Train to Busan is based on VERY Korean things like culture, history and class that is specific to Korea. Remaking it in the US will strip it of the things that made it special. Just watch the original.

Saw a tiktok saying that more than any romantic relationship, the true deepest human connection is being in cahoots with someone. And I felt that in my bones.
Y'all wanna "promote diversity"? Here are some Diverse YA Retellings BY POC authors:
PRIDE (Pride & Prejudice)
ASH (Cinderella)
THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN (Hades & Persephone)
THE WRATH AND THE DAWN (1001 Nights)
ONCE & FUTURE (King Arthur)
SCAVENGE THE STARS (Count of Monte Cristo)
The 2 sides of the Asian racism coin gives me whiplash. One second we're the model minority who're taking all the college slots. Then we're quiet, subservient workers who can't speak English. It's literally just whatever works at the moment to boost white supremacy best.
“The point of this process isn’t to force yourself to eliminate things. It’s really to confirm how you feel about each and every item that you possess"-Marie Kondo
From now on, this is the only convo that I'll pay attention to when it comes to Marie Kondo
For those who don't know, many Koreans had to flee to Busan (one of the last safe havens) during the Korean war as the front line was constantly shifting (my grandparents were among those who fled Seoul for Busan)
Busan is symbolic as the only city never captured during the war.
*Whispers* Some can't afford to get published before 30 bc they have to think of what will give them a sustainable income/health insurance. This is disproportionately a concern for POC & disabled creators...so yea the pub before 30 thing has more implications than you might think
Like I don't get it, just make your OWN train zombie movie. Don't say it's a remake of Train to Busan when it's really NOT going to really be. Like put those zombies in the MTA or something. The MTA is the perfect setting for a horror film bc the MTA is constantly horrifying us
Sorry to dip back into the BIPOC POV convo but I see lots of white writers asking how come BIPOC are "allowed" to write white characters. And first, we're not "allowed" many HAD TO in order to get published 3-4 years ago. And, secondly, we're "able" to write white POV because...
A weird thing that every diaspora kid grapples with is that their parents spent their whole lives fighting to prove they were American/Western enough and now we have to fight to prove we're Korean/[insert ancestral country] enough. Like a never-ending ping-pong game of fitting in
Usually I'm bad at self promo, but today I'm just gonna do it. If you want a YA romance with Korean characters who don't self-hate, then my debut WICKED FOX is an angsty K-drama inspired paranormal romance. Also lots of food (sequel out 8.18!)
#WickedFox
It is NOT the responsibility of Asian or BIPOC authors to educate people with our FICTIONAL & FANTASY books. Yes, we are inspired by our cultural history. But also YES, we are allowed to *make stuff up* just like orcs & elves didn't actually live in medieval Europe...
Hi! Reminder that JFG is a work of fiction & fantasy. It’s not historical & is not meant to be used as an educational tool to teach people mandarin or Chinese culture. It’s important to decolonize our minds from thinking that we need to expend mental, emotional & physical labor /
The UN has called for a ceasefire. While it is not legally binding, you can use it to call the White House or your representatives and demand a ceasefire right now. If you're averse to phone calls you can go to and email them with the form
...we grew up reading almost exclusively white POV characters. And being told only white history. And shown how complex white characters are. (I read like conservatively 20-40 books per year since I was 11. So let's say I read ~500 different white POVs before I was pubbed)...
So yea, that's why BIPOC can write white POVs without all the extra research we ask white writers to do when writing BIPOC POVs. I mean I'm not even asking you to read 500 BIPOC POV books first, so I really think I'm being nice lol
🎉🎉🎉📚SO RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED to share my news with y’all! My

Isn't it so interesting that the two sections of publishing dominated by non-cis-male voices (kidlit and romance) are the ones that "literary authors"/outsiders seem to hate on the most...
Just an FYI if a BIPOC person gives you a note on a potentially harmful aspect of your story (even if it seems small) don't think/say "Well, I don't know if this matters/will actually hurt someone" because it HAS probably already hurt someone, the person who pointed it out...

But always always always, we're faceless. We're the other. We're tokens. No matter the mechanism they use to describe us. We are not full humans to them. That's how their racism works to make our pain less worthy of attention. That's how their systems keep our words unheard.
Be careful when you want to criticize a "trope" you think you're starting to see "too much of" esp when it's an innately BIPOC concept. Yes, we're seeing more Asian/African/Latinx myth & BIPOC romcom. But remember, what is only a handful seems like a lot bc we're used to seeing 0

