So many women do not feel safe in academia. It has never been that hard to understand why (you just need to listen and empathize a tiny bit), but today my fool (emeritus) colleague from another department here at UW painted it in neon.
People always report just the mass of their new babies. Honestly, why can't we get other useful properties like length, density, thermal conductivity and permeability?
As a side note, tomorrow I will submit his tweets to our EEOO/Title IX complaint office. I hope many other UW employees and students do too, and it can be the beginning of a disciplinary process to hold him accountable.
NSF CAREER proposals are due in about 5 months. Now is the time to start planning! I wanted to share a bit about what I think is the most common mistake in CAREER proposals I have reviewed: misunderstanding "integrating research and education" and "broader impacts" (1/n)
Well, here's the tweet! I am so excited about this next step and the opportunities to work with students, staff and faculty at NCSU. I will be forever grateful for the chance to have launched my career here at the UW and dearly miss my friends and colleagues.
ChemE faculty candidates: Most departments are now doing Zoom interviews (20-60 minutes) as a screen prior to making invitations for full long format interviews. Here are a few things I wish every candidate knew. Let's roll:
I have tried to develop mentee-centric advising and build a lab where people feel safe bringing me any sort of issue. (not that I can handle all issues, but my privilege means I can bring more resources if needed). There are 3 steps top of mind in tough mentoring meetings: (1/6)
Faculty hiring 2020 is coming. Yes there will be TT jobs available. Yes there will be many fewer than last year. Should you apply this year? Wait it out? Give up altogether? A few thoughts (1/n)

Wife (After being split up in the grocery store for > 10 min): “what are you doing!?”
Me: “I found a cool paper on twitter and I’m sending to my group”
@AcademicChatter
Many faculty (esp. women and persons from minoritized and underrepresented backgrounds) do enormous amounts of hidden service work supporting the most vulnerable people in your departments. This year I added a specific call-out on our annual activity report and performance (1/4)
Hello everyone, I helped create an REU program for students interested in computational molecular science. Applications are due March 21, please help spread the word.
Good luck to all the faculty candidates getting ready for their on-site interviews in the coming weeks/months. Long(ish) thread on some suggestions for success. Reply with questions or clarifications.

Super excited that as of July I am a joint faculty in the
@UWChemistry
department (Professor of Chemistry). Excited to grow collaborations with existing and new friends and advise more Chem grad students.
As CAREER drops keep coming in hot, I want to remind the disappointed assistant profs out there that you are much much more than any line on your CV. My first department chair relentlessly told me, "don't bet your career on a CAREER" and he was 100% right. (1/3)

Top 3 rules for successfully navigating academic conference calls:
1) mute your microphone
2) learn how to quickly unmute your microphone when you need to speak
3) remember to re-mute your microphone

I spoke recently at a campus workshop on NSF CAREER writing and I’ve been reflecting on the types of questions we got from the jr faculty. A small 🧵 (1/11)
Your career is much longer than a marathon. Pace yourself and prioritize self-care so you can be satisfied as much as possible and not just at the finish line.
Today a graduate student in my group told me, "I'm not really into memes and I also don't like Lord of the Rings" and I was like, "wow it is great you didn't share that before you joined the group"
Wearing my

hat and asking postdocs to please make sure their email address is available on a website, university directory or twitter bio. I love inviting postdocs with relevant expertise to review papers but >25% of the time I can't find contact info.
Departments all over the country are working on seminar nominations for next year. Please remember to take an inclusive approach and look at your portfolio of prospective invites. It is great for students and postdocs when they see themselves reflected in your slate of speakers.
I will not participate in submission or review to

