The 2020 Olympic Trials will be held at Bryce Jordan Center on the Penn State campus. Just announced at Penn State alumni function in downtown Pittsburgh.
News from Penn State wrestling. Robbie Howard won’t be wrestling (injury), Will Betancourt is no longer with the program, Gary Steen will be the Lions’ 125-pounder…all per Coach Cael Sanderson.
Emotion plays a huge role in the life of successful athletes and coaches, especially with
@pennstateWREST
, and it was good to see it on display at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Switching to high school wrestling, the son of Penn State assistant coach Casey Cunningham, Asher Cunningham, just won a PIAA title at 160 pounds for State College High. He defeated Ryan Harvick of Central Dauphin 2-0, with a third-period reversal. Asher is a PSU commit.
Chew on this:
@pennstateWREST
and the Bryce Jordan Center is a candidate to host the 2020 Olympic Wrestling Trials. And, on June 16 of this year, Penn State will host three weight classes (men and women) in Final X competition to determine spots on the U.S. Senior World Team.
Penn State no longer can be caught and has clinched the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championship. The Nittany Lions, who have five finalists tonight, have won 9 titles since 2011 and 10 in school history. Michigan will finish second after winning the Big Ten title.
Former Penn State NCAA champ Mark Hall, coaching and training at University of Pennsylvania, removed his shoes at center mat after a loss to Trent Hidlay and will retire from completion. He received a nice round of applause from the PSU crowd.
How much has PSU freshman Tyler Kasak (149) improved? Well, he just took out top-seeded Ridge Lovett of Nebraska, who defeated him twice the season. Kasak, a 10-1 winner, now goes for third against WVU's Ty Watters, who pinned ASU 2-seed Kyle Parco.
If Kasak places third, he'll become just the eighth wrestler since 1998 to lose his first match and win seven straight to earn the bronze. Penn State's John Lange did that at 158 pounds (the weight then) in 1998 at Cleveland State. Quite the accomplishment if it occurs.
Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson says 125-pound redshirt freshman Brody Teske of Iowa is in the transfer portal. Also said incoming recruit Adam Busiello is on the roster. He is in the Penn State student directory.
Well, wasn't THAT everything it was expected to be. PSU's Mitchell Mesenbrink gave up counter takedowns to Wiscy's Dean Hamiti but he kept shooting. An escape, double-leg to a bodylock and right to Hamiti's back gave Mesenbrink seven points and a 13-11 win. Incredible stuff.
Question: how does a 3-time All-American get called for stalling four times? PSU's Mitchell Mesenbrink very impressive against Cam Amine. Complete domination in 12-1 major decision at 165. PSU leads 7-0 in Ann Arbor.
Mitchell Mesenbrink has made himself at home in the
@pennstateWREST
lineup at 165 pounds, already building a 13-0 record and a No. 7 national ranking. Here is his perspective on things thus far:
And there is Penn State's first four-time NCAA wrestling champion in Carter Starocci, who used a penalty point and escape to upend Ohio State's Rocco Welsh 2-0. He ran to his corner and bear-hugged his three coaches and then took off his knee sleeve and brace at center mat.
Carter Starocci earns at-large bid to NCAAs at 174 pounds for
@pennstateWREST
; pairings and seeds to be announced on Wednesday night. Penn State also named to host the Big Tens in 2026; Northwestern will be the 2025 host.
Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson confirmed today that Alex Facundo, last year’s 165-pound starter, will take an Olympic redshirt this season. Its official name, Sanderson said, is athletic activity waiver.
Aaron Brooks, like Starocci, will shoot for four titles on Saturday after seal-clubbing Rocky Elam of Missouri, 17-2 in 5:45. He'll face Trent Hidlay of N.C. State and Mifflin County HS.
Mitchell Mesenbrink has just committed to
@pennstateWREST
He'll be a transfer from Cal Baptist, a two-time Wisconsin state champion and he'll compete at 157 pounds.
And PSU's Braeden Davis is a bona fide big-time 125-pounder as a freshman after a hard-fought 5-1 win over A-A Michael DeAugustino as Lions lead 21-3 in Ann Arbor
Buffalo's Kyle Todrank, a junior from Evansville, Indiana, had some pluck but once he mocked Jason Nolf and ticked him off, it didn't end well.Nolf went right to an overhead cradle from an outside single for the fall in 5:41. Mark Hall carried Nolf on his shoulders to locker room
In the 'hardly a shocker but well-deserved' category, Aaron Brooks of
@pennstateWREST
has been named this year's Hodge Trophy winner, signifying the nation's best collegiate wrestler. Brooks became a four-time NCAA champion for the Nittany Lions this year.
One of the nicest young men you'd ever want to meet,
@pennstateWREST
Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 2, has matches with No. 3 coming on Friday and No. 1 coming next Friday. His preparation, he said, remains the same.
