500 days ago Onosato had never set foot in a professional sumo ring.
Now he’s an ozeki with two Emperor’s Cups and 8 special prizes to his name.

So much has happened in the intervening period it's hard to believe it's still only around a year and a half since I took these photos of soon-to-be-ozeki Onosato winning his second straight All-Japan title

Now there was a time…when Onosato was in juryo and (to much derision) I predicted he’d be ozeki within the year.
No point in using social media if you can’t take a victory lap when you get one right 🤣 - and yes I’m celebrating before crossing the line.

Had fun being the 5th Beatle as a color commentator on NHK live sumo broadcasts from 2012 to 2020.
Then Covid hit and restrictions saw the play-by-play guys (Hiro, Ross, Murray, and Raja) alone in the booth.
Post pandemic NHK stuck with one-person shows.😢

Back in the day the McDonalds across from the Kokugikan used to give free food to any rikishi that won his bout that day. You had to fill in your ring name, stable, and winning move for display on a board.

2004 September. Ozeki Kaio's 5th and final yusho.
Onosato was four years old. Hakuoho was one, and Wakaikari wouldn't be born for another five months.

In two decades plus of involvement with Japan’s national sport there have been just three rikishi that (while they were still in the lower divisions) I was absolutely certain would make yokozuna
1. Hakuho
2. Wakanoho
3. Onosato

Photo I took of three sumo legends in Sept 2006.
Posing with Ozeki Hakuho and Yokozuna Asashoryu is Suzue Sato - an artist who hand-colored more than 350 giant monochrome championship photos for 62 years beginning in 1951.
These days they use digital color photos

Nishikigi is going well this basho.
Back in 2012 he and I went to a Hanshin Tigers game at Tokyo Dome with former makushita Kamakura.
The three of us took up four seats forcing another fan to share a seat across the aisle. We bought him beer and snacks as an apology

Photo I took of Kinbozan and the future Takerufuji in the Kokugikan dressing room during the 2021 All Japan Championships.
Onosato won the first of two consecutive Amateur Yokozuna titles that day, while Hakuoho, and Hidetora Hanada also competed.

Wakaikari’s ninth straight Kachikoshi since joining pro sumo has put the son of Kabutoyama oyakata on the cusp of promotion to juryo.
Seigo has a younger brother (Chugo) who should soon be joining him in ozumo.
Both have been doing sumo since they were preschoolers.

Several people have asked about the T-shirt Murray wore on Grand Sumo Preview this week.
There were only five made (for us presenters on the show) and feature drawings by illustrator Kayo Takimoto for a 2020 edition of NHK's 'Sumo Broadcast' magazine.

My photo of sekiwake Hakuho walking into the Kokugikan on day 14 of the January 2006 tournament.

Yep. I lived about 50 meters away and was in the stable most mornings. We used to hang out all the time, when he was in the lower divisions, shooting pool, movies, etc.

Wajima played for RocBull and later was GM for the team. Wakanohana played for Onward Skylarks. Neither team still exists though Nojima Sagamihara Rise is the successor to Onward.
@tesol81
Wakanoho and Wakanohana are the only former rikishi to try out for NFL coaches in the US. Other former rikishi (including yokozuna Wajima) have played in the XLeague. Japan born players have been in NFL preseason games but none so far in the regular season.