Some suggestions for white writers writing Korean characters:
- my eyes are eye-shaped not almond shaped
- don't call me a doll
- It's not funny to ask "which Korea" we're from
- liking k-pop doesn't make you a Korea expert
- Also, just *don't* write Korean characters...........
A problem I have w/ the after-the-fact diversity tack-ons is that these characters & ANIMALS were written as NOT POC. But now that they're being made POC their behavior doesn't sync up. Like Wormtail MILKED Nagini to feed gross baby Voldemort in HP4 and now she's an Asian woman?!
@Micankusi
It was commentary right after the Sewol ferry disaster & mishandling of MERS. Also symbolic of the flight of Koreans to Busan during the Korean war. Also class dynamics in place between Gong Yoo's upper-middle class character, the businessman & the working class passengers
I already owned masks before 2020 bc all my trips to Seoul (esp during allergy/fine dust season) but I never wore masks in the US bc I was scared it would "other" me. But honestly masks have always been a considerate thing to wear when sick + they're useful against allergies
KINGDOM OF THE BLAZING PHEONIX/FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS (Snow White)
BLANCA & ROJA (Snow-White and Rose-Red & Swan Lake)
A BLADE SO BLACK (Alice in Wonderland)
Ok, fine I'm going to shamelessly self-promo since my books are based on classic Korean mythology:
WICKED FOX - A fantasy reimagines Korean myth of the gumiho, 9-tailed fox that becomes a beautiful girl & eats men
VICIOUS SPIRITS (sequel) -retells dokkaebi, Korean goblin, myths
Also, hey we retell our own myths too! Check those out to "celebrate diversity"!
SERPENT'S SECRET (Bengali folktales)
GHOST SQUAD (Dominican Myths)
SHADOW OF THE FOX (Japanese Kitsune)
A THOUSAND BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS (Various Asian myths)
ARU SHAH series (Hindu mythology)
OF CURSES AND KISSES (Beauty and the Beast)
DOROTHY MUST DIE (Wizard of Oz)
NEVER LOOK BACK (orpheus/eurydice retelling)
THE MAGNOLIA SWORD (Mulan)
SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW (Roman Holiday, yea it's a movie, but I'm counting it!)
I told her multiple times about problematic things she did & those concerns were never properly addressed. I also experienced microaggressions that made me feel unsafe as a POC.
I am still traumatized from that time.
Therefore, I do not accept this empty apology.
Stop writing your western-lens, skewed, weak a$$ versions of Asian male (presenting) characters 2020.
Like HOW can anyone imply that an Asian male is anything but strong and beautiful when we know these people exist???:
Recently, my new editor started out by asking what accommodations I need. It was lovely. As a ND author(& editor) something I think about a lot is it would help if the agent/editor was the 1st one to bring up any needs for accommodations as standard practice w/ all new authors...
IT'S HERE! The cover reveal to VICIOUS SPIRITS, the sequel to WICKED FOX! Things you can expect:

LOL @ a self-identified "white, straight, able-bodied author" telling marginalized authors what an event made FOR US should be about. (e.g. she wanted to participate in DVPit & wrote a whole blog post justifying it after saying she was aware she shouldn't) BTW she DID participate
I know it might be jarring to see so many promotion tweets for that B&N preorder sale, but it's largely because authors have been told in the last year that if we don't have the preorder
#s
stores won't stock our books. And as many debut/midlist/BIPOC authors don't get much...
How to NOT treat WOC like trash in fiction:
-is she only there to further arc of white MC?
-is she "owned" by a man or white char?
-is she treated as less than human?
-is she only rep of her ppl?
-are you adding their diversity after-the-fact?
If yes to any of these, rewrite.
THIS. No story is unique.
Before HP there was Sabriel
Before Hunger Games there was Battle Royale
Before ToG there was The Graceling and His Fair Assassin
Before City of Bones there was Tithe
Before GoT there was LOTR
And after these books there will be many more...
Say it with me:
Every school setting is not a Harry Potter rip off
Every competition to the death is not a Hunger Games rip off
Every assassin story is not a ToG rip off
Every urban fantasy is not a City of Bones rip off
Every political fantasy is not a GoT rip off
Do. Not. Name. People. As. Guilty. If you "Saw a tweet thread 2 years ago, but I don't fully remember it all." Because you are messing with people's literal reputations and livelihood. This isn't a game and y'all need to stop treating it like it is.
Stop implying that you somehow have ownership over Korean identity because you listen to K-pop/watch K-dramas challenge...
(Almost every Korean American I know has been told by a non-Korean "Oh I guess I'm more Korean than you" bc they watch/listen to K-insert-media)
Also isn't it so interesting that we're not [insert ancestral country] enough to tell our own stories without getting push back by "purists" but we ARE POC enough when we're denied our humanity by systemic racism. ISN'T IT INTERESTING.
I wish joining a specific community in Twitter came with a manual. Like "Wanna join Book Twitter? Here are the biggest scandals from the last 5 years & what we learned from them. Pls study before participating." But, in reality, I know it wouldn't help bc no one reads manuals lol
Being a diaspora writer is very apparent when I put Korean phrases into my books written in English bc I use them exactly how we did growing up, inserted into English sentences. But my fam westernized our Korean. So it's not quite Korean & not quite English. AKA story of my life
I think those saying "YA is over" are looking at things wrong.
YA has been exponentially growing for 20 yrs & is starting to plateau. So what's actually an evening out of the category is what some mistake as “dying out.” But NOTHING can sustain a huge growth pattern indefinitely
Sometimes, I get so tired about how those of us who are most marginalized end up fighting *each other* about what's the right way to seek representation and equity. It just distracts us from the actual fight, which is against the system that marginalizes us in the first place...
Privilege - When a white/cis/het male author wants to write a YA about a white/cis/het male MC & YA gatekeepers say "GREAT we don't have enough of these!" but when a POC, non-cis, non-het author wants to write about themselves publishing says, "We already have one of those."
You tell us that if we don't like the oppressive systems in publishing to go build our own spaces.
So we did.
And now you're trying to invade our safe spaces because you see that our stories actually *are* wanted
(not only wanted but hungered for)
VICIOUS SPIRITS is out TODAY👺👻🇰🇷💙!