There's been a lot of illness in the
@pennstateWREST
wrestling room and Cael Sanderson says it's slowly making its way out. Starocci feeling better; Van Ness ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery. Details:
Freshman Levi Haines knocks off 2-time A-A Will Lewan 3-1 in sudden victory OT at 157. Not many shots in regulation but 78 seconds of overtime action packed, and Haines switches from single to double-leg and gain control for the 3-1 win. Sellout crowd erupted...standing ovation.
Big, big win for PSU freshman Tyler Kasak, downing third-seeded Jackson Arrington of N.C. State by way of Forest Hills in Johnstown. Kasak's second-period takedown tied it at 4 and he escaped in the third and held off Arrington for a 5-4 victory and an A-A placement.
Greg Kerkvliet extremely efficient on his feet and four takedowns give him impressive 13-4 win over Michigan's Lucas Davison and his first NCAA title at heavyweight. He hugged Cael and Casey and Cody and then ran to his parents at matside. Nice moment for the big guy.
Half of the United States World freestyle wrestling team will be manned by Nittany Lion Wrestling Club athletes and former
@pennstateWREST
wrestlers. Lee, Retherford, Taylor, Dake and Snyder win Final X titles at Newark Saturday night. A recap:
Mitchell Mesenbrink's Big Ten title was just the next thing, he said. And there's a lot more ahead for the
@pennstateWREST
at the NCAAs and beyond. A look at the Nittany Lion freshman:
The Penn State freshman does it. Braeden Davis beats yet another highly experienced wrestler, Patrick McKee of Minnesota, 8-1 in 125-pound B1G finals. Davis used a tilt off a mat return for 3 and countered 3 McKee throws before hitting a double-leg to seal it. Impressive stuff.
Well, who saw that coming. Penn State comes up with two upset wins in the first two bouts at 133 and 141 as Roman Bravo-Young upends Luke Pletcher in overtime and Nick Lee downs No. 2 Joey McKenna 7-6, the same score McKenna won by last year. Penn State leads 5-0. Crowd stunned.
It's tournament time and
@pennstateWREST
postseason begins on Saturday at the Big Ten Championships in Maryland. Nittany Lions are huge favorites not only to win the team title but, more importantly, qualify all 10 wrestlers for the NCAAs in Kansas City.
Max Dean, 57-12 his last 2 season on the mat at 184 at Cornell, has transferred to
@pennstateWREST
, according to brother Gabe Dean in an interview with Chael Sonnen on YouTube. Gabe said Max most likely will move to 197. One of the more intriguing moves from the transfer portal.
Beau Bartlett (65 kilograms), Alex Facundo (74kg) among 7 current, former or future
@pennstateWREST
to qualify for Olympic Wrestling Trials at U.S. Senior Nationals.
Aaron Nagao places third at 133 with a quick fall over Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska in 1:51, causing a second straight roar from the large and partisan Penn State crowd at Maryland.
There have been good bout, impressive performances through the B1Gs, but Aaron Brooks' 19-3 tech fall over Iowa's Zach Glazier was as good as it gets. Six textbook, perfectly executed takedowns to become a four-time B1G champ, just the 4th 4-timer in PSU history.
That's what you call power. PSU freshman Levi Haines lifts unbeaten Peyton Robb with single-leg in OT, Robb counters, but Haines keeps the leg, lifts again and powers Robb to mat for winning takedown and 3-1 SV decision. Haines pointed to crowd and let out a scream.
Here is Penn State’s wrestling lineup for Sunday, according to Cael Sanderson: Devon Schnupp, Roman Bravo-Young, Nick Lee, Jered Verkleeren, Jason Nolf, Vincenzo Joseph, Mark Hall, Shakur Rasheed, Bo Nickal and Anthony Cassar. Lions host Kent State at 2 p.m. Sunday.

@pennstateWREST
heavy favorite to win its third straight title this week in Kansas City.
PSU's Greg Kerkvliet places 4th at heavyweight after a 2-2 criteria loss to Dom Bradley. Fourth place still nets Kerkvliet a spot on the U.S. National team for future freestyle events.
Carter Starocci makes it official: He'll return to
@pennstateWREST
for the opportunity to compete for record-setting fifth NCAA wrestling championship.
Cael Sanderson pleased with overall performance of his 20
@pennstateWREST
Nittany Lions today. Said veterans looked good, newcomers scored a lot of points, and said Shayne Van Ness "looked really good." Also pointed out the performance of Beau Bartlett.
PSU's Tyler Kasak gets best of Iowa's Caleb Rathjen, 8-1, at 149, avenging overtime loss at Iowa earlier this year. Kasak to wrestle for third place later today.
PSU's Carter Starocci just reiterated his earlier statement to Flo about being 60-40 to return to the Penn State lineup next season. He did add that he wants to make the decision within the next couple of weeks and, if he returns, would attempt to pursue a master's program.
12 of 17
@pennstateWREST
place at Army Black Knight Invite as 5 win titles, 2 earn second and 5 others place on Sunday. Lions were missing 5 starters and entered wrestlers at just 7 weight classes.
