DA José Garza gave a sweetheart plea deal of 10 years probation and anger management classes to Xavier Zarate for manslaughter and injury to a child. He took the life of an innocent 13-year-old boy. This is not justice.
Travis County deserves better. Get out and vote.

I want to make it unequivocally clear that I, and my campaign, denounce the demagogic mailer by the so-called Saving Austin PAC attacking José Garza. As a dad of three young girls, it was painful to see.
That extreme rhetoric and imagery should have no place in this race. There

Sadly, too many businesses across Travis County have been forced to change the way they operate due to public safety concerns.

The truth is soft-on-crime policies in the DA's Office have resulted in more lenient sentencing for violent crimes, allowing more felons & violent offenders on our streets. In many cases, criminal charges are rejected and some suspects are released before they ever see a judge.
More felony convictions in Travis County end up in local jail than anywhere else in Texas | According to the Texas Penal Code, a local jail sentence of 365 days or less is typically the punishment range for misdemeanor-level offenses.

The office of District Attorney has a responsibility to make our community safer. It's very clear that we need new leadership in the DA's Office. We need to re-commit to a shared vision to ensure that justice is done, guided by compassion and balanced with tradition of fairness.

I began my career as a public defender in the Texas panhandle. I moved to Austin in 2006, spending 15+ years in the Travis County DA's office as a prosecutor and later a supervisor, assigned to some of the most serious and complicated felony cases.
My tribe, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, is my extended family. We’re not many, but we are a vibrant, self-governing sovereign. I was proud to be sworn in with my Dad standing by my side as our first Chief Appellate Tribal Judge. Proud to be a member. Prouder to serve.
I recently spoke with the Minority Bar Forum in Austin. It was great to talk with the members of this group about our criminal justice system, and I look forward to continuing to work with them to address injustice and community safety.
