The Deep Meaning of Selamat Hari Raya Eidul Fitri Have you ever wondered why, at the end of the fasting month, Malays would greet their families and friends, "Selamat Hari Raya Eidul Fitri"? There are five words in there. Three from Arabic and two are from Sanskrit.

A legend, a thinker and a kind soul who will be remembered by generations to come. If I am asked to name one person who inspired me during my youthful days, it will be him. May Allah forgive Siddiq Fadzil, raise his ranks, exalt his status, and grant him Jannah.

Are you stressed? Here are the solutions found in works on psychology in the Islamic tradition. Muslim psychologists in the premodern period divided the essence of human beings into four components: the body, the mind, the heart, and the soul.

The key to consistency in writing is consistency in reading and taking notes. Make it a habit to write whatever you read, no matter how insignificant the points may seemingly. Reflect over what you've written. It is a bit like cycling. You will keep moving when you pedal.

So much has been written about Naquib Al-Attas. But one aspect of his thought that has been rarely discussed is his perpetual optimism. The future, in his assessment, will not only be shaped by intellectuals and leaders. It is in the hands and hearts of the sincere youth.

The Malay-Indonesian scholar, Hamka (d. 1981), once remarked that modern Muslims do not suffer from the lack of thinking. They think a lot. They read a lot. But their minds are frozen (beku). Because what they think about each day are mostly mundane things.

Guru dipertuhankan. Ide-nya disembah.

"Eid" is Arabic for "celebration". While "Fitri", also from Arabic, points to "purity", implying a return to that state. When we put them together into a greeting, we get a super combo that shows the creative genius of the Malays!

"Selamat" is from the Arabic word "salamah" which means "a state of peace and happiness." "Hari" means "day" in Sanskrit. "Raya" also from Sanskrit connotes "something big or significant".

Para pemikir Islam zaman dahulu menghormati guru melalui beberapa cara. Mensyarahkan pemikiran guru mereka.

Advice to the novice. How can I learn things fast? Be humble. How can I achieve success in life? Be humble. How can I be the best in my vocation? Be humble. Without humility, you will be fire that burns out quickly. So remain humble even when you become somebody someday.

Nothing is permanent. People come and go. Things grow and fade. The point then is to keep on moving. To keep on achieving. To drop what is unnecessary. To ignore whatever that distracts the heart. To cherish all that leads to life's ultimate aim: happiness.

Most scholars understand Tawhid as the "Oneness of God." Osman Bakar, a shaper of modern Islamic thought goes much further. Tawhid is a recognition of the Unity of Knowledge; divine and humanly. Great minds in Islamic history used this idea to build a universal civilization.

Reading fuels writing. To make this happen, read anything you encounter in a few ways. First, read to grasp the overall idea or thrust. Second, read to identify gaps. Third, read to think of new ways at looking at the themes discussed in the book, article or any kind of text.
