“We’re terrible at talent identification and we should avoid it as long as possible. We need to get comfortable with the fact that when we do these early selections, most of the time they’re wrong and most of the time they’re biased.”
@bakerjyorku
Selecting “talented” individuals at young ages basically means selecting the ones who won the calendarlottery🎰,born closer to the calendar cutoff. The earlier we make cuts & (de)select kids out o/t system, the more likely we‘re to get it wrong. The evidence: relative age effect.

“He and his followers are deconstructing narratives around what football is &how it might be played.His strategy transcends mere functionality as his tactical approach provokes us to question even our most deep-seated footballing beliefs”
For some reason many adults have been convinced that sports can either be competitive or fun, but not both & they couldn’t be more wrong.

“Imagine being 10y old & continuously hearing different instructions, in different tones,from different people, as in coach(es) & parent(s). No doubt all well-intentioned, but it’s not going to help, in fact the opposite will be the result. Is that we want for them & their game?”
“There’s no such thing as a 9-year old future centre back”
✅If you truly care about the individual development of players rotating positions is key, definitely i/t foundation phase. Let them have fun,exploit & discover their game an everything that’s in it!There is more to win!

Dribbling, not only i/t foundation phase is an absolute must! Don’t be fooled by the "play & pass the ball" shouting people!

The longer I see coaches coach & talk about coaching, the more I realise that coaching isn't about “making children” technically, tactically brilliant from a young age.
I/t end it’s all about meeting the needs o/t kids &retaining them playing & loving the game until a later age!
“Kids will have periods where they plateau/or grow quickly,they improve rapidly/or get worse. All part o/t sporting process.The latter one is difficult for coaches&parents but reality. 1 thing is clear, current/early sporting performance isn’t a good indicator of future success.”
🗣”Imagine you’re a 10 year old who’s enjoying & discovering the game. But continuously during your game you hear a lot of(different) instructions⤵️, in different tones, from different people. Undoubtedly well intentioned, but this isn’t going to help!”

As a coach you need to understand that learning which is taking place isn’t measurable in front of you & it doesn’t show by any ‘result’ i/t weekend.
✅ Coaching & learning is about having an actual impact over time…years or longer. Impact o/t total development of the children!

Coaches and parents of youth players (in any sport) - in 10 years your kid isn’t going to remember how they did at some random youth tournament when they were 8.
You know what they will remember, though? Their relationship with you. Don’t forget what’s actually important.
