Back with some personal news!!
Dec. 15 is my last day at the Las Cruces Sun-News. Starting next week, I'll join the Las Cruces Bulletin as a news reporter covering many of the same topics.
Never got a pay increase of any kind in my three years at gannett. Only changes to my compensation was reduction of my 401k contributions to zero, the elimination of my friend’s jobs, and vague promises of better things to come. Salary was 35k btw
Gannett's CEO Mike Reed got a 14% raise last year while the median pay for employees dropped by 3.4%.
Corporate greed is killing America's newsrooms and destroying our democracy.
I’m a basic ass New Mexican today. I’m sitting in the parking lot of district court drinking bad coffee from a styrofoam cup listening to los lonely boys.
As much I hate admit sometimes, this weird ass place is a part of me
Imagine being a PIO and tweeting this. The poster’s attitude (and maybe the department’s?) is that serving an arrest warrant must be done at any cost. The harm of killing a child, says PIO, is less then the potential harm presented by the suspect
That’s the logic of oppression
@source_nm
He was a fugitive. Period. And wanted for questioning for three violent crimes, including murder. Are police supposed to let his warrant slide and hope there isn’t another carjacking, shooting or murder in the meantime?
This puts reporters in an impossible position. We can:
1. do less work and harm the public
2. do more work and not get paid for it
3. quit and find something else somewhere else
They put us in this spot over and over and over again, then they wonder why papers underperform
It's fucked up and unfair that the Sun-News is one of Gannett's top performers, and it doesn't matter. Whether it's quality, page clicks, or subscribers, we outperform everyone in our category, sometimes higher. Now, we're out two reporters.
At Hadley Hall at New Mexico State University where Pro-Palestinian protestors have encamped inside the admin building. I’m trying to get access but have, so far been denied.
Will update here
Today, a murder trial begins two and half years after former
@LasCrucesPolice
Ofc. Christopher Smelser suffocated Antonio Valenzuela in February 2020.
@CrucesSunNews
Follow this thread for your day one coverage starting with a (near-the) courthouse protest and opening arguments
Only one day left in
#Monsoon2022
and it was the wettest on record for the western mountains of NM! The Rio Grande Valley had the 3rd wettest, while the rest of the western two-thirds of the state fell within the top 10 wettest. Drier east, but still above-average.
@krqe
#NMwx
Today, I've reported on
- a shooting off campus
- UNM's response to Cornavirus
- a false alarm fire on campus
- the states budget
Now I'm covering the student gov. election and fee raise referendum
#studentjournalism
The Sun-News — which covers 200,000 people — has 2 reporters, 1 photog, 1 producer/editor, and 1 editor as of today
Please explain exactly where you think you can cut.
And while you’re at it, explain to everyone here why you don’t think they’re important enough to invest in
I'm so proud of the
@DailyLobo
and so proud to call myself alumni
They are doing great work pushing the bounds of what's possible in journalism. Keep up the incredible work!
Absolutely gut-wrenching news coming out of Organ Mountian School
A student was killed while walking on the sidewalk. It appears another student (or former student, not sure which yet) lost control, veered over, and struck him.
This is the second kid to die at OMHS this year
Hey gang, I’m out at Albert Johnson Park in Las Cruces. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is hosting a rally in support of abortion rights. She’s set take the stage around 11.
Waited over a month for this IPRA, got flak from my department about requesting it and this is what they send me. Any thoughts on what to do with this journalism friends?
Alright gang. I locked my twitter for now bc I don’t want the trolls to make fun of my weight and tell me I have bad taste in music.
But, we will be covering the Matt Walsh talk at NMSU. I’ll be live tweeting and posting pics from this thread. Stay tuned
This is a difficult story read. The allegations are repulsive both on a physical level but also a spiritual one. Still, it’s critically important to understand just how bad things got in that locker room.
Details of assault and alleging NMSU basketball coaches knew highlight the lawsuit filed today by players Deuce Benjamin and Shakiru Odunewu, father and NMSU Hall of Famer William Benjamin.
Full lawsuit included
Ruidoso, Deming, & Silver City have newspapers where no one works. They have no staff.
No reporters, no editors — nothing.
Four reporters have left Gannett jobs in southern New Mexico in recent months (one was laid off)
None will be replaced
Guess who's back on the election beat? It's me.
I'm hanging out at the Dona Ana County Board of County Commissioners meeting. Later in the meeting, the board will vote on certifying the 2022 election.
It's fucked up and unfair that the Sun-News is one of Gannett's top performers, and it doesn't matter. Whether it's quality, page clicks, or subscribers, we outperform everyone in our category, sometimes higher. Now, we're out two reporters.
Very honored to have my name next to
@Goeldfinger
and
@ProkopDani
here. Thanks to both for inspiring me.
Obviously I didn't know Hank Trewhitt, but his name is synonymous with excellence at the Lobo. I hope that I continued that expecatatiom this year
Like seriously, when I asked the kids why they were voting and what motivated them, they acted like it was a stupid question
I might be jumping the gun here but I really think this is something big
This happened last weekend. Her name is Winry. She’s between 8 and 10 months old. Dani found her on the side of the road in Cibola County. She was stinky, sickly and sweet as an angel. The vet said she was chipless and was probably alone for weeks.
