My dad was a fireman, mum was a teacher. They could afford a 4 bed family house in suburban Manchester. Today those people simply can’t, because the price/wage ratio is so unbalanced. “Just work harder” is a shameful cop out.

Back in Manchester, I’m always struck by how quickly it’s growing. 🏗️ Brownfield land is being turned into homes; unsurprisingly GDP growth has out-performed other cities. 📈 Friends who settled down here are better off than their equivalents in London. Decline is a choice.

Conservatives are 4th with 25-34s, and 30 points behind with 35-44s. Knocking on doors, if someone under 45 answers your gut says they’re against. Thats not sustainable. Every single leadership contender needs a clear plan to fix it.

Spot on from @DamianGreen about the need to listen to younger voters. Stalling on these priorities, namely not building infrastructure or finding a better tax balance, was too short-termist. Older voters aren’t cruel, they can see past immediate enrichment.

Gentle density can be difficult to persuade people of. There’s a binary understanding of semi detached urban sprawl or tower blocks. New areas of 4-6 story density, built beautifully. could do so much to tackle the housing crisis.

Low density in central London is wrecking our nighttime economy. Venues can’t afford rent, staff salary (which goes on 🏠). People live 40-60 out so footfall is lower. The whole point of a city is the benefit of proximity. We need more density 🌃

Not to go all "Housing Theory of Everything" on it but the reason London Nightlife is shit is because none of the staff can afford to live within 40 minutes of where they work and struggle to get home after 1am

. @NextGenTories talks a lot about supply. It’s because young people feel outraged when campaigns & politicians tell us to ignore basic evidence. This is why age is the biggest sign of voting factor. Too many MPs buy this stuff.

The average house price in South West Surrey is £614,884. Without inherited wealth you’d need to earn £100k to get on the ladder. High earners aren’t super rich cash cows, because it’s absorbed by housing and tax. That’s why cutting NICs was right.

During the coalition the Lib Dems blocked new nuclear. Partly because “it took too long to build”. Imagine the anti-inflationary effect nuclear could have had on energy prices over the past few years.

It was disappointing to hear the judicial review decision on Sizewell C. The government is misguided in intense focus on nuclear energy. It is more expensive for bill payers than renewables and involves incredibly high sink costs for taxpayers.

“It’s a barrier to young people feeling that democracy and capitalism are working for them,” he said. “It’s simply harder for us to make that case if people feel that they’re being shut out.” This is exactly why building homes is key to Tory survival.

The Government must publicly call for an urgent ceasefire & implore Israel to end this heart-rending attack on Rafah. A full-scale attack would be a tragedy, killing countless more innocent Palestinians, displacing families & making it harder than ever to provide lifesaving aid.

A 1p cut to NI would give a much needed boost to squeezed middle earners. This is the right type of tax cut to incentivise work and reward aspiration. These are the priorities @NextGenTories has been calling for.
