New pinned Tweet time! Happy to announce I've written a book about the 2000 World Series. "The Subway Series" comes out in April & is available to preorder now. Includes 30+ interviews w/pivotal people from the '00 World Series & Yanks-Mets rivalry.
And Michael Conforto, the kid you want to be in your kid's class: "I went to Lagares to celebrate with him, It’s always awkward, being the run that comes in and no one goes out there. I didn’t want to leave him alone.”
In game no. 161 on the final Saturday of 2018, the Mets said goodbye to David Wright. In game no. 161 on the final Saturday of 2019, Pete Alonso broke the all-time rookie HR record. Pete's first game in uniform was Wright's first game out. Seamless passing of the baton.
Oliver Perez just got the save for the Indians. He made his MLB debut for the Padres on 6/16/02. The opposing pitcher was Jamie Moyer, who made his MLB debut on 6/16/86. The opposing pitcher in Moyer's debut was Steve Carlton, who made his MLB debut on 4/12/65.
Buck is BACK and he is rolling. "Max didn't have any trouble controlling the ball tonight." Then says "Don't forget about the 15-minute LIGHT delay" and starts to say not everyone could overcome that, which you can bet is a zing at both the Nationals and Gerrit Cole.
Paul Sewald records his second save and lowers his ERA to 1.40 while closing out a win for Chris Flexen, who is 8-3 w/a 3.51 ERA and I say to you why can't the Mets get guys like these?
The Mets have lost again. As GARE notes, the Mets have gone from 10 over to 10 under faster than any team in the history of baseball, which has been played since 1876.
I love this (not for St. John's, just the spirit of it). The bigs have been calling the NIT the Not Invited Tournament for 50 years & somehow the NCAA thought dumping the mids who still valued it & catering to the power schools could save it. Enjoy cannibalizing yourself, morons.
Saint Peter's, with an endowment of $37 million and fewer than 3,600 students on a 30-acre campus, just beat Kentucky, which has an endowment of $1.4 billion, more than 30,000 students on a 918-acre campus and 34 players drafted by the NBA in the last 10 years. MARCH!!!
Rosenthal is trying to break news, do a live spot on MLB Network and deal with Harold Reynolds all at the same time. "It's for the reason I just said, Harold." He the real MVP.
Good for the Braves for taking full advantage of the home field advantage earned via their 88-win division title and punishing those slackass 106-win wild card Dodgers.
More Snitker on deGrom: "I don’t know how anybody ever beats him. Like I say, you don’t like to face him, but you know what, when you do face him, man, you appreciate what he is and what he can do."
Regular reminder there was no rule stating the Mets had to pick between Zack Wheeler & Marcus Stroman and in fact as a big-market team that airs its games on a team-owned network they should have kept both.
David Wright goes 0-1 with a walk in his final major league game. Sometimes, the storybook ending is simply getting the chance to write the final page.
The Patriots, a champion that wins in sketchy fashion, is wildly unpopular outside of its cult-like base & revels in attacking the accuracy of any news that is not unyieldingly positive, are eliminated. As far as positive signs go for 2020, you could do a lot worse.
Joe Girardi at his Phillies press conference today, when asked about the Mets:
"I interviewed a number of times. As you know, I’m a faithful man and this [Philadelphia] is where I really believe God meant me to be."
The Met have won the game. That's eight straight and 15 out of 16. They are tied (at the moment) for the 2nd wild card and a half-game behind the NAts for the 1st wild card. They were the third-worst team in the NL 16 days ago. You have never seen anything like this. Enjoy it.
This is so classic Mets, deciding they are interested in a multi-year deal with their own guy as he hits free agency. Could have saved a lot of money doing this 15 months ago, but why do that?
Mets are interested in multiyear deal with Zack Wheeler, who will decline $17.8M qualifying offer. If they can’t get Wheeler they will consider trades and other free agents to acquire a starter. Last alternative would be to move Lugo or Gsellman into rotation.

I used to write out sports standings in 2nd grade. My teacher told my Mom I'd do something with sports. That was more than 35 years ago, and she was right.
My Mom died 10 yrs ago tonight. In the last Family Ties, Alex, the oldest child, says to Elyse: "There’s a lot of big changes ahead, but you’re still my mother. You know, I’m still Alex Keaton. I’m still Elyse Keaton’s son."
I'm still Jerry Beach. I'm still Maureen Beach's son.
Trevor May, part of a team that broke thru with the Twins, with a really interesting take on a young team trying to take the next step: “That transition into a team that walks into the clubhouse expecting to win everyday is happening. It’s happening and guys are growing.”
