight!
Lmk if you have other mental health tips for the new interns!
First, a little honesty. I lost fitness, I felt exhausted, I made mistakes that hurt people, I forgot birthdays and missed major life events, at times I felt incompetent and incapable.
Wow. Very grateful for 1k followers. I hope to use this platform to help guide the next generation of neurosurgeons.
Feel free to drop questions below or slide in my DMs before residency starts and I have less time!

1 nsgy sub-internship in the books! I cannot thank
@TJUHNeurosurg
enough for the incredible teaching and welcoming culture. I learned so much this past month and it’s just the very beginning!
Extremely excited to be serving on the
@CNS_Update
Executive Committee for Wellness and Resilience this year alongside these incredible colleagues under the leadership of Dr. Williamson!
We have some great programming planned for this year’s meeting so stay tuned!

I tried to minimize complaining. My audience was either, A) other people in my situation, or B) people who likely couldn’t understand.
That said I did still complain a decent amount to my gf so shout out to her!
Celebrating with my new family! I’m lucky to get to spend the next 7 years with this dapper
@TJUHNeurosurg
squad.
Congrats to the incredible graduating chiefs
@RitamGhoshMD
@GoldeyKhanna
and Elina!!
Amazing second annual
@TJUHNeurosurg
sub-I bootcamp today!!! Such an honor meeting motivated med students from around the country/world. Thanks to everyone who joined virtually!!
Neurosurgery is in incredible hands.

I tried to practice gratitude. No matter how bad it got, I still had it better than 99% of the people in the hospital (though I did sometimes daydream about being admitted and just chilling and watching TV…)
Phenomenal morning session of lectures at
#JeffBootcamp
I wish I had this resource before my sub-I’s!! Off to the OR for drilling, playing, suturing, and more!
@ariamahtabfar
@TJUHNeurosurg
I kept a very open mind going into all of my rotations. I loved many of them. But after my clerkship with
@TJUHNeurosurg
I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’m fired up to pursue neurosurgery and extremely grateful for the amazing teachers and mentors I’ve met along the way!!
Threw in my first emergency department EVD today. Intern year is hard, but moments like this remind me why I chose neurosurgery.
Shout out
@ArbazAMomin
for the mentorship and guidance!! 🎯
Had the distinct honor of introducing
@PascalJabbourMD
as the student-elected Keynote Speaker at the
@JeffersonUniv
AOA Research Symposium today.
He gave an entertaining and inspiring speech about his journey and the hard-earned lessons of his neurosurgical career!
Very excited to share our review on glioma stem cells and immunotherapy which was published today. Massive congrats and thank you to co-first-author
@depledge_lisa
for sticking with me on this project for three (!) years!!

I stopped exercising for fitness and focused on exercising for fun instead. There’s no point to feel guilty about getting out of shape when it’s largely out of your control.
Such an inspiring grand rounds and case conference with
@mtlawton
visiting
@TJUHNeurosurg
this morning.
At the beginning of my career, hearing from pioneers like Dr. Lawton makes me want to reach for more!
Had an amazing time with
@HopkinsNsurg
this past month! Exceptional learning experience and a welcoming culture.
Special shout out to my Jefferson buddies
@lphughes26
and Brendan Judy for making me feel at home.
Neurosurgery sub-Interns - I could use your help. I want to crowd source some common “pimp” questions you’ve encountered on your rotations.
Please share in this doc so I can add to our newest edition of the JeffDeck!! Thank you!
I don’t share this to discourage the new interns, but rather to try to normalize these common feelings.
And there were so many positives as well - I made life-long friends, learned more than I’ve ever learned in my life, helped people, and got to do things I’ve only dreamed of.

Although it’s not much, you are FINALLY making money and you don’t have much time to spend it. I indulged in tasty meals, artwork, and new shoes on a whim.
Tonight we got to celebrate Cal. 17 years with
@TJUHNeurosurg
as an NP and FOURTY FOUR (!!!) years as a nurse. Thank you for everything you’ve done for your patients and our program!!
Extremely excited for this event.
If you’re interested in neurosurgery and want to hear from a true luminary, tune in! If you’re in Philly, come say hi!!
Another fantastic neurovascular journal club this morning 📖 learning about ARISE 1, a multi-disciplinary expert consensus on aneurysm diagnosis and management led by
@StavTjoumakaris
This paper is extremely useful for practitioners and students alike!
Much of the statistics I have learned in research has come from trial and error (emphasis on error). I’ve been searching for something like this boot camp. If you’re interested, sign up with the QR code!
Thanks
@anantnaik12
for the opportunity!
Optimal timing to resume anticoagulation after Intracranial Hemorrhage is a controversial topic ! Our latest paper reviewing the topic , definitely in need of a RCT. A shout out to our star research fellow

Thoughtful, moving piece by

about the recent tragedy in his city.
Even neurosurgeons, who know chaos and travesty intimately, are in disheartened disbelief with this perpetual cycle of violence.

Very cool to see our Jeff deck mentioned in this publication as a useful neurosurgical resource. Stay tuned for a new and improved version 3 this winter/spring!
You’ve heard of trigeminal neuralgia, but have you heard of SUNCT (Short-lasting Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing)?
Check out our case report to learn more ⬇️
We present the case of a 71-year-old SUNCT patient refractory to medical therapy successfully treated with SRS delivered to the trigeminal nerve root and SPG:

With the right determination, it’s possible!
Forever grateful to everyone that supported me along the way. a special shout out to my brother
@KeenanPiper1
for ever putting the idea into my head that I could be a neurosurgeon. And a HUGE congrats to you as well.

for their healthcare appreciation week! I made a basketball shot in the cafeteria today and won a Keurig and a seemingly lifetime supply of coffee???
Extremely excited to be introducing an amazing mentor and inspiring leader,
@PascalJabbourMD
, in a few weeks as the keynote speaker for our AOA Research Symposium.
If you are in Philadelphia, come for the speech and stay for the science!
Super proud of Jefferson’s AANS e-board this year. Because of this motivated crew, we’re offering new programs/lectures/mentoring opportunities in hopes of spreading the word about neurosurgery and supporting our student body!
Watch out for these guys on the trail!
Super pumped to be helping out with

I ran, I learned, I presented, and I celebrated (a healthy amount). Thanks for the memories and the inspiration!
I don’t mind that they’re “low impact,” I love writing case reports. They’re a great way to improve writing skills, learn about an interesting case, and build a relationship with an attending!
Extremely pleased to share our manuscript which demonstrates that, in our cohort, there is no recurrence free survival benefit in radiating the meningioma dural tail.
Massive thanks the co-authors who stuck with this project for 3 years.

I’m grateful for the faculty that invite med students like myself to the lab to learn anatomy and practice basic surgical techniques. Today was a midline suboccipital craniotomy to check out cerebellar anatomy! Spoiler: it was SO cool.
