To the anonymous reviewer - Heart ya biggg!!
An advice that never gets old while looking for

tissues. Glad to include my own drawings in the figure section 😊
Time to sign off for the vacation! Happy 2019, Twitteratisss!! 😍
We're celebrating 🎉 100 years of Wolbachia 🎉 with a new Journal Club activity! On this day 100 years ago, Hertig & Wolbach submitted the first description and images of Wolbachia for publication.
Four years in the making and finally got ACCEPTED! It was all worth it! More than anything, the journey highlighted how crucial a solid peer-review process is to transform the quality of your work. Won't have it another way. Stay tuned for further Sciency updates!
@Symbionticism
Get urself a lab and a PI who keeps on pouring fancy goodies in ur bucket more so often than u could imagine! Thanks,
@WolbachiaProj
for magnets and journals made of recycled apple peels (they even smell like 🍏!) &
@Symbionticism
for symbiotic Coasters & ☕️ mugs. Delighted! 🤩
We have a postdoc position to study gut microbiota colonization

Nothing more rewarding than seeing your undergrads achieving heights!
@MahipKalra
won the best UG Research Prize today! The lab is so proud of you, Mahip.
@JediShropshire
you were hugely missed on this occasion!
#VU2022
Fun fact learnt from today’s dissections: Mosquitoes can have more than 2 spermatheca (sperm storage organs). Apparently, this number can determine females’ polyandry status as these females are able to store sperm of different mates in different spermatheca.

👇brought back memories of my PhD supervisor sitting for hours n editing my first-ever written MS in front of me, explaining the context of changes he made. Though it was embarrassing at time seeing my whole doc turn red (lol) but was the only way I cud learn academic writing.
I don't edit papers my direct trainees send me with tracked changes - I edit live in front of them in a meeting. Why?
1. forces you to find time to do it
2. makes you accountable for the quality of your edits
3. makes the edits a discussion
4. articulate why you make an edit
Weekend was full of interesting

Structural and mechanistic insights into the complexes formed by Wolbachia cytoplasmic incompatibility factors
In short, we studied natural host-Wolbachia associations and their interaction with diff. RNA viruses. Combined with several other factors controlling Wolb densities, we show that not only
#Wolbachia
limit viral replication, certain viruses can also negatively regulate Wolbachia.
Very proud of this review from
@Britt_3Phage
@Symbionticism
and I on CI's history, genetics, cytology, biochemistry, diversity, and future directions motivated by historical models. We hope this to be useful to those new and familiar to CI biology.
Sara Cherry shows that gut microbiota plays a critical role in defending against viruses in Drosophila and that age dependent dysbiosis increases the viral susceptibility

As an immigrant, I feel blessed workin in a lab full of US citizens, whr they discuss such sensitive issues n try to come up wd potential solutions (unless hands are tied). Just today only, thanks
@JediShropshire
for checking on me if I'm doing ok wd my visa status🤗
#VisaBan
Do US citizens understand how stressful it is to be an immigrant scientist in the US?
Far from family/friends, never ending visa bureaucracy & payments, constant fear of not being allowed back in the US, or being forced to leave your home/job/PhD due to some ban

FISH rRNA probes are a great alternative too. I used Stellaris probes targeting 16S-23S rRNA of Wolbachia during my PhD work and worked like a charm in nearly all of the Dros tissues tested. Example below.
@Symbionticism
Indeed, there can be sperm competition and females can actually control the offspring paternity. It’s fascinating!
How common depends on mosquito species. But exceptionally, earwigs can have even 10 spermatheca 🤯
