I like seeing HS baseball guys on their twitter bio pics decked out in their HS football gear. What a great look. Most scouts/coaches feel the same way. It tells me you’ve probably been hit in the mouth more than once. I dig multi sport guys. Huge game changer 4 me. #compete2win

Got a nice text from a player today. 4 yrs ago He asked me what he should do. He had a nice D1 offer and all his boys were going D1. I only ever say go where u think u can play right away. He went 2 yrs JC, 2 yrs D1, got 500 ABs, graduates next week and thinks he may get drafted

Catchers. Good news! I don’t care about your pop times. Make gd throws in in/out. Make gd throws between innings. Nothing makes me more nuts than 2 hoppers or bad throws. Take pride in your throws whether you’re a prospect or not, someones always watching. Accuracy is efficiency

The easiest thing to do as a scout is to say “this guys not a big leaguer” and you’ll probably be right 90% of time.That’s the easy way out. The hardest thing to do is to say “this guys a big leaguer” and stick with your opinion, your gut, trusting your eyes, and fight for him.

25-30 pitch innings have become fairly common in Hs & College and don’t even seem to be a big deal, like its just part of the game. Pitchers got to take accountability. Challenge yourself. I got 10 or 12 to get us back in the dugout, find a way-Lots of ways to get 3 outs #compete

Guy at the gym told me he’s spent 10k this year taking his son to eval camps all over the Country. They’re super excited, kid got a Scholarship offer from a JC in TX. Kids a good player. I told him I coulda saved him 1k & called the JC Coach for 9k & saved him all the trouble 🤷🏻‍♂️

I get a ton of DMs daily asking me what a scout looks for in a position player. #1 You got to hit. But, #2 you BETTER be able to play a position at a high level or multi positions really well. Defensive Value has become so paramount in the game today. Becoming a better defender

📌Your swing is yours. You’ve done it over & over the same way since you were a little kid. If you can hit, you can hit. The HOF got a lot of guys with ugly swings. Hitting is Balance, Rhythm and Timing. I hear “this guys swing won’t work,” and all the guy does is hit. #Justhit

First scouting job - 1993 Cleveland Indians OK. Arkansas. N Texas. A roll of dimes -drive up phone booths, road map in your lap, a radar gun plugged into a suitcase. No internet, Hand wrote reports, No follows, just hunted. Zero info shared. Met some of the greatest scouts.

Christian Javier discredited the narrative that you can’t pitch with your FB 50% of the time, so he used his FB 70% at 92-95 in a WS game and shoved for 6. Spin, hop, ride, blah blah blah. Trust and Locate your FB. Hitting is really hard.

I Used to think strikeouts per inning were the ultimate stat. Nope. WHIP is my choice now. (Walks + Hits per innings pitched) is the stat that I go to now, especially on a D1 or pro level guy. You drop a 1.20 your good. 1.10 you’re really good. 1.00 or sub 1 you’re a dude.

🔥You can tell me velocity over fastball command and you’ll never convince me. I love velocity, but its everywhere now. You can train for extra ticks of velocity, but you’re an outlier if you have + command. Coaches are counting outs, not velocity. Outs get you your next start

Here’s what a good slider shape looks like. Here’s an Astros prospect with a competitive 88 mph slider. Has power, velocity, depth, w/ vertical shape and in zone attack to it. It’s a competitive rep - if it misses the bat, it’s still got a chance to be a strike with no swing✔️

From a scout standpoint as an evaluator in any sport, I’ve got to re-evaluate a player who skips out on playing in championships. Its not the risk of injury issue. I think it’s a performance issue, and tells me a lot about you. You weren’t concerned of injury in every game prior.

Had this pitching coach in College, before a start one night he said, don’t even think about throwing an offspeed pitch until you give up a hit. Thought he was nuts. Looked up and it was the 5th inning and hadn’t used my nasty breaker yet. Forced me to compete with 1 weapon

Heard “old school” referenced a handful of times during and after the game tonite. I disagree. I saw it more so as decisions made by an experienced Mgr and exp Plyrs - going with their gut, trust and instinct in the moment. That’s not “old school” that’s “WISDOM”

📌 Catchers I watch every throw, it’s my thing Take some pride in your throws down to 2B between innings. I get the HS catcher misfires 1 or 2 per game. But I don’t get it & I never will, the College guy who can’t complete a pass between innings every time. A lot of 1 or 2 for 9

Did some stats scrolling today to see who’s making an impact. Found a few names of interest. One takeaway was the strikeouts #s are ALARMING! Cmon boys tighten it up. I look at 4 #s - ABs/Hits/HRs/Ks. Ks = or > Hits is a tough buy or sell. #competeinthebox

Saw this on the telecast tonight. If you’re curious, JP France got $1,000 bonus. Only a few years ago a College Senior after the 10th round got a plane ticket, a chance, and a grand in their pocket to go compete for a job in rookie ball. Good scouting wins every time.

I remember as a young pitcher even in college, if guys were hitting lasers off me, the coach always yelling, “keep the ball down!” I’m sure you did too. Since we’ve come to find now there’s more whiffs at the top of the zone, I’ve never heard a coach yell “get the ball up!”🤷🏻‍♂️

Truth be told, “VELO ain’t as sexy as it used to be” Little Billy in the 9 hole at the local HS is foulin off 96 & diggin in, and Juco Johnnie in the 3 hole is smokin rods off some top 20 HS arm in front of 60 scouts pointin pistols & scratchin their heads. Happens everyday

I love athletes & loud tools. But can he play?” The 1st question I ask when coach starts reeling off #s on a player. I can read all that, I can see if a guy can run, field, throw, hit, & if it comes off hot. But, can he play? can he pitch? Huge part of equation #CHP #6thtool

The greatest thing about scouting is that we all see a player differently. You may not see a guy really good or get to see all you want to, but he still gives you that good “gut feeling”. You cant quantify it, that’s the beauty of it. Its kinda like falling in love #trustyourgut

We talk about Makeup all the time. Typical answer; works hard, great kid, leader, tough, etc. Thats Character. Makeup IMO is ability to Compete, Adapt & Perform at a higher level when the moment gets bigger & the lights get brighter. Use your eyes, they’ll show ya if they got it