For those saying "but what about when people use medieval European settings" as an excuse for blatant Orientalism:
"A dominant European political ideology created the notion of the Orient in order to subjugate and control it"
Also:
Wearing a mask is not a political statement nor is maintaining social distance. They’re signs that you’re willing to exhibit common sense & good health practices. But apparently a lot of Americans disagree—to the point of sickness and death.

Ignoring the fact that it should have been about KStew leaving her toxic relationship & getting with Aubrey Plaza & all other problems with THE HAPPIEST YEAR aside. Do they HONESTLY expect us to believe Jane got an agent AND book deal AND the book came out all within a year?!
I've known & know so many amazing teens who've never said repeated racist or homophobic or transphobic or islamophobic comments. It's not age that makes someone a bigot. And when it's so many times, so gleefully? No one has to trust someone like that just on their word.

VICIOUS SPIRITS comes out TOMORROW! I really enjoyed writing this book. It's about friendship and the lengths we'll go to for it. It's about coming to terms with the pain of our past. It's about seeing people for who they really are. And it's about love (in all forms) 👺👻🇰🇷♥️
In 2019, my YA fantasy WICKED FOX comes out! (6/25/2019)

LOVE Ke Huy Quan's story bc it proves that no matter how you started out, no matter how long it's been since your journey began, it's never too late to continue pursuing your dream. So often as creatives we're told we HAVE to always stay relevant but we can take our time!
Promised myself that for every sad/painful thing I tweet about what's happening to the AsAm community, I'm also going to tweet something happy/positive about us.
So here are books by Korean authors that I love & you should too (yes my book's in there lol)🇰🇷

Sometimes I think about how TV/Movies can get basic real-world facts wrong (e.g. medicine, publishing, any skilled field) & people are like "It's for the drama!"
But if an author is even slightly off on a small detail people are all "well actually..."
(it's x10 for BIPOC authors)
I'm just going to QT myself because this is how I feel about that discourse of whether white authors can write BIPOC POV characters. Until we have HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of BIPOC characters by BIPOC authors, I don't really think "slots" should be taken by non-BIPOC authors
I'm watching Avatar The Last Airbender for the first time (ever) and I already hate Zuko's dad for banishing him. Is this a normal reaction? Is this how I'm supposed to feel? I'm literally only like 8 episodes in lol
#AvatarTheLastAirbender
When people criticize others for liking a thing, they act like we don't realize the thing we love is imperfect. People often love a piece of art despite its imperfection (some love it bc of the imperfections). Also, let people love what they love if they're not hurting anyone...
Hot Take: Why BIPOC should be paid MORE than their non-BIPOC counterparts in pub rn. They do the job of non-BIPOC PLUS:
-explain racism/bias to coworkers/bosses
-asked to review colleagues work & point out said bias
-asked to "speak for"(all)BIPOC
-endure microaggressions at work
We're so often dismissed when we raise concerns about whether our identity is handled accurately & with respect. We're told we're nitpicking. Or being sensitive. Then stuff like this happens. We're not bringing this stuff up bc it's fun, but bc we've experienced erasure before!
Well. Turns out SOMEONE in the production chain lied, bc the final product was clearly done by a Japanese person who could not speak Mandarin. When I raised this issue, my publisher said it was the VA's team that assured them the VA could handle Mandarin (they cannot) 5/9
As someone who ❤️ data & is in an industry that is averse to analyzing its own data (publishing). I appreciate the DOJ trial for FINALLY giving us some hard numbers about publishing. Here’s what I’ve learned about publishing by the numbers so far:
People out here acting like celebs like Prince Harry didn't get $30Million for ONE book. And I'm pretty sure those pubs didn't go under & other authors there still got marketing. Honestly, can't believe I'm being forced to defend PUBLISHERS. I resent y'all for doing this to me...

Here's the thing... $100K IS a "fairly small advance" when it's paid out in 4ths or 5th over 2-3 yrs. AND STILL, majority of authors I know don't even get this much as an advance. So if publishing ACKNOWLEDGES $100K is small, why are they offering less?

Hey, let's stop comparing every single Asian led book to Crazy Rich Asians. Listen, I loved CRA, I had to
sit for a bit after the credits to cry happy tears. BUT just because a story has Asians in it doesn't mean it's the same as CRA. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
