I don't normally touch the discourse, but Romance is not just vibes. Romance is a difficult to master, requiring deep and robust character work, and blending it with fantasy takes a deft hand. Romantasy is not a vibes driven genre, and I hate how folks dismiss it so readily!

This entire thread. I don't have a day job. I am chronically ill and disabled, for me it's a choice of day job OR writing. I physically cannot have it both ways. This industry works to keep people like me -- BIPOC, queer, trans, disabled -- out. And we need to fix that.

As a queer person, as a trans person, this is something I think about a lot. It doesn't escape my notice to see this blowback just as we get a seat at the table. Our existence is already sanitized enough--we should be able to express ourselves as fully sexual beings.

It's disingenuous to claim that writers who explore sex are only doing so for shock value or to chase a trend. As personal as sex is, it's routinely leveraged in the public arena to drive policy and social mores. Sex deserves to be depicted in fiction as part of that conversation
