I’m just a girl, standing in front of evangelicalism, asking it to protect women from abuse without resorting to purity culture rules that make it impossible for us to have careers.

We were talking about the Last Supper in children’s church (we did Palm Sunday last week so they’d know what was going on today) and one little girl said she was scared for Jesus. Another girl leaned over and whispered, “I’ve heard this story before. He comes back.” I cried.

My favorite thing about studying biblical languages is the way it won’t let me forget that Scripture was written in a language & region & culture completely foreign to mine. There were no white Americans present. We are the “ends of the earth,” not the main characters.

Another reminder that children’s ministry is not the “easy” one: after teaching in Sunday school today, on Noah’s ark, the first question was: “When they got off the ark, were there lots of dead bodies all over the place?” Guess what every question after that was about.

The idea that America has been systematically racist is an idea entirely compatible with Scripture’s depiction of sin and human communities. But it is entirely incompatible with the story America tells of itself. And a lot of Christians have believed America instead.

A fourth grade girl told me today that the Greek word for “angel” also means “messenger.” When I asked her how she knew that, she said: “I study the Bible as much as I can. I’m going to be a preacher when I grow up.” It might seem small, but I could have wept.

I wish we would think of masks like a spiritual discipline: I am wearing a mask as a way to physically love my neighbor in a specific way, but also as a small act that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, might form me into someone who sacrifices much more for the sake of others.

Every discussion of "biblical womanhood" should include the fact that in Luke 1, two pregnant women celebrate their new motherhood by passionately discussing the coming overthrow of every earthly empire.

Y'all I just got a survey from Liberty that asked for a "marketable achievement" from my time at Liberty. I COULD NOT HELP MYSELF. "My time at Liberty prepared me to write, think, and speak about political idolatry in the church. I am fairly certain that this was unintended."

The line in the new God’s Not Dead trailer where the pastor is told not to die on the hill of home schooling and he says “Our whole faith started because a man chose a hill he was willing to die on” somehow manages to illustrate at least 15 things wrong with evangelicalism.

If you grew up hearing a lot about a daily “quiet time,” and reading the Bible became a duty you constantly felt guilty about, know this: finding joy in Scripture is a better goal than consistency or length of time or seriousness. Seek delight! That too is faithfulness.

Pastors, teachers: Here's the real impact of a sexist joke you make when you're "just kidding." -Women don't trust you. -They don't trust your theology. -They actually struggle to focus on the rest of what you're saying because they're too focused on how messed up it was.

Do you know how difficult it is, when you’ve been hurt - really, deeply hurt - by your church to show up again in a new one, to risk that hurt again, to fumble in a new tradition you are unfamiliar with, to serve others and receive from them? No one should dare criticize that.

The only kind of pyramid scheme I’m interested in is books. You read one, it tells you about 20 others you need to read. You start with the first one from that list, it tells you to read 50 more. It never ends, you just read books until you die, never finishing a single list.

I know everyone saying “We need doctrine *and* kindness” means something good and true, but I’m tired of it. Scripture is full of direct, unambiguous instructions about how we treat people. That is doctrine. You cannot have correct doctrine and mistreat people. It’s impossible.

It is almost frustratingly repetitive in Scripture: do not fear. So you cannot stoke fear in a godly way. You cannot drum up people's anxieties for the glory of God. Fearmongering on behalf of a "good cause" does not make it right. We should be vigilant about this.

I need y’all to know that the degree to which these men on the internet obsess over Beth Moore is the degree to which some men in all kinds of churches obsess over any woman in their church with gifts she refuses to hide and a mind she continues to use.

So it turns out that when I finally started attending a church that celebrates Communion every week, I cry every week. Every week.

If you are the person who cannot do small talk, who is always ready to dive into a serious topic, who feels like you’d weigh everyone else down if you talked about the injustice in the world as often as they want to - I love you and I see you and your passion is a gift.

I got to my parents’ house last night for Christmas. They got a package after I got here that they were all giggly and secretive about. This morning they *very dramatically* entered the kitchen…wearing matching @HolyPostPodcast shirts. 🙄

This is your semi-weekly reminder that the noise and wiggles from kids in church are a GIFT and not a problem. Also: if we treat those noises and wiggles as inconvenient distractions to avoid, we won’t just push kids out, but lots of other people made in the image of God.

Just a reminder that "Believe women" does not mean that women always tell the truth so believe everything any woman says. But it does mean that when many credible women are telling you the same story about abuse, and a few powerful men are denying it, BELIEVE THE WOMEN.

It is not gossip to tell the truth about abuse to people who can do something to stop it or to people who need to be protected from it. What an evil lie from the pit of hell dressed up as godliness.