Incoming PSU frosh Connor Mirasola just took out veteran wrestler David McFadden, formerly of Virginia Tech, 4-0. Showed good strength, good ability to counter. ... Beau Bartlett defeats former Cornell star Nahshon Garrett 10-6 at 65kg.
Carter Starocci's winning streak of 64 is over. He medically defaults to Minnesota's Andrew Sparks at 174. He'll do the same in the next consolation round and will rely on a certain at-large bid to qualify for the NCAAs. He will not earn the top seed at the nationals.
This one was never in doubt as Beau Bartlett turns in his most impressive performance of the season with a 7-2 win over No. 2 Real Woods. Two takedowns, one in the first period and one with :03 remaining, did the trick for Bartlett. Penn State leads 7-3.
A three-day domination for
@pennstateWREST
in Kansas City as Starocci and Brooks win 4th NCAA titles and Lions set team scoring record with 172.5 points and record for the winning margin of 100 points over Cornell.
Another team title for
@pennstateWREST
, the Lions' third straight and 11th in past 13 seasons. Six wrestlers will vie for titles on and Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks will shoot for their fourth title, a first for PSU and only 6th and 7th ever to win 4.
And Jason Nolf becomes
@pennstateWREST
third three-time NCAA wrestling champion after thumping Nebraska's Tyler Berger 10-2. Nolf scored eight of his 10 points in the opening period. He finishes the season 35-0 and his career at 117-3 with 60 falls.
And Aaron Brooks enables Penn State to have a perfect 4-for-4 night with an extremely tight 3-2 victory over Trent Hidlay of NC State and Mifflin County
The crowd, large and partisan Penn State, did not like Burroughs' defensive tactics and Nebraska coach Mark Manning was goading the crowd walking off the floor as well as chirping at Penn State coach Casey Cunningham. Hardy round of boos ensued.
If it wasn't a fall, it was a technical fall, as
@pennstateWREST
dispenses of Hofstra, 43-10, at Rec Hall. Cael Sanderson impressed with performance of Braeden Davis at 125 pounds. Details:

PSU's Mitchell Mesenbrink camps out on the legs of Iowa's Mikey Caliendo, taking him down at will with singles and doubles en route to a 23-7 tech fall at the 6:47 mark. Mesenbrink's final with Wisconsin's Dean Hamiti could be Sunday's highlight bout. Points likely to fly.
Aaron Brooks' impressive performance in Las Vegas earns the
@pennstateWREST
wrestler a U.S. Open title and Final X berth against Olympic champion David Taylor. Bartlett 4th; Starocci 6th; Nolf trims former teammate Joseph in finals. Details:
Quite the week for
@pennstateWREST
as Nittany Lions add U-20 silver medalist, Wisconsin state champ and Cal Baptist transfer Mitchell Mesenbrink to team on Friday. He'll compete at 157/165. They got Bernie Truax on Thursday. Here is what Mesenbrink said:
You want to talk special freshman...Levi Haines. Trailing 7-2 to Va. Tech All-America Bryce Andonian, and close to being pinned, Haines battled back with two takedowns and worked a half-nelson to turn a tired Andonian for a fall in 6:11. Incredible turnaround for Haines at 157.
Near-perfect effort gives
@pennstateWREST
second straight Big Ten title. Lions have 5 champs and 9 wrestlers among top 3 while outdistancing Michigan by 47 points.
Wrestling season under way for
@pennstateWREST
and top-ranked Nittany Lions enjoy a productive day at Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Lions go 45-15 overall with 20 wrestlers and projected starters win 27 of 29 bouts. Here is a recap:
Extremely impressive victory for freshman Tyler Kasak at 149 over IU's Graham Rooks. Kasak led 11-0 after one period, 14-0 after two and escaped late for a 16-0 tech fall. Rooks, if you recall, led PSU's Shayne Van Ness in last year's NCAA's before Van Ness staged a comeback.
It's all but done as
@pennstateWREST
needs just 9.5 points to clinch its 10th team title under Cael Sanderson. Lions will have wrestlers in Saturday night's finals, including freshman Levi Haines at 157.
Typical domination for Aaron Brooks as he took down All-America Silas Allred five times and scored a 17-4 major decision to give Penn State an 18-13 lead with only 285 to go.

Dual-meet season finally arrives for
@pennstateWREST
as Nittany Lions host Lehigh at 2 p.m. Sunday. Cael Sanderson discusses the 125-pound weight class and recaps the recent All-Star Classic. Details here:
After wins by Haines and Mesenbrink, Carter Starocci takes out his second NCAA champ of the day, beating Michigan's Shane Griffith 2-0 with a second-period rideout and third-period escape.
Reigning Olympic champion David Taylor has been defeated in back-to-back matches by Penn State's Aaron Brooks. The two embraced at center mat but Brooks' defense kept Taylor at bay. Incredible scene.
PSU's Aaron Brooks continues his impressive run through the 197-pound field in search of his fourth NCAA title. The now 5-time All-American (COVID year counted as an A-A finish) pinned Oklahoma's Stephen Buchanan in 2:44. Brooks is incredibly smooth and talented.
