Why are kids playing Fortnight? Because they are having fun. Why is sports participation declining? Because they are not having fun. It's simple! It's not because they are lazy, entitled, or "don't want it". So... what can we learn from this? Make sports fun again!

If I had a boss who yelled at me in front of the whole company in the manner I often corrected my players in games or practices, I'd quit. Often our behaviors as coaches isn't just bad leadership, but unacceptable & immoral. Be demanding without being demeaning. #CallingUp

A huge misconception of the research on growth mindset is that we shouldn’t have winners & losers in sports. Saving kids from losing doesn’t promote a growth mindset. We need to teach them to learn and grow through the loss. It’s not about losing, it’s about the response.

Sadly we have way too many administrators unwilling to establish clear boundaries with parents of athletes because they don't want to risk getting fired or a lawsuit, while coaches are left hanging out to dry with their jobs on the line.

Every job looks easy when you’re not the one doing it because the challenges faced by someone in the arena are often invisible to those in the crowd . -Morgan Housel

What a journey it’s been! Incredibly grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my former player @CjGreer02 as I worked with his college basketball team this week and he was one of 100 leaders attending the Building Life Champions workshop! A special special man.

“A coach’s self-worth is never determined by winning or losing. Our desire to dominate or destroy an opponent is a result of insecurity, a sense of insignificance, and shame. Competitors can be after the same goal—excellence—but they cannot find it alone. -Joe Ehrmann

2019 taught me to take chances on people with character, even if they lack experience or ability of others. Don't evaluate character by what they say, look below the surface to see what they do. Most importantly how they treat people who can't do anything for them.

If my wife’s boss constantly criticized and yelled at her- and she stopped enjoying her work I would tell her to quit. So if my kid’s coach takes a similar approach of criticizing and yelling, I will encourage them to quit as well. Work or play- we should find enjoyment in it.

As I watch the "The Last Dance" and reflect with coaches I can't help but wonder: What's the collateral damage of pursuing greatness at that level?
