RIP Nipsey.. Aside from great music he was doing so much to make a positive impact and add on to the growth of his community. Senseless is an understatement.
Rap nerd fact: “touch the sky” started out with the Flash Gordon theme intro but We got rid of it. Bc we didn’t mix it and mastered my version right out the MPC, You can hear a smallllllll bit of the last Flash bass note in the beginning during the opening hi hats.
Unbelievable. Mac was that kid brother that Drove you nuts but you loved him at the same time. Will miss his energy, enthusiasm, and the 5am phone calls / texts waking me up w his crazy music ideas. 😞
The 69 kid might not care about his life but he has parents, a family and hip hop elders that do. He needs to slow down too. Hope he gets it together.
Get your money and stay low.
No more Toys R Us. That was a magical ritual-like experience as a young'n. The anticipation while in the car.. Pulling up..and walking in to aisles and aisles of what felt like heaven.
Where am I supposed to take the kid on his first shopping spree? Amazon? 😞
There is no way to summarize the impact and importance of DJ Mark the 45 King in one tweet, thinkpiece or story. He gave us so much, yet asked for so little, but deserved everything.
I was engineering verification of the master tapes when Arista bought Profile records catalog. At that time RunDMC had to perf “Christmas in Hollis” at the WH and had no instrumental. I was the only one in studio who knew the song so I had to recreate the mix from memory.
Was also truly a “man of the ppl”. I remember when Ray-J gave him one of his electric scooters at Snoop’s spot. Gave the Maybach keys to his homie and He rode the scooter back to his shop solo. Ppl were tripping seeing him out and about w no worries and he showed everyone love.
Never seen Fade To Black so that vid got me in my feelings lol. "What we do" is prob the greatest posse cut of that era that almost didn't happen. I was deleting it when Free walked in the room. Had to make it over again.
Without Dallas Penn, there is no Combat Jack Show. Without CJS, there’s no Budden, Nore, Ak, none of this. The whole Hip Hop podcasting industry owes him a debt of gratitude.
Pro Hip hop toddler dad tip.. funky drummer break and baby shark go perfect together. Dj dads Try it if you don’t believe me. Edit coming soon for all the rap dads.
Fun fact: “98 Sabers” bassline was an accident ala “Top Billin” drum pattern. Logic crashed but didn’t close and the beat kept playing but The bassline was stuttering. I was walking dogs and came back in room to it. It was better than what I did so I replayed and kept it. 🤷🏽♂️
More rap nerd tidbits. original “kingdom come” intro. Inspired by Superman: Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. Obv was too goofy to use, but the message was appropriate.
I respected my moms Motown and my dad’s Jazz records bc I understood they laid our foundation. she loved my Kane and Chubb Rock records. He made fun of Run DMC in that way dads do to their kids, but we still used to jam to “Daryl N Joe” the disconnect now is very different.