Just want to give a huge shoutout to the student journos who stuck it out last night. Reporting on something like this is hard and dangerous. But their questions were great, and they didn’t get distracted by the nonsense.
Student journalists are journalists
I'm looking through some old budget docs for a story, and I found this photo comparing the old downtown and the new downtown from 2011.
Budget documents are a weird but insightful way to learn LC's history, so here's a weird thread of funny things I'm finding!
New Mexico AG launching an investigation into Las Cruces’ biggest hospital— Memorial Medical Center.
The investigation comes after an NBC News investigation exposed a pattern of the hospital rejecting treatment for cancer patients.
Here’s the press release. More tk
btw, got to test out same-day voter registration in Dona Ana County. Worked pretty well, all things considered. Added about 20-30 extra minutes, but it went smoothly
Amelia Baca, 75, was killed almost a year ago by LCPD Officer Jared Cosper. Today, her story was broadcast to an international audience. It wouldn't have happened without
@MrJoshuaBowling
and
@vanesanchez_g
's reporting.
Thanks to The
@Guardian
for co-publishing our months-long
@SearchlightNM
investigation into NM’s tragic pattern of killing people during mental health crises
You can read it, from me &
@vanesanchez_g
, here:
My grandfather died two years ago today. There hasn’t been a day since then that I haven’t thought about him. He meant so much to me. Everyday I think about calling him to talk. I keep a photo of him on my desk because it makes me feel like he’s with me still.
Apologies this thread is a mess. Things happened fast. Here’s the take away
-
around 10 pro-Palestinian protestors were arrested at NMSU today after staging a sit in at the admin building. One person was injured during an altercation with LCPD. He was taken to the hospital.
At Hadley Hall at New Mexico State University where Pro-Palestinian protestors have encamped inside the admin building. I’m trying to get access but have, so far been denied.
Will update here
#BREAKING
A spokesperson for the New Mexico Civil Guard told me they are announcing on Thursday they want members of their group to run for Sheriff in Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Dona Ana counties
@krqe
cutting hundreds of staff then furloughing the rest wasn’t good enough for the corporate hacks running this company
new round of cuts coming Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Gannett is broken because of its leaders
The first time I felt like a real journalist was when
@ryanmlowery
reposted one of my ASUNM stories in 2018. Since then, Ryan has helped with the most difficult stories I've worked on and made me feel a part of the community. I always knew Ryan would answer the phone if I called.
Every issue is full team effort. But the fall photo issue saw the
@DailyLobo
editorial staff in full force. From edits to copy to design, I am so lucky to work with this group.
Sall Ahmadian clearly has no idea how much work goes into a single article. If only he’d asked that question of the dozen or so daily lobo people at the SFRB forum
Undergraduate Sall Ahmadian said, "I'm concerned that some students might be gaming the system and not taking a staff role or a stipen role. Then just doing it by article and pumping out articles."
Thank you to everyone who spoke in support of the Daily Lobo. I heard every single comment and each one warmed my heart so much. The hard work we do here would be impossible without you all. ASUNM Bill 18F has failed.
This is a blatant attempt at censorship and a major violation of the first amendment
@nmfog
It’s sad but unsurprising to see
@UNM
@UNM_DOS
so erroneously issue a gag on student reporter for criticizing a student senator.
since we're talking about freedom of the press, [redacted member of student government] just got me hit with a no contact directive from the dean which is basically a two-year gag order on ever talking to, writing about, or making goofs about [redacted student government member]
Lot of quotable moments from Las Cruces City Council today. But my absolute favorite was describing a specific zoning ordinance as “classist nonsense.”
And before you ask, yes it was about a dispensary.
I’m up in Ruidoso covering the McBride fire. Weather is beautiful this morning even as smoke looms over the village. NWS says wind will pick up this afternoon. Yesterday had gusts up to 80 mph. Today will have gusts up to 30mph. Thread 1/??
I have stuff to say about Gannett -- none of it's good. I won't get into it now, but I will later. But I'm grateful for this.
Some of the best reporters/editors I've known, I met at Gannett. They did (and do) meaningful work in spite of impossible situations the company creates.
You better follow Dani’s coverage of the Supreme Court’s oral arguments on Texas v. New Mexico.
If not, I will personally invite Clarence Thomas on a yacht trip to discuss you and your unwillingness to learn about this critical case
Good morning! I'm making my way to the Potomac River basin.
I'll be covering the oral arguments before
#SCOTUS
in the landmark Rio Grande case Wed. The federal government is asking the court to reject a settlement reached by NM, TX and CO.
We've captured multiple incidents involving brave student journalists.
Here's our story about the
@DailyLobo
team, who were tear gassed multiple times Sunday in Albuquerque. Their senior reporter
@agunnwrites
was also struck by a foam round shot by police
Today, I’ve written about a fatal motorcycle crash, a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student and a new judge in town. Tonight, I’m videoing a famous band at a local brewery. Does this mean anything? Maybe. Is life complicated? Yeah
