Dear people hiring devs,
Emotional intelligence isn't a "nice to have" item. You're building tools for people; understanding and caring for them is a prerequisite.
Sincerely, me.
It's 2019 and I'm still reading shit takes about how women "aren't biologically built for tech."
Guys, if you don't help to dispel this garbage, then you're part of the ongoing problem.
Owning a Mac means clicking "Remind Me Tomorrow" every single day of your life until you die.
Don't @ me with "just run the update" shit. I know. My statement is still true.
Okay, so I love "struggle marks." These are everyday markings and indicators of some sort of failure (missed key hole scrapes, handprints on a glass door you pull, coffee splashes by a door, slip trails on a snowy path, etc.)
If you find them, send them my way. 😆
So we were at the bar of a Mexican restaurant tonight when I overheard someone ask the bartender for the wifi info...
Bartender said the wifi name was 'taco'...
I asked the obvious question: is the password quesadilla sensitive?
Omg you should have heard the groans 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@chrissyteigen
But wait -- everyone around me benefits from my anti-pickles stance. I hand them off immediately the second I get my plate in restaurants. Pickle lovers win! There's always one in the group, too.
After all these years in software, I wish people would shift from asking me "can we do this?" to "should we do this?"
We "can" do a lot, but holy hell -- rethink if we need to do half of it. It's so often a "nope!" that's realized wayyyy too late.
Gotta reveal a secret.
So COVID tests weren't the only things I tested positive for lately. 🙃
I told my family the morning before the SCOTUS leaks. 🙃
I'm fired up and ready to fight like hell for our rights while this lil asskicker cooks. 🔥
We're in so many messes because we value the perception of progress and quick fixes over the identification of root causes and sustainable solutions. Endless layers of bandaids and yet I still hear "Cool! How about we go faster?"
It often catches up and costs way more later.
Nailed it. I've had to fix:
- Parents' sound bar
- Parents' cable box
- Parents' router
- Mom's smart watch
- Dad's iPad
- The garbage disposal
I've been home for 23 hours.
In laws asked how my new job has been and mentioned how my demeanor seems lighter, happier. It hits harder coming from people that know me well.
So I'll consistently remind ahead of a new year: the impact of a bad fit permeates beyond the work hours. Find a better one. ❤️
Two Fridays ago, I mentioned learning about a group of people in my world that tested positive.
Last Friday, one member was admitted to the hospital.
Today, that person has died. 11 days.
Wear your mask. Practice social distancing. Avoid this heartbreaking, lonely ending.
Sent my hair pic to my family.
Mom immediately had concerns.
Dad said he liked it if my husband did. 😑
Nephews were big fans and took my siblings' phones to express their approval.
Here's to the next gen being raised without these weird reservations. Do what makes you happy.
@UberFacts
Ughhhh please don't frame privileged and powerful individuals like some resilient, humble leaders because of lil cutesy tests like this. It's gross and lacking the context of the safety nets he has in life.
I'm nervous to do this, but I want to *finally* talk about my past weeks. Staying quiet is hard for me, but my safety came first. Now, I hope to reclaim my voice and start a conversation. I want to talk about the paradox of safety in tech:
I still see a bunch of "y tho?" responses --
Here's the thing. This one seems harmless at face value, but phrases like this one *paired with power* == manipulation, invalidation, gaslighting, etc.
Acknowledge the power dynamics around you if you're hellbent on using it.
It's official.
I'll soon be a Product Manager at
@pluralsight
! I have a lot of thoughts about this journey and finding a new career home during a pandemic, but for now I'm going to simply encourage you to enjoy our

goodness. :)
Onwards!
Software pals, can you discuss your relationship with math in your coding journey? I'd like to have a thread to reference when I run into folks that say, "oh but I'm no good at math." Thanks!
The term "non-technical" bugs me especially when used for people in roles that communicate the details of software at any given point of functionality.
Things that happen in tech: discrimination, gatekeeping, gaslighting, manipulation, intimidation, stalking, isolation, appropriation, misrepresentation, white feminism, homogeneity, etc. etc. etc.
