I remember in elementary school, when we’d get to check out books from the library, there was a long stretch where the only book I checked out week after week was a non-fiction book on Clydesdale horses. I would painstakingly try and draw each picture - not much has changed!

Well I panicked a bit with the background, but I think I am getting closer to the soft and ripply mane. I learned that you can somewhat erase prismacolors when you’ve overdone it, and that is a very good thing to know when you are not psychologically capable of planning ahead.

As a kid I watched all the Rankin Bass Smaug scenes with equal parts fear and fascination. What an absolutely rad creature design. Beam eyes, pebbly scales, fur all over and the face of a wolf/wildcat/goblin who has Seen Things (probably things he caused himself, but whatever)

Process for the clydesdale and kitties – I did a little pre-planning on this one, since I wanted to get that “sun-flooded barn” atmosphere just right – lots of reds and yellows and golds, and not many cool colors. Stuck with my trusty tuscan red and indigo blue for the darks.

Process for the appaloosa pegasus – I used some different colors this time to shake things up – light turquoise for the white shadows and black raspberry/tuscan red for the darks and blacks. Worked great for the pegasus, but the grass and flowers gave me so much trouble!
