If your way of defending Israel's policy is to split hairs over the defenition of blockade, while children are dying of starvation because Israel is not allowing enough aid into Gaza, well, you're doing it wrong.
55 years of occupation, annexation of Jerusalem and 600.000 or so settlers.
Israel is worried that the ICJ will conclude that this doesn't look temporary.
This was a depressing podcast to record. As somebody following this closely I was shocked when both

What's the best rejection argument you have received from a peer-reviewer?
And by best I mean worst.
Mine is: "This was an interesting article about president Carter, but I would have preferred reading about Nixon"
I am going to make a bold prediction - going out on a limb here - but I don't think
#Biden
will lie about the size of his

Setting the bar so high. The highest bar.
Norway's vote in the UNGA for a ceasefire should have been the most natural thing in the world, but looking at how the other Nordic countries voted I have to be proud of my government.
There are structures & there are events. The Gaza escalation is an event. The occupation is a structure. True to form the international community will end this event and pat its diplomats on the back for a job well done then allow the structures to keeo grinding people under foot
The international community informs Israel that expanding settlements is illegal and obstructive to the 2state solution.
Israel shrugs, and builds.
The international community shakes its head in disapointment, and moves on.
The big 3 of human rights orgs working on Israel/Palestine have now all concluded that Israel is an apartheid state.

Anybody who has ever worked with Nils Petter on anything will recognize this a an achievment worthy of a celebration!
I am continuosly baffeled by framing 'settlement freeze' as Israeli concession. Settlements are illegal according to international law, so bar should be set at dismantlement. Having 'settlement freeze' as a concession illsustrates extent of Israel's power of defining conflict.
There are structures & there are events. The Gaza escalation is an event. The occupation is a structure. True to form the international community will end this event and pat its diplomats on the back for a job well done then allow the structures to keep grinding people under foot

Unless serious steps are taken I fear that Israel's war on Gaza has set a tragic new standard regarding targeting of health workers and facilities, journalists, and UN workers and facilities in war.
Jimmy Carter was the first US president to understand that the Palestinians had legitimate national ambitions and that this had to be addressed. Unfortunately he failed in that ambition.

Norway will now finally start labelling goods produced in occupied territories as originating in the ocuupied territories, and no longer as produced in Israel.
UN mediator Ralph Bunche aptly summed up all Arab-Israeli negotiations when he in 1949 wrote in his diary "Another deal and as usual the Palestine Arabs lose".
Several months ago I had an article rejected after R&R on the grounds that "the argument is somewhat shallow".
I know editors are overburdended, but that kind of wording hurts.
Today I finally managed to submit an edited version of that article to another journal.
40 years ago the Egyptian-Israeli conflict was solved after intense US diplomacy. The Palestinians were left hanging.

I cannot believe 3years have passed since I held my first book in my hands for the first time. If it wasn't for the long 2020 it would have seemed like such a short time ago.
As a researcher your job is not to do everything the peer-reviewers say, but it is to show that you have taken their reviews seriously. Here are some tips - especially to early career researchers - on how you can do that.
@PRIOUpdates
One of my articles is coming out in a journal requiring that all the people thanked in the thank you note have been made aware and approve that they be thanked.
I am dying to know the story behind that policy!
According to the author
@e_l_sogge
I gave him "moral support" while he wrote this book. It was the least I could do. This book comes strongly recommended!

Kurds and Palestinians would seem very natural national groups to compare given their struggles for national independence in a region denying them such rights, yet very few works have done so.

on your appointment as Prime Minister of Israel. Norway remains committed to support peace, stability and security in the region and the two-state solution.
Pro-tip to reviewers: Even when you hate an article or book you should still be civil in your recommended rejection. It increases the likelihood that the author will accept your critique.

@dagsrevyen
Even at the best of times defunding UNRWA would have tragic consequences for millions of people. Defunding it now, under the present condictions, is tantamount to murder. UNRWA is the main lifeline for much of Gaza's population.

More than 90% of the Gazan population have been displaced.
This is a staggering and unprecedented level of destruction and forced displacement, taking place in front of our eyes.
All researchers struggle with how to adress reviewer requirements.
When you get a R&R you don't have to adapt to all their demands.
Perhaps the most important thing you must do is to argue for your choices in the response letter.

It is time to remember what Olof Palme allegedly said at the end of the 1972 UN environmental conference: We stand at the edge of a cliff, but we have taken a great step forward.

The Israeli vaccine rollout is highly impressive, but since Israel is also an occupier there is a huge population not counted in percentage of "population". Journalists should use the Israeli numbers for amount of people vaccinated, but not uncritically repeat the percentage.
Today I am physically giving a university lecture for the first time since the 2019 fall semester! I am so looking forward to it! The topic, The great powers in the Middle East in the aftermath of 1948 and prelude to Suez.
If you are starving a population and a stampede breaks out when aid finally arrives, whether or not you shot at those attempting to get the aid, the blame is on you for starving that population.