Things that ruffle status quo: swearing.
I wasn't going to dwell on my day off, but I can't stop thinking about it.
I was told I seem like I belong more in HR because of my passion for the "extracurriculars" of D&I.
I'm so tired of this pattern in software.
We need to acknowledge humans to build for humans.
I hit the damn jackpot. Minimal pain, no complications, my cord wasn't an issue at all 😌, and my little Felix Michael was delivered by a Dr. King on MLK Jr. Day.
This theme is lighting me up. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dear [younger generation title],
Do whatever you can to decouple your sense of self worth and identity from your job. Mistakes were made. Learn from us.
Sincerely,
Millennials
Lolol at the people getting so angry at meteorologists. People, really? Mother Nature is only getting more pissed at us and a scorned woman will not show her cards like that. I do not envy their jobs.
#Dorian2019
To the folks entering the software realm that told themselves they have to be good at math:
I am flexing WAY more math skills to sort out these goddamn election projections than I ever have in my software/coding career lololol
Great point (and a reminder I need) from
@KimCrayton1
While it's easy to laugh, we have to beware the ways we offer infantile treatment to grown white men that are EXTREMELY powerful and dangerous.
Woke up to a mini text lecture from my my mother about my social media use and hahahahahahaha
Imagine giving a fuck about swearing online in this moment.
I'm getting a lot of "just ignore it; you're great!" tweets in here. I assure you my confidence is solid. The fact THESE ASSHOLES GET HIRED is what inspired my tweets.
Stop giving these mindsets space to breathe *and thrive.* Until then, I won't ignore how complicit you are.
Decades of toxicity and unnecessary frustration in tech yet one white dude gets a conference ticket revoked and you all flip. 🙄🙄🙄
This is why we continue to push for change.
@Tony__Heller
@tipado
No. Systems that we all (transcending sides here) live by *do* classify by race and some folks are attempting to acknowledge that. Pretending race isn't a factor is ignorant at best.
BREAKING: someone drew a giant dick on the frozen Irondequoit Bay that you can see from the 104 bridge and I think I have to get in the car to witness its glory.
It’s not just the conference, you know. That’s just a sideline thing. They’re going after livelihoods, reputations, friends, and families.
Beware. They will come for you one day.
Hey, new hires in any given company!
Let's see -- you might be feeling like you're not pulling your weight, that there's so much to learn, that you're not sure where to start, and that the firehouse of info keeps getting stronger.
But let me be first to remind...
Woke up to a lecture from a family member about "coming together with all my enemies or I'm part of the problem."
hehe
hahaha
HAHAHAHAHA
SURE!
BUAHAHA
Anyways, I don't need coffee now.
I asked what else the parrot (African grey) does. She knows how to:
- Make phone calls to housemates
- Ask for NPR
- Ask for music
- Turn on the vacuum (mentioned)
- Turn OFF music if she doesn't want it
- "And sometimes she fucks up my trivia"
🤣😂🤣😂🦜
Ugh the "WFH doesn't work" people are *loud* this week. SO OKAY! Go enjoy your morning traffic, fluorescent lights, and still being on zoom from a cubicle -- nobody cares that you love shit, but y'gotta stop lying about the alternative not working.
And sometimes, a birthday lands on a wild ride of a Wednesday in the middle of a pandemic and all you can do is cover yourself in neon lighting and sip a good scotch out of a glass you've yet to pack.
34 beta release. Ship it.
"Last week was terrible. We started with policy changes that felt simple, reasonable, and principled, and it blew things up culturally in ways we never anticipated."
Oh my goddddd they're playing the bumbling bullshit card.
My white friends are showcasing how they're anxious for a break after what's likely their first time feeling the negative impacts of systems that otherwise benefit them.
Repeat after me: "I will not let myself fall back into my complicit comfort zone."
Oh, I see some of you have gotten to experience this one in the wild. 🙃
I rant about this one at least once a year so you've been warned. This latest instance was fueled by a former colleague's *documented* awful experience after which a manager reminded the value. So gross.