Pete Alonso is the third player to win the Home Run Derby & steal a base in the All-Star Game in the same year, joining Eric Davis (1989) & Ken Griffey Jr. (1998). I have mentioned Pete Alonso & Eric Davis in the same Tweet, I have achieved all I wanted to achieve.
Folks, it is time for my magnum opus v3.0. It's time for the NCAA Tournament in Simpsons pics/quotes. I'm doing all 68 teams today b/c I split them up last year but the second day numbers weren't nearly as good. So here we go, follow along in the thread!

I've had a blog about sports at my alma mater since 2008. Last year, I was looking for some details on a game from 2009 and went to my entry. All the links from the newspapers covering the game were gone. Wasn't surprised but still sort of jarring.
It'd be nice if the Wilpons knew what they had in Mets fans. This place went nuts for McNeil when he was introduced, went nuts when he singled and went nuts when he went to third base for the 9th. Smart & loyal fans who are thirsting for a winner & a well-run team.
This weekend is a sobering reminder of how far away the Mets are from the elite of the NL. Dodgers just rolled out bullpen arm after arm and pinch-hitter after pinch-hitter. Actual depth, not let’s-hope-this-works-out depth.
It’s been a uniquely Long Island spring and here’s another uniquely Long Island moment: Cars lined up along Route 109 to greet the Islanders as they land at Republic.
LOLOLOLOLLLLLL God NFL teams can be insufferable. Pretty sure the Vikings will be painfully mediocre with or without Skol69 posting footage of Kirk Cousins throwing a pass.
Carlisle was so good in defeat on Monday but this is cringe-inducing. Three of the last five champs are the Raptors, Bucks & Nuggets. The T-Wolves or Thunder are probably going to be the West rep this year. Bad look for a guy who should know better.
As the Mets & Reds began their series in NY on July 30, the Mets were 3 1/2 up in the NL East and the Reds were five back of the Padres. That was 23 days ago.
Martin Inglesby said he texted his wife after the Towson loss on 2/28 & said they were gonna split a bottle of wine to drink away their sorrows: “And she texted me right back and said nope you’re gonna come home and you’re gonna figure this shit out. And I needed to hear that.”
It rarely happens but
@NYPost_Brazille
raises a good questipn: Who throws out the first pitch at the Nationals' World Series opener? Would be a hundred possibilities if the Nats didn't spend most of the last 15 years ignoring their Expos past.
Good news: A NY team has to win this weekend in the Subway Series! Trivia/Subway Series book giveaway: Name 1st player to play in a Subway Series game (97-pres) for both teams. One person who guesses correctly by Fri @ 7 PM EST will win a book. I'll repost every night. Good luck!
Now, it could work out. If the Mets hang on to Syndergaard & extend Wheeler, then you're looking at a 2020 rotation of deGrom-Wheeler-Syndergaard-Stroman-Matz. That's pretty freaking good. But it also comes with a ticking clock for the free agency of the back three guys. So...
Mets lost 2 of 3 to the Nats when they weren't facing Scherzer or Strasburg. They got swept by Miami, who was on a 1962 Mets pace. They swept the Nats while facing Corbin, Scherzer & Strasbrug. Now they're losing 4-0 to the Tigers, who have lost 8 straight. This all makes sense.
Saint Peter's and Fairleigh Dickinson have a combined endowment of $125.3 million. Purdue and Kentucky have a combined endowment of $5.56 billion.
Saint Peter's & FDU against Purdue & Kentucky the last two years: 2-0.
MARCH!!!!
The Islanders were five points out of third place in the Metro and five points back of the second wild card with nine games left to play after Mar. 31. A 7-0-1 run later, they'll make the playoffs with a game to spare.
Picked 9th in preseason, finished tied for 1st, won 10 gms after trailing by double digits. lost CAA title game by four points & 12-15 days later won four games in four days to win the CBI.
@DanSpears
is right, people will be talking about this UNCW team for a long time.
Hilarious listening to YES broadcasters scold Jose Urena for throwing at Ronald Acuna. Nobody said anything about Roger Clemens being a gutless punk from 1999-2003. And of course they're excusing Severino nearly beaning Betts earlier this season.
Just saw commercials for Magnum P.I. & Murphy Brown, both coming to CBS this fall. I have faith 1988 is gonna be good and I'll finally fare well in math and find a girlfriend.
Brodie & Jeff (probably mostly Jeff) let Mickey Callaway dangle as a dead man walking for most of the 2019 season, and then for three-plus days after that for kicks & giggles. Steve Cohen didn't even wait three hours to get rid of Brodie. That's leadership.
A-10 weighing move of men's hoops tournament from Brooklyn's Barclays Center to campus site, perhaps VCU, perhaps the University of Richmond. via