PhD recruits, if you are holding on to >2 offers right now I strongly encourage you to winnow down your list. Realize that your "maybe, but probably not", is someone else's dream school and most places can't make offers off the waitlist without early declines (i.e., soon).
"What advice do you have for someone who is comparing different grad schools?" Great question this AM from a prospective

student. No perfect answers here but I recommend getting a variety of viewpoints before digging in to make a final decision. Thoughts... (1/7)
Profs and academic support staff: Last Autumn was hard and you are burnt to a crisp.
It is ok to feel that way; it is real and not in your head. Many are feeling the same way
Please find a way to take care of yourselves over the next few weeks and recover a bit.
"Can you write a recommendation letter for a chemical engineering student to apply for graduate school. The student is one of the best in the last 10 years and would like to be a professor after they earn their PhD"
We have a new endowed fund in the department for community led DEI projects (link in thread). One of the first projects is led by a group of students in our department and me to create a seminar series about the intersection of ChemE practice with ethics and DEI. (1/4)
Hottest day of the year so far, so why not 7 mile hike with 1800 ft gain with the group 😅😅😅. We all made it and several got to swim in ice cold Snow Lake 🥶

@UWChemE
, we have a very strong philosophy that the AIChE faculty candidates poster session is a time for us to answer your questions and for us to convince you to apply to our searches. We do not evaluate you or make decisions about next steps based on our interactions (1/2)
I love seeing all the tenure announcements but also want to share condolences to those getting bad news about P&T. You gave your life to a goal for 5+ years. It is unspeakably painful to miss this mark, but by trying you did something most people are even unwilling to attempt.
AIChE ppl, I'm giving a talk at 8 am tomorrow in the Young Faculty Forum. We're going to talk about working too much and mental health. Come and get it!
Sheraton Back Bay, Republic Ballroom A - 8 am!
Many faculty find out they *didn’t* receive prestigious awards via Twitter. It is totally fine to feel disappointed and bummed about this. While at a major conference in my 3rd year I had around $2M in young investigator grants declined in 2 days. I drank a lot.
My work friends+family at

held a surprise going away party for me yesterday. It was super fun to see everyone and a little emotional when I had to make a few impromptu remarks (but this OK in the end since I needed a little more salt for my margarita). 🤗🤗🤗

Virtual grad recruiting today! Looking forward to meeting 15+ prospective grad students. I decided to just do a quick FAQ and answer the most common questions before we dig into research.
One time a senior faculty told me, “by the time you’re as old as me if your h-index isn’t equal to your age you should just do something else.” This is filed in my long term memory under, “not great.”
People know when you have their back and are trying to help. Do your best and apologize when you make a mistake. For many of us, today is still a day when we can make a difference in our workplaces and labs. Let his comments spur you on toward good, not despair. (6/6)
Haven't had the chance to come up for air much on here or 🧵s since getting started two months ago. I am absolutely over the moon with how my new job is going! I find the work interesting and energizing and the team of staff and faculty I am working with are stellar. (1/4)
Hey

Encouragement: there is a fine line between denying the lived experience of someone who is struggling AND reminding them of the (likely) many excellent things they have going for them. "This doesn't take away from your struggle today, but I was just thinking of how you..." (3/6)
Hey molecular simulation ppl, abstracts are due 3/18 for the 2022 FOMMS (Foundations of Molecular Modeling and Simulation) conference. Please RT, and plan to join us in WI! This is my favorite conference!

Yesterday I drive around Seattle and delivered an Oculus headset to almost all the grads and postdocs in my group (a few stragglers are left). Looking forward to figuring out Zoom-less ways to collaborate and do some science together!

was where my first paper was published (after 4 rounds of revisions 🙈) and I have always been excited to submit and review for these journals. It is a huge honor and privilege to serve as an editor here. Thank you to the JPC team for the invitation!
Join us in welcoming Jim Pfaendtner (Univ. of Washington)
@JimPfaendtner
as Senior Editor of JPC!
He brings expertise in molecular simulation and stat mech analyses of complex fluids, soft matter, biomolecular phenomena and theory/modeling of chemical reactivity. Welcome, Jim!
A simple, but straightforward framework to think about your CAREER proposal is: 1) I will lead some research ; 2) I will integrate this research with my activities as an educator ; 3) I will use my research and educational activities to achieve these "broader impacts" (6/n)
